SUNDAY THOUGHT

Ephesians 4:7, 20-24

Some people would be of the opinion that Christians are

peaceable people. This is true in one sense but in another

sense, nothing could be further from the truth. A Christian

knows that there is a war going on. This war is a war going

on within each of us. As St. Paul tells us in today’s second

reading, it is a war between the “old” self and the “new”

self. My old self is the self that is separated from God.

When I act out of the old self I am acting in a way that

does not take into consideration my connection with God.

The old self is always thinking about how others will see

me. A sign that the old self is still living in me is when I

judge the value of an action, not on the basis of the action

itself, but on the basis of how the action will be accepted.

It is as though one had always to postpone his judgement

until he looked at the audience. When we operate out of

our old selves, we have lost contact with whom we really

are in God’s eyes. The old self has no thoughts of its own.

Whatever is fashionable in the culture is what he or she

thinks. Jesus was firmly grounded in His relationship to

His Father. He didn’t have two lives – one that He lived

that didn’t take this relationship to His Father into account

and then one that He lived that did take this relationship

into account. Our new self is one that is firmly connected

to God. It gives us freedom and a strong sense of who we

are and what God intends us to become.

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 5, 2018

CELEBRATING THE SAINTS

Saint Rose of Viterbo, Virgin (c1233-1251)

Born of poor and pious parents, even as a child Rose

had a great desire to pray and to aid the poor. When

but three years old, she allegedly raised to life her

maternal aunt. At the age of seven, she had already

lived the life of a recluse, devoting herself to

penances. She prayed much for the conversion of

sinners. Rose was not yet ten years old when the

Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have instructed her to

enter the Third Order of St. Francis and to preach

penance in Viterbo, at the that time under the rule of

Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor.

Rose was soon admitted to the Franciscan

Third Order and adopted its religious habit, a simple

tunic with a cord around her waist. While walking the

streets with a crucifix in her hand, she would exhort

others to be faithful to the Catholic Church. Her

mission seems to have lasted for about two years. In

January 1250, Viterbo, her native city, was then in

revolt against the pope. When Rose took the pope’s

side against the emperor, she and her family were

exiled from the city and she took refuge in a

neighboring town. When the pope’s side won in

Viterbo, Rose was allowed to return where she died of

illness the following year.

Rose’s feast is celebrated yearly in Viterbo on

September 4

th

. In the Roman Martyrology, she is

remembered on the day of her death, March 6

th

, as

“Blessed Rose,” although the title of “saint” has been

popularly applied to her for centuries. The Franciscan

Third Order claims St. Rose of Viterbo as their own.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN

INITIATION OF ADULTS

RCIA is a process where

adults interested in joining

the Catholic Church begin their formation in the

Catholic faith. Through weekly meetings, personal

time in prayer, and support from the faithful, inquirers

deepen their relationship with God as they seek to

receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism,

Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist). RCIA

resumes in September. If you, or anyone you know, is

interested in becoming Catholic, contact Fr. Peter at

(440) 842-2666 or [email protected].

HEY CATHOLIC! DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that there are requirements when

choosing a godparent? A godparent is a person

who assists an adult in Christian initiation or

together with the parents presents an infant for

baptism. A sponsor helps the baptized person to

lead a Christian life and to fulfill faithfully the

obligations of the Catholic faith.

According to Canon 874.1, a godparent must:

♦ be designated and have the aptitude and

intention of fulfilling this function;

♦ have completed the sixteenth year of age;

♦ be a fully initiated Catholic who is actively

leads a life of faith

♦ not be bound by any canonical penalty

legitimately imposed or declared;

♦ not be the father or mother of the one to be

baptized.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

“‘What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will

anguish, or distress, or persecution, or

famine…?’ (Rom 8:35) Try substituting your spouse’s

name for ‘Christ.' Jesus never said it would be easy.

Call on the power of God and your commitment to

each other during hard times.”

——-Daily Marriage Tip for July 30, 2018 from

http://www.foryourmarriage.org

WEEKLY MASS REMINDER

“The reading of the Gospel constitutes the high point

of the Liturgy of the Word. The Liturgy itself teaches

the great reverence that is to be shown to this reading

by setting it off from the other readings with special

marks of honor, by the fact of which minister is

appointed to proclaim it and by the blessing or prayer

with which he prepares himself; and also by the fact

that through their acclamations the faithful

acknowledge and confess that Christ is present and is

speaking to them and stand as they listen to the

reading; and by the mere fact of the marks of

reverence that are given to the Book of the Gospels.”

— from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal,

CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY CORNER

“Just as Christ, after His baptism and the

coming upon Him of the Holy Spirit went forth

and defeated the adversary, so also with you.

After holy Baptism and the Mystical Chrism,

having put on the full suit of armor of the Holy

Spirit, you are to withstand the power of the

adversary, and defeat him, saying, ‘I am able to

do all things in Christ, Who strengthens me.’” —

EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 5, 2018

2018 PRAYER INTENTION OF POPE FRANCIS

FOR AUGUST

The Treasure of Families: That the far -reaching

decisions of economists and politicians may protect

the family as a treasure of humanity.

CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART

OF MARY AND THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

Most holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary,

united in perfect love, as you look

upon us with mercy and caring, we

consecrate our hearts, our lives, our

family to you. We know the beautiful example of

your home in Nazareth was meant to be a model for

each of our families. We hope to have, with your

help, the unity and strong enduring love you gave to

one another. May our home be filled with joy. May

sincere affection, patience, tolerance and mutual

respect be freely given to all. May our prayers be

filled with the needs of others, not just ourselves and

may we always be close to your sacraments. Bless

those who are present, as well as those who are

absent, both living and dead; may peace be among us

and when we are tested, grant us the Christian

acceptance of God’s will. Keep our family close to

your Hearts; may your special protection be with us

always. Most Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, hear

our prayer.

Amen.

EVANGELIZATION TIP

We typically celebrate birthdays and wedding

anniversaries, but what about the anniversaries of our

Sacraments? Celebrate the day you were baptized or

received Holy Communion for the first time. Those

events are important as well.

CATHOLIC GLOSSARY

means to holiness.

BLESSING OF THE WEEK

The Book of Blessings is the liturgical book

used by priests and deacons to bless people or

objects for religious use. If you come across a

blessing you need to receive, do not be afraid to ask

a priest or deacon.

This week’s blessing is the Blessing of a

Family. Recognizing that family life begins with the

Sacrament of Marriage, the blessing reminds us that

the family serves a special role in the life of the

Church and in civil society. This blessing asks God

to foster the Christian life within the family as it

performs its mission of witnessing to Jesus Christ in

the world.

SEMINARIANS OF THE WEEK

This week, we pray for Sean

Neville, James Parisi, and Brian

Petro.
