SUNDAY THOUGHT Matthew 25:31-46
For our Gospel on this Last Sunday of the Liturgical
Year, The Feast of Christ the King, we hear the parable
of the separation of the sheep from the goats. What
shouldn’t be lost on us as we listen to this parable is
that both groups were surprised at how their own
actions were judged. Both the righteous who are
symbolized by the sheep and the unrighteous
represented by the goats, failed to recognize Jesus in the
situation described in the parable. It seems that the only
difference between the two groups was their
willingness to act or not to act on what they saw before
them. Those who were blessed saw many suffering
individuals throughout their lives and they simply tried
to meet their needs as best as they could. It is only later
on do they discover that acting in that manner served
Jesus. The damned on the other hand couldn’t be
bothered. They could have helped but they didn’t for
some reason. Jesus is asking us again today to meet the
needs of strangers and prisoners, the hungry and the
homeless without judging whether they are “worthy” of
the help we give them and without caring whether they
are going to appreciate what we do for them or not.
That is for God to judge. Our job is to respond.

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS Saint Mechtilde of Helfta, Religious (1241-1298)
Mechtilde was the third daughter of the powerful Baron von Hackeborn of Thruringia which today is modern day Germany. When she was six, her mother took her to visit Rodarsdorf Abbey, where her eldest sister was a nun. Mechtilde begged to remain and she was permitted to enter the abbey school. Highly gifted in both mind and soul, she made remarkable progress in learning and in virtue. In time, Mechtilde took vows in the abbey as a Benedictine nun. After the abbey moved to Helfta, she became the head of the abbey school. Mechtilde’s warmth, good sense, and extraordinary ability to read hearts made her a frequent counselor and comfort to the girls, the nuns, and the lay persons who visited the abbey. Often in prayer Mechtilde beheld Christ with His heart revealed. Other times, she felt herself to be enclosed with His Heart. When Mechtilde discovered that her student Gertrude – the future Saint Gertrude the Great – had been writing down the graces Mechtilde had shared with her, she was troubled. But Jesus himself reassured her. He even gave her a title for the work: The Book of Special Graces. At age fifty-eight, Mechtilde took ill. She asked the Lord to permit her to linger for the salvation of others. She died eight painful years later. Jesus told her, “Consider the immensity of my love: If you want to know it well, nowhere will you find it more clearly expressed than in the Gospel. No one has ever heard expressed stronger or more tender sentiments than these. As my Father loved me, so I have loved you.”
Saint Mechtilde died in the Monastery of
Helfta on November 19, 1298. Her feast is celebrated
on the anniversary of her death, November 19th.

SOCIAL CONCERNS
COMMISSION A sincere THANK YOU to all those who baked for the West Side Catholic Center luncheon on
Tuesday, November 21, 2017. The many hot lunches that we served consisted of penne pasta with meatballs, salad, rolls with butter and also included a generous portion of your fresh baked pastries. All were most appreciative. Remember to mark your calendar for our next serving date, Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Thank you again for your continued support and generosity to the West Side Catholic Center.
ST. ANTHONY'S 50+ SOCIAL
CLUB If you haven't already signed up for our Christmas party being held this year on December 7th, please call Dan Lewandowski 440-888-7587 or Jerry Kaszar 440-885-3934 by November 30th. We must a have exact count for the caterers. Thank you.
CHRISTMAS MASS CARDS Christmas Mass Cards will be sold after most Masses starting next weekend, December 2/3 and the following weekends of December 9/10 and 16/17.
Cards for the living are $2.00 and prayer cards for our deceased love ones are $1.00. Cards may also be purchased at the rectory during regular business hours through Thursday, December 21st.
WEEKLY MASS REMINDER The Collect is prayed at the end of the Introductory Rites of the Mass. Each person comes to Mass with special intentions in their heart. When the priest says Let us pray, present those intentions to God. The priest collects them into one prayer, the Collect, and presents them to God.
CATHOLIC GLOSSARY Gospel: The word Gospel means “Good News.” At every Mass, we listen to the Good News of our salvation in Jesus Christ. We need to do more than hear the Good News, we bring the Good News to the world.
MYSTAGOGICAL MOMENTS
Mystagogy (mist-a-go-gee) is prayerful reflection on the presence of God in the midst of events. This section will offer a question to begin your conversation with God. Question: The psalm response was “The Lord is my
shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” What do you
really need? When has God brought you to green
pasture?

