A Message from Fr. Tom:

A new look: After months of delays and good inten-

tions, we are finally transitioning into a new look for the

weekly parish bulletin. My hope has been to re-organize

how we present information in the bulletin so that we do

it in a more consistent and eye-pleasing way. I have

adopted a format from bulletins that I ran in my previous

pastorates. For those with an interest in such things and

with really sharp eyes, one will notice that there is a cer-

tain “family resemblance” between this bulletin format and the one over at St. Pe-

ter’s. That’s not a mistake… but this will be the third generation continuing to

evolve from the original pattern Fr. Bergbower and I used over 10 years ago over

there. In the meantime, the St. Peter’s bulletin has evolved in its own ways as

well. Thus there are similarities, but they are hardly ‘the same’ anymore!

Please bear with us as we work to perfect the formatting and distribution of

items. My hope is that, in time, parishioners will come to appreciate the new look

and that the parish bulletin will continue to be an important way to communicate

the events that take place in our parish, school, and community. The next job in

front of us will be to polish up the new web page, and hopefully get that launched

sooner, rather than later!

Lenten Regulations: The Season of Lent began this year on Ash Wednesday, February

14, 2018 and will end just prior to the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy

Thursday, March 29, 2018, when the Paschal Triduum begins. Lent is the principal

penitential season in the Church year. All the Christian Faithful are urged to develop

and maintain a voluntary program of self-denial, serious prayer, and the performance

of deeds of charity and mercy (including giving of alms), in addition to the following

minimal Lenten disciplines:

! ABSTINENCE – Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat

on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent.

! While abstinence is not required under the age of 14, it is laudable that

parents teach children abstinence and other suitable acts penance as a

way to learn and understand the true spirit of the Lenten season.

! FAST – Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednes-

day and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meat-

less meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength

may be taken according to each person’s needs, but together these two should not

equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are al-

lowed.

! Over age 59, it is laudable to follow the discipline of fasting on these days,

but one should not scruple about modifying or breaking the fast at this age

when matters of health and well-being come into question.

! Under age 59, when pregnant or nursing, performing significant manual

labor, or suffering from a serious illness (a chronic illness such as diabetes

or hypoglycemia, or a more immediate illness where fasting would not be

healthy,) it may be morally impossible to follow this precept.

! To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful.
