Humility: A Direct Path to Gods Heart
Is there a wrong way to pray? Apparently, yes, if todaysGospel is any indication. One clear lesson is that we should
not come to prayer with a chip on our shoulder! Lets face it:
Theres you with your many gifts and talents, good looks, accomplishments and, uh, your failures, sins, mistakes,
and regrets! Then theres God who is All Holy, All Wise, All
Faithful, All Knowing, All Powerful, Rich in mercy, generouswith His graces, Creator of the Universe and overall Doer of
the Impossible. Clearly this is not a relationship amongequals by any stretch of the imagination. So, how do you get
started praying to God the right way, and doing it every day?
First, check your attitude. Acknowledge that God owes youabsolutely nothing and you owe him absolutely everything!
He is the source of every blessing and grace in your life and
anything short of extraordinary thankfulness and daily praiseis both unjust and ungrateful. With the right attitude, now you
are ready to actually pray.
Heres a simple way you can structure a personal prayer time.
It can be summed up in the acronym, A.C.T.S. It stands forAdoration, Contrition, Thanksgiving, and Supplication.
First, there is Adoration. You will never come to Mass and
hear as an opening song: Nobody Knows the Trouble Ive
Seen! There is a time for sharing your troubles but its best to
start with acknowledging the God who can deliver you from
them through praise and adoration. This naturally leads to
Contrition because focusing on Gods goodness and holiness
will inevitable make you acutely aware of how different you
are from him! Have mercy on me, a sinner the tax
collector said with a humble and contrite heart. We say, I
confess to Almighty God and Lord have mercy right after
singing the opening song of praise. Thanksgiving for thismercy and the many other blessings we have received puts
what we lack in proper perspective. Finally, Supplication in
the form of Petitions (asking for your own needs) andIntercessions (pleading for the needs of others) should also be
a part of any daily prayer regimen. Praying with a humble
spirit is the quickest way to the heart of our amazing andhumble God!
