“Leadership is not about titles, positions or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” John Maxwell

At SACSS student leadership training, we believe in marrying the pioneering spirit ofSG50 with the skills of the 21st century, to prepare our student leaders to be leadersfor the future. Imbued with the CORRI values, our students aspire to be servantleaders who will give back to the society and serve the community with humility andintegrity. We try to impress upon them that student leadership is about lifelongpersonal development (growth mindset) and character building. Giving back beginswith the seniors mentoring the junior student leaders in their leadership journey.

Challenging the Mind - Critical thinking and problem solving, for example, have beenthe building blocks of human progress throughout history. What's ‘new’ is the extentto which schools must be more deliberate in the explicit teaching of critical thinking, emphasizing the need for inquiry mindset, collaboration, communication andproblem solving.

Inspiring the Hearts -To inspire our students to aim for a higher and nobler level ofleadership, they need to know what they stand for, and as student leaders how theiractions can impact their community. There must be trust, respect and room to allowthem to learn from experience, reflect and grow from mistakes as part of theirjourney toward success.

Enabling the Way - To develop a growth mindset as student leaders, the schoolprovides hands-on opportunities for them to plan and run events, teaching studentsto relish challenges, to enjoy effort, to be resilient, and to value their ownimprovement – as individuals and as a team. As teacher mentors, we evaluate thelearning process rather than the students' ability, seek improvement in the students’tackling of challenging learning tasks, and highlight their progress and effort. Studentleaders nurtured in such circumstances will have the values and tools to embracelifelong learning and personal development.

Looking Ahead - John Maxwell, a famous leadership expert, aptly said, ‘The ability toconnect with others begins with understanding the value of people.’ It is not justabout completing a task, it is about working and moving forward together as a team. There are many ways to achieve common goals; the question is how we arrive as ateam. It is the people you work with that help sustain the passion and desire toachieve more for the community. Lastly, having a good heart is just as important ashaving a good head. We must develop our students to be entrepreneurial thinkerswith big hearts so that we can safely entrust our future in their capable and kindhands.
