T here are two ways to live life: One way is by responding; the other is by deciding. Living by responding takes on a passive atude towards life. You only react to lifes events. However, in living your life by deciding, you exert control over the future and who youd like to become. The Viennese psychiatrist Victor Frankl spent three years in a Nazi concentraon camp. In his memoirs, Mans Search For Meaning,he asserts that he survived because he retained the freedom to choose. Remarkably in a Nazi concentraon camp, freedom to choose does not exist! Zilch! You cannot even choose when you might live or die. Yet Viktor Frankl decided to retain the freedom to determine his atude in any circumstance - the freedom to choose his own way. Example of life in the camp: Food shortage - stronger prisoners steal from the weaker ones. Much as he wanted to, Frankl had the strength to pry bread out of the hands of children, the elderly and the sick, but he chose not to do so. But those who chose to steal food from the weak did not live much longer than the others either. They knew that they had lost their humanity, becoming animals in feeding off each other. Frankl chose to starve rather than feed off the weakness of others. He decided to die rather than lose his humanity. He insists that his choice is what gave him the will to survive. He retained his freedom to choose. It is clear that todays readings call us to live life not by responding but by choosing and deciding. Joshua says in the First Reading, As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.Even though many of the other disciples abandon Jesus because of His teaching, Peter speaks for the twelve and says, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”. We have the freedom to choose, the freedom to believe that God is real and present. We can choose to remain open to that presence. In every circumstance, we have the freedom to live with love, with jusce, with integrity. So, decide today to live in mercy and jusce. Decide today to live in love and integrity. Decide today to believe that God is acve in this moment and that God is leading you to joy. Fr. T here are two ways to live life: One way is by responding; the other is by

deciding. Living by responding takes on a passive attitude towards life.

You only react to life’s events. However, in living your life by deciding,

you exert control over the future and who you’d like to become.

The Viennese psychiatrist Victor Frankl spent three years in a Nazi concentration

camp. In his memoirs, “Man’s Search For Meaning,” he asserts that he survived

because he retained the freedom to choose. Remarkably in a Nazi concentration camp,

freedom to choose does not exist! Zilch! You cannot even choose when you might live

or die. Yet Viktor Frankl decided to retain the freedom to determine his attitude in any

circumstance - the freedom to choose his own way.

Example of life in the camp: Food shortage - stronger prisoners steal from the

weaker ones. Much as he wanted to, Frankl had the strength to pry bread out of the

hands of children, the elderly and the sick, but he chose not to do so. But those who

chose to steal food from the weak did not live much longer than the others either.

They knew that they had lost their humanity, becoming animals in feeding off each

other. Frankl chose to starve rather than feed off the weakness of others. He decided

to die rather than lose his humanity. He insists that his choice is what gave him the will

to survive. He retained his freedom to choose.

It is clear that today’s readings call us to live life not by responding but by

choosing and deciding. Joshua says in the First Reading, “As for me and my household,

we will serve the Lord.” Even though many of the other disciples abandon Jesus

because of His teaching, Peter speaks for the twelve and says, “Lord, to whom shall we

go? You have the words of eternal life”.

We have the freedom to choose, the freedom to believe that God is real and

present. We can choose to remain open to that presence. In every circumstance, we

have the freedom to live with love, with justice, with integrity. So, decide today to live

in mercy and justice. Decide today to live in love and integrity.

Decide today to believe that God is active in this moment and that God is leading

you to joy.

Stewardship Reflection

“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve… As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a disciple in the work of the

Lord. A disciple is a person who spends time in prayer every day, joyfully participates in charitable

works and generously supports their local parish and Church mission. If we say we serve God, we

must actually do something and not merely talk about it!.

St. Monica's Mission Holy Hour

Many parents are grieving the loss of their adult child’s faith in the Catholic Church. This Year of the Family is an ideal time of

grace for parents to pray, fast, and sacrifice for their adult children’s conversion. Through St. Monica's Mission, A Prayerful

Journey of Perseverance and Hope, parents are invited to join our monthly Holy Hours on the Third Friday of the month at

various parishes across the Archdiocese. The first Holy Hour will take place Friday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi

Parish. Learn more and register here.

Gregorian Chant Workshop with Christopher Suen

This workshop is led by Christopher Suen, Choirmaster and Director of Music at Holy Family Parish. Chris will begin by speaking

briefly about the history, use, and theory of chant, then dive into a practical session that will involve singing some chants. It is

open to all levels of singing and will be a chance for people to deepen their understanding of the beautiful texts and the way

they are sung during the mass, ultimately drawing them closer to worshipping God in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Sunday, August 29 at 3:00 p.m. Learn more and register at beholdvancouver.org/events.
