We are proud to introduce ourselves as the “Bethlehem Christian Families”, from the Holy Land. We have come to the United States representing the Christian wood carvers of Bethlehem

that rely on the tourism to support their families. Due to the bad situation and the interruption of the tourist trade, 500 families of the Holy Land are in danger of having to leave their homes in search of work. Our mission is to bring and sell the Olive Wood Carvings to Catholic Churches in the United States, to help the Christian families remain in their homes and support their families. These Christians who make their livelihood through the selling of their hand carved Olive Wood religious items are depending on us to bring these beautiful carvings, such as, Nativity Scenes, Crucifixes, Pictures of the Last Supper, and several other religious items to you. Please look over these carvings that are available to you on the weekend of September 23rd & 24th, 2017, and help support this self-help project that enables us to keep the Christians in the Holy Land. Your help and understanding in this crucial matter is greatly appreciated. Visit the website at www.holylandcarvings.com, or call Amy Abufarha at (810) 625-8536.

Reading I: Jeremiah 20:7-9: Jeremiah lived in Judah during the time that the Neo-Babylonian Empire began to

constitute a threat to the Israelites (from 605 BC on) until, eventually, Jerusalem fell to the forces of

Nebuchadnezzar (587 BC), and the deportation to Babylon took place. Our first reading this weekend comes

from the part of Jeremiah known as one of his confessions. The passages are called confessions, because they

express the prophets’ deepest feelings. The verses we have this weekend come from the last confession, and

it could have been uttered around 605-604 BC, when Jeremiah was being persecuted by King Jehoiakim.

Despite all his efforts, Jeremiah feels that he has failed. He believes in God, but he has begun to question

whether or not he received a special call from God. It is a time of inner crisis for Jeremiah. He feels like such a

failure, that he thinks perhaps God has misled him. By proclaiming the word of God, he has made many

enemies. No one really listens to him; reproach and derision are the only responses he gets from the people.

He would like to walk away. Yet he cannot, for God is like a burning fire in his heart (verse 9), and he cannot

really hold it in.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9 (2b): Our responsorial psalm for this weekend is a Psalm of

David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. The prayer begins by expressing the psalmist’s fervent desire

to be with God. He recalls the times he spent in His presence in the temple (verses 2-5), and tells God how he

keeps his presence in mind during the night. His desire for God is intensified by his previous experience of

meeting Him in the temple, and the psalmist realizes that there is nothing to compare with being in the

presence of God, not even life itself (verses 2-3). In times of darkness and difficulty, he draws joy and strength

from his relationship with God.

Reading II: Romans 12:1-2: In this passage from Romans, St. Paul is addressing both Jewish and Gentile

Christians exhorting them to embrace their new life in Christ, the foundation of the pattern of life to be

embraced by all believers. Christian ethics are not grounded in law but in the mercies of God (verse 1) and are

a response of gratitude to the grace of God. In other words, the believers way of life is a response to God’s

mercy. Christian existence must not be conformed to the ways of this world but transformed by the renewal

of one’s mind. A renewed mind is essential to the discernment of God’s will and the transformation of life. St.

Paul is teaching that believers’ entire way of life is sacrificial, in that their whole existence is offered to God.

Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27: In last week’s Gospel, we saw Jesus commissioning Peter to guide the Church in

the future as the Vicar of Christ. This week, we find Jesus telling His disciples for the first time, that God’s

purpose involves His (Jesus’) death and resurrection. This passage is the first of four predictions of the Passion.

Jesus says, He must go and suffer greatly. Must denotes the suffering that inevitably come to God’s agents,

who confront the status quo. The empire’s leaders, including the religious allies, strike back by killing its

opponents. But Jesus’ resurrection exposes the limits of their power. Peter is appalled by what he hears Jesus

saying and lets Him know that. Jesus interprets Peter’s alarm as expressing Satan’s opposition to God’s will.

Jesus’ death has implications for discipleship. They, too, must walk the way of the Cross. To deny oneself, is to

turn from whatever hinders faithful and lived commitment. Disciples identify with Jesus and all who challenge

the empire. They must not be intimidated into compliance and accommodation. Saving one’s life means not

confronting the injustice of the present but settling for safe self-interest. Continued on next page...

Continued from the previous page.

To lose one’s life, is to embrace the alternative practices of community that embody God’s empire. Thus,

decisions about present discipleship have eschatological (end times and eternal life) implications.

Reflection: With the Gospel reading this weekend, we have reached a definitive moment in Jesus’ career.

From this time, He intensely prepares His disciples for His passion, death, and resurrection. The Church as

decreed that above each of her altars, there should be a crucifix. When we enter a Catholic

Church, therefore, the crucifix will be the focus of our field of vision. Not an empty cross,

clean and elegant, but a cross being used to crucify the one man who never sinned, the one

man who didn’t deserve to die. Why such an emphasis on such a cruel reality? Why not put

scenes of Christ’s birth above every altar or His resurrection or ascension? The Lord told us

why. “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow

me.” The prophet Jeremiah denied himself and suffered for God. Sts. Peter and Paul took up

their crosses (St. Peter did literally) and followed Jesus. One way that each of us can follow Jesus is, as St. Paul

said in the second reading, by not being conformed to the ways of this world but by being transformed by the

renewal of our minds, as we live a new life in Christ. St. Paul believed and taught that a follower of Christ can

have a way of life, in which his/her entire way of life is sacrificial, in that their whole existence is offered to

God. But, we are just ordinary people. How are we to do this? Perhaps, we can do this via prayer, offering

our day to God. There are many ways to do this, but one such method is offered by the ministry of the

Apostleship of Prayer and is called the Morning Offering. The prayer is along the lines of :

“Oh Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works,

sufferings, and joys of this day in unity with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, for all

the intensions of your Sacred Heart: salvation of souls, reparation and the reunion

of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and all apostles of

prayer and, in particular, those intentions mentioned by our Holy Father this month.”

In this prayer, we have offered God our whole day, and we are praying with the whole Church. Imagine the

transforming power of such prayer!
