God of Us All

You are the God of all of humankind and all of creation, forgive us for our wrongs against our brothers and sisters

as well as against your creation. We ask for your grace to change our hearts

from intolerance and selfishness to love and sharing so that each of us will have enough, and none have an excess.

May we all have respect for every other creature. In your name we pray

and give thanks for all you have given us. Amen

Covid Plan for St Anthony’s Parish: The St Anthony’s Covid plan - put together in consultation with the Parish Pastoral Council - has been approved by Bishop Robert. A copy is on the Church Notice Board. All the requirements for gathering in the church have been put in place.

We have a duty of care to positively support the health of the wider faith community, so there continues to be issues around restricting numbers in the church, social distancing and appropriate cleaning of the church each time it is used.

The Australian bishops have reminded us that all Catholics are released from their Sunday obligation in these times.

Weekday mass is now held on Wednesday and Fridays at 9.15am. The Friday mass will continue to be live streamed. There is no need to book for these masses.

As part of our COVIDSafe Plan we will still need to keep a record of attendees for contact tracing (to be kept for 56 days). To streamline entry to mass we issue Mass Cards with a number printed on it. The Parish office will keep a record of the card number so upon arrival you need only write down your card number. No unwell person can attend and those who are older and/or vulnerable are asked to consider their attendance. If you would like time for private prayer in the church please contact the parish and make an appointment.

Sunday mass will begin again at 8.30am 2nd August. We ask that you email or phone the office on 4636 1737 to make a booking. We recommend those able to attend weekday mass continue to do so and keep Sunday mass for workers and families.

At this time no date has been set for a return to the 6pm Vigil mass.

COVID19 Plan – Ways you can help when attending Mass. Make a booking to attend mass. (Sunday only) Stay home if you or a member of your family is unwell. Avoid gathering in groups inside the church before and after mass. Avoid close contact with anyone who has cold or flu-like symptoms Enter via the Entry door only. Exit via the Exit door only. Maintain 1-5m social distancing at all times. Follow all instructions by the Welcomers and Ushers. Apply hand sanitiser on arrival. Ensure you get and use a Mass Card with personal details for

streamlined entry. If unable to walk to communion, use front row seats. Sit only in your allocated seat/s. Avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily. Practice good hygiene – eg sneeze, cough into elbow or tissue (not

hands) Say “Peace be with you” and offer a smile, wave, nod or bow for the

Sign of Peace. Following instructions on receiving communion. To maintain Social Distancing ALL people, unless seated in front rows, MUST come forward for communion or a

blessing. Advise the Parish Office immediately if you suspect you have or have been diagnosed with COVID19 in the days

after attending a mass. Consider downloading the COVIDSafe App.

*** Social Justice News ***

Social Justice Thought for the Week:

Today’s parable witnesses to God’s faithful presence in our world, despite the troubles and traumas that threaten us. God’s plans cannot ultimately be thwarted by the presence of evil (“weeds”), yet abundant life for all (“wheat”) is threatened by systemic evils such as racism, sexism, and prejudices of all kinds. Decency, compassion, kindness and openness to others are often choked by meanness, greed and selfishness. Though things will ultimately be sorted out, we should not be surprised at the effectiveness of little actions for justice. We do not have be inactive in the face of negativity. Attempts to abolish slavery failed repeatedly but the ideas behind them spread until they were passed into law. So we see that repeated small, incremental actions do matter, even when the results are not immediate or obvious. The true impact of activism may not be felt for generations. That alone is

reason to struggle, rather than surrender to frustration or despair. Life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?' (Martin Luther King Jr)

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First reading – Wisdom 12:13, 16-19

You will grant repentance after sin There is no God, other than you, who cares for everything, to whom you might have to prove that you never judged unjustly. Your justice has its source in strength, your sovereignty over all makes you lenient to all. You show your strength when people doubt the completeness of your power, and you expose the insolence of those who know it; but, disposing of such strength, you are mild in judgement, you govern us with great lenience, for you have only to will, and your power is there. By acting thus you have taught a lesson to your people how the virtuous man must be kindly to others, and you have given your people the good hope that after sin you will grant repentance. The word of God.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 85

R: Lord, you are good and forgiving. Lord, you are good and forgiving full of love to all who call. Give heed, O God, to my prayer and attend to the sound of my voice. R. All the nations shall come to adore you and glorify your name, O God: for you are great and do marvelous deeds, you who alone are God. R. But you, God of mercy and compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love and truth, turn and take pity on me. R.

