ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

At Babel, says the Book of Genesis, God

“confused the speech of all the world.” Since then

one of the most powerful factors keeping people

apart and unfriendly is the inability of one nation to

understand what the other nations are saying. This is

sad, and certainly out of harmony with God’s ideal.

Occasionally, He shows us that to remind us that af-

ter the resurrection of the dead the whole world will

once more “speak the same language” (Genesis

11:1).

Sometimes He hints at this by natural means.

In our time, for instance, He has given us Pope Saint

John Paul II, who has a gift for learning languages.

When he addressed people of the major language

groups, he spoke in their own vernaculars. In scrip-

ture, God gave a miraculous gift of tongues to the

Apostles on Pentecost. They spoke to the crowds of

Jerusalem in their own Aramaic tongue; but those

who did not speak Aramaic heard the words in their

own languages: “Each of us hears them speaking in

their own tongue” (Today’s first reading).

Even if we are not gifted by wit or the ability

to speak many languages, there is one language

which we all can speak, and everyone can under-

stand. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne spoke this

language. Rose (1764-1852) was the foundress in

this country of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She

spent most of her life in the United States in Mis-

souri, teaching school to children of European back-

ground; but it was her dream to teach Native Ameri-

can children. Finally, in 1841, when she was 72, this

devout nun got her wish, establishing a school in

Kansas for Potawatomi Indian girls. Practically, she

proved a failure as a teacher because she could not

learn the difficult Indian language. But she could

and did take care of the sick and pray for the Indi-

ans. This, the Potawatomi understood and appreci-

ated. In fact, they called her “QUAH-KAH-

KANUM-AD” which meant “Woman Who Prays

Always”. People of every nation appreciate the lan-

guage of love.

ADORATION CHAPEL

An Act of Oblation to the Holy Spirit: On my knees before the great cloud of heavenly witnessed, I of-

fer myself body and soul to thee, eternal spirit of God. I adore the brightness of they purity, the unerring

keenness of thy justice and the might of thy love. Thou art the strength and light of my soul. In thee I

live and move and have my being. I desire never to grieve thee by unfaithfulness to grace, and I pray with all my

heart to be kept from the smallest sin against thee. Make me faithful in every thought, and grant that I may always

listen to thy voice, watch for thy light, and follow thy gracious inspirations. I cling to thee and give myself to thee,

and I ask thee by thy compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced feet of Jesus, looking at

His five wounds, trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened side and stricken heart. I implore thee,

adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity so to keep me in thy grace that I may never sin against thee with the sin

which thou wilt not forgive. Grant to me the grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and of the Son to say to thee

always and everywhere, “Speak, Lord, for Thy servant hears.” Amen. ~After a Prayer by Cardinal Newman

PRO LIFE THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

The real question today is not when human life begins, but what is the value of

human life? The abortionist who reassembles the arms and legs of a tiny baby to make sure all its parts have been

torn from its mother’s body can hardly doubt whether it is a human being. The real question for him and for all of

us is whether that tiny human life has a God-given right to be protected by law-the same right we have.

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA

"Tony, Tony come around! Something's lost that must be found!"

Did you learn this rhyme in childhood? St. Anthony of Padua is

more than the patron saint for lost items. By his life, he shows a spe-

cial interest in lost souls. St. Anthony was born to noble parents, but

he preferred a simple life of faith to the riches of his childhood. He

joined the Franciscan order in 1220. He quickly became known for

his eloquence in preaching. He had a way of reaching all sorts, from

nobles to clergy to those who had fallen away from the Catholic

faith. In addition to preaching, St. Anthony organized supplies for

the poor and negotiated release for prisoners of war between Italian

city-states. However you or your loved ones feel lost this week, pray

for St. Anthony's intercession!

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA CHURCH LORAIN, OH

THE COMMUNION RITE WRITTEN BY RITA THIRON & FR. RYAN ROJO

The Communion Rite can be examined in three distinct parts: The preparation of Communion (which we looked at

last week), the reception of Holy Communion, and the period after Communion

DISTRIBUTION OF HOLY COMMUNION - The entirety of the Mass—The Introductory Rites, the readings, the inter-

cessions, etc.—has been orienting us toward unity. Even in the Eucharistic Prayer we prayed “that partaking of the

Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit” (Eucharistic Prayer II). The source and

climax of this unity is our reception of the sacrament of unity—Holy Communion.

Scripture reminds us that we, though many, partake of one bread; we are members of one body (1 Cor 10:16,17). In

Holy Communion, the Body of Christ gives life to the Body of Christ, the Church. The minister, while holding the

consecrated host, simply says “The Body of Christ.” We respond “Amen.” This is an Aramaic word, translated liter-

ally as “so be it” or more simply as “I believe.” This exchange of faith is actually very ancient—we find it in the writ-

ings of St. Augustine (Sermon 262, c. 405-411).

The restoration of the chalice to the faithful was one of the most significant liturgical developments in recent decades.

When we receive the Blood of Christ, we likewise respond “Amen.” This is a fuller sign of our sharing in the one sac-

rifice of Christ who shed his Blood for us. [See the “Norms for the Distribution and Reception of Holy Communion

under Both Kinds in the Diocese of the United States of America” (April 7, 2002) as well as GIRM 281-287.]

The normal posture for receiving Holy Communion in the diocese of the United States is standing, unless an individ-

ual might choose to kneel. When we receive the Body of Christ or the Blood of Christ, we bow our heads as a sign of

reverence. The consecrated host can be received on the tongue or in the hand at the discretion of the communicant

(GIRM 160).

Together, we process to receive Holy Communion. As a further sign of our unity, a Communion chant, hymn, or the

prescribed antiphon is sung. It begins when the priest is receiving Holy Communion and continues as long as the

faithful are receiving Communion (GURM 86, 159). The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says this music

expresses “the spiritual union of the communicants by means of the unity of their voices, to show gladness of heart,

and to bring out more clearly the ‘communitarian’ character of the procession to receive the Eucharist” (GIRM 86).

To be continued next week