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY Every room in the house should have a crucifix. This way, we are always reminded of our Catholic faith and the love of God revealed by the cross of Jesus our King.
COOKIES FOR A CAUSE
Calling all women of the parish. Would you like to help bring joy to someone’s heart…and taste buds? Then join the Women’s Faith Ministry on Saturday, December 9 from 10 a.m. to
noon in the Hospitality Room for a Christmas cookie decorating party. We are asking participants to bring two dozen plain or shaped (packaged or baked) sugar cookies. All other supplies will be provided. No decorating experience necessary.
This second “Cookies for a Cause” is an example of the service projects that WFM offers throughout the year. It was great fun last year and brought much joy to those at St. Malachi's who received the cookies. Please RSVP no later than Monday, December 4 by calling the Parish Office at (440) 842-2666 or via email at [email protected]. This will help us to determine the amount of supplies needed. Feel free to invite other women too.
LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA

more time developing your spiritual life, but cannot
seem to find time to do so? If so, then please check

ADULT FAITH CLASSES “The Church has always considered catechesis one of
her primary tasks, for, before Christ ascended to His
Father after His resurrection, He gave the apostles a
final command — to make disciples of all nations and
to teach them to observe all that He had commanded.”
— St. John Paul II from his apostolic exhortation
Catechesi Tradendae All classes take place in the Hospitality Room. Each
class will be one hour, with no prior classes necessary.
All are welcome.
WEEKLY WORK OF MERCY Giving Tuesday is coming. Go to wegivecatholic.org and help the Church in Cleveland share the Good News of Jesus. Simply use your computer or smartphone to
access www.weGiveCatholic.org, pull down the list of participants and search for St. Anthony of Padua Parish, Parma and St. Anthony of Padua School, Parma. In the spirit of the season, please be generous. And as always we appreciate your ongoing support.

APOSTLESHIP OF PRAYER INTENTION FOR DECEMBER
The Elderly: That the elderly, sustained by
families and Christian communities, may apply
their wisdom and experience to spreading the
faith and forming the new generation.
Mature experienced members of our families,
parishes and societies have much to offer to the
formation of young people today. Experience
matters. The elderly are a treasure who inform our
minds and spirits with lessons of the past so that we
might better approach our future.
In the medical field, risk-taking among the
young is seen as a great risk factor for injury or
unhealthy behavior. Because the young have energy
and ideals, they can accomplish much in the arenas
of family, social and work life. On the other hand,
without experience, the young tend to take risks not
cautioned by the school of hard knocks. Here is
where our elders can be of great help in spiritual and
personal formation.
Pope Francis, in a radio address in 2016,
proclaimed: “The Church regards the elderly with
affection, gratitude, and high esteem. They are an
essential part of the Christian community and of
society: in particular they represent the roots and the
memory of a people … Your maturity and wisdom,
accumulated over the years can help younger people
in search of their own way, support them on the path
of growth, and openness to the future.”
It is a duty, an honor and a privilege to share
our holy faith with those who come behind us. It is
likewise a duty, honor and privilege to learn from
those who have gone before us. How many of us
have experienced firsthand the lessons of wisdom
from a grandmother, grandfather, or elder among our
acquaintances? All of us must lower our pride and
open our hearts to listen to our elders: elders at the
same time, can learn from listening to the young.
Seminarian of the Week
Let’s promote vocations by praying for
our diocesan seminarians.
Please pray for Christopher Stein