Second reading – Romans 8:26-27

The Spirit himself expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words

The Spirit comes to help us in our weakness. For when we cannot choose words in order to pray properly, the Spirit expresses our plea in a way that could never be put into words, and God who knows everything in our hearts knows perfectly well what is meant, and that the pleas of the saints expressed by the Spirit are according to the mind of God. The word of God.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom.

Alleluia!

Gospel – Matthew 13:24-43

Let them both grow till the harvest Jesus put a parable before the crowds: ‘The reign of God may be compared to a sower who sowed good seed in a field. While everybody was asleep an enemy came, sowed darnel all among the wheat, and made off. When the new wheat sprouted and ripened, the darnel appeared as well. The owner’s servants came and said, “Was it not good seed that you sowed in your field? If so, where does the darnel come from?” “Some enemy has done this” he answered. And the servants said, “Do you want us to go and weed it out?” “No, because when you weed out the darnel you might pull up the wheat with it. Let them both grow till the harvest; and at harvest time I shall say to the reapers: First collect the darnel and tie it in bundles to be burnt, then gather the wheat into my barn.”’

Page 6: ST ANTHONY'S PARISHIf you would like time for private prayer in the church please contact the parish and make an appointment. Sunday mass will begin again at 8.30am 2nd August. We

Jesus put another parable before them: ‘The reign of God is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and shelter in its branches.’ Jesus told them another parable: ‘The reign of God is like the yeast a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour till it was leavened all through.’ In all this Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables; indeed, he would never speak to them except in parables. This was to fulfil the prophecy:

I will speak to you in parables and expound things hidden since the foundation of the world. Then, leaving the crowds, Jesus went to the house; and the disciples came to him and said, ‘Explain the parable about the darnel in the field to us.’ Jesus said in reply, ‘The sower of the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world; the good seed is the subjects of the kingdom; the darnel, the subjects of the evil one; the enemy who sowed them, the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; the reapers are the angels. Well then, just as the darnel is gathered up and burnt in the fire, so it will be at the end of time. The Son of Man will send angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all things that provoke offences and all who do evil, and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Then the virtuous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Listen, anyone who has ears!’

A Reflection By Pope Francis

Today’s Gospel reading offers three parables through which Jesus speaks to the crowds about the Kingdom of God. I will focus on the first: that of the good wheat and the weeds, which illustrates the problem of evil in the world and highlights God’s patience. How much patience God has! Each one of us too can say this: “How much patience God has!”. The narrative takes place in a field with two antagonists. On one side is the master of the field, who represents God and who sows good seed; on the other is the enemy, who represents Satan and scatters weeds.

As time passes, the weeds grow among the wheat, and the master and his servants express different opinions regarding this fact. The servants would like to intervene and uproot the weeds; but the master, who is concerned above all with saving the wheat, is against this, saying: “No; lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them”. With this image, Jesus tells us that in this world good and evil are so intertwined that it is impossible to separate them and eradicate all evil. God alone can do this, and he will do so at the Last Judgment. With its ambiguities and its composite character, the present situation is the field of freedom, the field of Christian freedom, in which the difficult exercise of discernment is made between good and evil.

This field then, involves reconciling, with great trust in God and in his providence, two seemingly contradictory approaches: decision and patience. Decision is that of wanting to be good wheat — we all want this — with all our might, and thus keeping away from the evil one and his seduction. Patience means preferring a Church that acts as leaven in the dough, that is unafraid to sully her hands washing her children’s clothes, rather than a Church of “purists” who presume to judge ahead of time who will be in the Kingdom of God and who will not.

Today the Lord, who is Wisdom incarnate, helps us to understand that good and evil cannot be identified with neatly defined areas or specific human groups: “These are the good, those are the bad”. He tells us that the boundary line between good and evil passes through the heart of each person; it passes through the heart of each of us, that is: We are all sinners. I would like to ask you: “Whoever is not a sinner raise your hand”. No one! Because we are all sinners, all of us are. Jesus Christ, with his death on the Cross and his Resurrection, has freed us from the slavery of sin and given us the grace to journey in a new life; but along with Baptism he also gave us Confession, because we all need to be forgiven for our sins. Looking always and only at the evil that is outside of us means not wanting to recognize the sin that is also inside us.

Then Jesus teaches us a different way of looking at the field of the world, of observing reality. We are called to learn God’s time — which is not our time — and also God’s “gaze”: thanks to the beneficial influence of uneasy

Page 7: ST ANTHONY'S PARISHIf you would like time for private prayer in the church please contact the parish and make an appointment. Sunday mass will begin again at 8.30am 2nd August. We

anticipation, what were weeds or seemed to be weeds can become a good product. It is the reality of conversion. It is the prospect of hope!

