The contrast between the processional reading in today’s

liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are

given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled

in Jesus.

First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to

come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not

know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a

worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman

occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, ex-

actly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we

follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not

The Donkey

by G.K. Chesterton

When fishes flew and forests walked

And figs grew upon thorn,

Some moment when the moon was blood

Then surely I was born;

With monstrous head and sickening cry

And ears like errant wings,

The devil’s walking parody

On all four-footed things.

The tattered outlaw of the earth,

Of ancient crooked will;

Starve, scourge, deride me: I am dumb,

I keep my secret still.

Fools! For I also had my hour;

One far fierce hour and sweet:

There was a shout about my ears,

And palms before my feet.

Palm Sunday is a moveable Christian Feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus’ trium-

phal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels. During Palm Sunday Mass, palms are distributed

to parishioners who carry them in a ritual procession into church. The palms are blessed and many people will fashion them

into small crosses or other items of personal devotion. These may be returned to the church, or kept for the year. Because the

palms are blessed, they may not be discarded as trash. In the Gospels, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a young donkey, and to the lav-

ish praise of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms or small branches, in front of him as a sign of homage. This was a

customary practice for people of great respect. Palm branches are widely recognized symbol of peace and victory, hence their pre-

ferred use on Palm Sunday. The use of a donkey instead of a horse is highly symbolic, it represents the humble arrival of someone in

peace, as opposed to arriving on a steed in war. A week later, Christ would rise from the dead on the first Easter.

Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when he established the sacrament of Holy

Communion prior to his arrest and crucifixion. It also commemorates His institution of the priesthood. Jesus celebrated the

dinner as a Passover feast. Christ would fulfill His role as the Christian victim of the Passover for all to be saved by His

final sacrifice. The Last Supper was the final meal Jesus shared with his Disciples in Jerusalem. During the meal, Jesus

predicts his betrayal. The central observance of Holy Thursday is the ritual reenactment of the Last Supper at Mass. This event is

celebrated at every Mass, as party of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, but it is specially commemorated on Holy Thursday. He also estab-

lishes the special priesthood for his disciples, which is distinct from the "priesthood of all believers." Christ washed the feet of his

Disciples, who would become the first priests.

Fast Abstinence; Passover begins at sunset.

Good Friday is the day on which Jesus Christ, having been betrayed by Judas and sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate,

was crucified for the sins of mankind. Good Friday is the second day of the Easter Triduum, the period from the Mass of the

Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. The stations of the Cross will be led at 3 PM in the Church. THEN

WE BEGIN the next part of the Veneration SERVICE at 7:15 PM.

Holy Saturday the Vigil of Easter. It is important to not be late. It is the close of the season of Lent and penance, and the

beginning of paschal time, which is one of rejoicing and a faithfully fantastic night of experiencing God! Holy Saturday to

pray and to confer the sacrament of baptism. The vigil last through the night until dawn on Easter Sunday, when the Alleluia

is sung for the first time since the beginning of Lent, and the faithful—including the newly baptized—break their 40-hour

fast by receiving Communion.

Easter is the principle feast of the ecclesiastical year. Easter Sunday comes at the end of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving

known as Lent and is the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year. Easter is commemorating the slaying of the true lamb

of God and the resurrection of Christ, the corner-stone upon which faith is built, it is also the oldest feast of the Christian Church, as

old as Christianity, the connecting link between the Old and New Testaments. Through spiritually with Christ on Good Friday, the

day of His Crucifixion, so that we can rise with Him in New life on Easter. Since Easter represents the fulfillment of God's promises

to mankind, it is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar.
