Fr. K’s LAWS OF LOVE
Fort Hancock is located
on the farthest tip of
Sandy Hook which
reaches out into the
New Jersey coast.
During World War II it
w a s a m i l i t a r y
training center. A civilian who
lived nearby wanted to bring the
comfort of God's Word to the
thousands of young men stationed
there, who were preparing for the
day they would be sent off to battle
overseas. The military authorities
would not permit this man to enter
in person. Not to be denied, he
asked a firm that specialized in
novelties to make several thousand
mirrors about three inches in
diameter. On the back of each
mirror he had printed the words of
St. John 3:16: "God so loved the
world that He gave His only Son,
that those who believe in Him may
not perish, but have everlasting
life." Beneath these words he had
this direction: "If you want to see
who it is that God loves, look on
the other side." As each soldier
looked at himself he saw the
person whom God loved.
That mirror could have had printed
on it the Ten Commandments as
another proof that God loves us.
Jesus told us in this weekend's
Gospel: "If you love me, you will
keep my commandments" (John
14:15). We prove our love for God
by keeping His commandments.
The laws of God are loving
directions, which are the best for
us. They tell us what is best for us
individually and as a human
family.
Take the first commandment (i.e.,
Worship God alone): How do people
hurt themselves when they fail to
worship the one true God? People
will worship something, things
that are not only beneath God but
beneath ourselves. In ancient times
people worshiped the sun or an
animal. Today, we are prone to
worship money, or a car, or fine
clothes, or food and drink - things
that we become so overly concerned
about, as to make them the be-all
and end-all of our lives ... they
become "gods" to us. If or when this
happens, we are breaking the First
Commandment. God the Father
hoped to protect us from these false
gods, the worship of which brings
n o t h i n g b u t s t r e s s a n d
disappointment, by commanding
us to adore Him alone, whose love
brings us everything.
What happens when people take
the name of the Lord in vain? The
lies and pain caused by well-
educated lawyers and politicians,
who begin their terms in public
service by placing their hands on
the Bible and swearing to be
truthful and to execute their offices
to the best of their ability, so help
me God. Given the widespread
m i s s - i n f o r m a t i o n a n d
deliberate untruths we are
routinely subjected to, one wonders
whether it is possible to obtain
truth and justice today.
Do not kill. What evils we would
have avoided if we but kept that
loving law - war, murder, abortion,
mercy-killing, drug abuse, reckless
driving. Out of love God gave this
law to protect our own health and
life and the life and health of
others.
The love given us in the sixth
commandment (do not commit
adultery), is often broken through
false love! Family misery, divorce,
unhappy children, murder,
sexually transmitted diseases -
these are just some of the evils God
wanted to spare us by giving us a
commandment against adultery
and impurity.
Do not steal; do not bear false
witness; do not covet your
neighbor's spouse, or your
neighbor's property. These are
among the very best rules for all
people.
When Mommy tells little Johnny:
"Don't play in the street," is she
being mean or is she loving? The
same is true with God.
As we renew Christ's death for our
disobedience to God's laws, may we
realize that God gave us those laws
out of love. May we determine to
keep those laws - out of love.
God bless you.
Sharing the Gospel
If you love Jesus, you will do what he asks. If someone hurts your feelings, Jesus asks
you to forgive. If someone is hard to get along with, Jesus asks you to show love. If
someone is sick, Jesus asks you to pray. Learn from Jesus. Follow his example. Love
all people like God does.
Prayer
Jesus, help me to love you enough to do all that you ask.

EXPLORE THE SUNDAY GOSPEL The Promise of the Holy Spirit John Chapter 14 Verses 15-21
TAKE TIME TO CHAT •What is it like to be loved by God?
•Which of the 10 commandments is most challenging to you?
•In today’s Gospel, Jesus promises the Holy Spirit will come, but
that the world doesn’t know him yet and can’t see him. Is that
still the case today? Why or why not?
MEET OUR EXTENDED FAMILY St. Vincent Pallotti (Feast Day January 22) 1795-1850
St Vincent Pallotti was born in 1795 in Rome. It is said that he
was struggling with his studies, so his mother told him to ask
the Holy Spirit for help. After he prayed a novena to the Holy
Spirit, he became a great student! St. Vincent Pallotti became a
priest who cared for souls and devoted himself completely to
God. He was even known to bi-locate to be able to serve more
people at one time.
FAMILY FUN Family Movie Night
Pick a movie that the whole family will enjoy and have a family
movie night. It could be a favorite movie from childhood or
something brand new that no one has ever seen. Get some
pillows, blankets, snacks, and enjoy!
FAMILY PRAYER Prayer to the Holy Spirit Creator Spirit, Come and bless us with your heavenly grace. You
are called by the names of Paraclete, Gift of God Most High,
Spring of Life, Fire, Love, and the Soul’s Anointing. You are the
finger of the Father’s right hand. You are the clear promise of
the Father. Give our human tongues the grace of inspired
speech. Kindle your Light in our minds, pour Your Love into our
hearts, and uphold with Your Unfailing Strength the frailty of
our human nature. Drive our enemy far from us and give us your
gift of peace. Ever guiding us, may we be always the stewards of
Your Love.
Grant that through You, Most Holy Spirit, we may know the
Father and the Son, and our faith professing, God Three in One.
Holy Spirit of Love, teach us that stewardship is the disciple’s
response. Amen.