May the Virgin Mary help us to accept, in the reality that surrounds us, not only filth and evil, but also good and beauty; to unmask the work of Satan, but above all to trust in the action of God who fertilizes history

The Universal Prayer Sunday July 19th

– 16th

Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrant: Dear friends, Jesus revealed the mystery of God’s rule in stories of daily work and life. Let us bring our world before God and pray for God’s blessing upon us.

We pray for Pope Francis, that by the power of the Spirit he will keep calling the church to be renewed and reformed.

(Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray that the Church will always pray in the Holy Spirit, so that every member will open their hearts to God, who knows our deepest longings. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer. We pray that in a world full of the weeds of greed, lies and corruption, we will find in the word of Jesus the grace to be generous, truthful and to act with integrity. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for the overseers of church child-safeguarding policies, that their diligence and the vigilance of all in our church communities will ensure children can be safe and flourish in church schools and parishes. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer. We pray that in those places around the world where the COVID-19 pandemic is present among the poorest, governments will help each other to come to their aid in a spirit of human solidarity. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer. We pray for Ava Grace who was baptised on Saturday and for her family. May she and her family grow in the love of their God and of each other in the family of the church. (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer We pray that the children in our Sacramental program and their families will grow in the love of God and realise deeply that their God is close to them in the difficulties and troubles of life as well as in the joys and achievements (Pause for silent prayer) Lord, hear our prayer.

May Christ bring to everlasting life those who have died, especially from the Corona virus and bring consolation to

their families. We remember all those we know who have died recently: Max Collins, Narelle Talbot, Elaine

Watson. Our loved ones whose anniversaries are at this time: Fritz Schick, Michael Waters. The deceased priests

of the Diocese ……. All those who are sick. Lord hear our prayer.

Celebrant: God of love, show us your mercy and compassion , so that we reach out to others in loving service. Through Christ our Lord.

(St Alphonsus)

Dear everyone, Just when we thought the opening up of life would continue, the increase in Covid cases in Victoria has reminded us

that this virus and the restrictions placed upon us to keep us safe will be with us for an extended time into the future.

We at the parish office have a duty of care for everyone who comes to pray in our St Anthony’s church and all who

gather in the parish Centre, and each member of the parish has a duty of care for one another. Let us not be

complacent but be attentive to all the ways of behaving that will help to keep us - and the wider community -

safe.

We are proceeding cautiously with the opening up of our parish for liturgy and meetings, taking care to inform and

encourage those who attend to continue with Covid safe behaviours. This can be difficult especially when greeting

friends who we have not seen for many weeks. It is very difficult to show our love and friendship by keeping apart, but

that is what we are called to do. With more gatherings we have also increased the hours for our cleaners to comply

with the cleaning we have been asked to do between and before each gathering.

As well as weekday mass - now on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9.15am - we

are having Baptisms on most of the Saturdays in coming weeks. Some

families have waited many months for their special day, and we are all

delighted to welcome these new Christians into our faith community. From

August 2nd we will begin Sunday morning mass at 8.30am. As we are

restricted to a maximum of 60 people in our church space those who wish to

attend will need to phone or email the office to make a booking. We ask

those who can attend weekday mass to leave the Sunday mass for those

who work during the week and for their families. As thorough cleaning and

sanitising of the church is required after each gathering, at this stage we are

not resuming our usual 6pm Saturday night mass. We do not wish to turn

anyone away so depending on numbers we may need to have a roster for

attending mass on every second Sunday.

When we watch the news each day and follow the Covid crisis as it unfolds,

we see great distress and hardship especially to the poorest and most vulnerable in our world. The reality of all this can

be overwhelming. This weekend’s readings remind us of what we already know from reflection on our own life’s

experiences – that wheat and chaff, joys and sorrows, grow up together in the field of our days. When our whole focus

is on ridding ourselves of the weeds of life, we can become self-focused and negative and unable to fully appreciate

the wheat – the blessings that surround us. Our faith reminds us that God “who sends rain on the just and unjust alike”

holds all things in being and there will be an end to the story of the present time. Julian of Norwich was an English

mystic of the 14th century. She wrote the earliest surviving book in English written by a woman called ‘Revelations of

Divine Love’. In the midst of the turmoil of the life of her times, she heard the voice to God reassuring her. “All shall be

well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.”

We pray that we too trust in the God who rains down blessings on the earth and will bring all things to completion.

Fr Peter, Noela, and myself hold you in our prayer. May we continue to pray for each other especially those most in need. (Sr) Maria
