ST. ANTHONY PARISH COHASSET, MA

Dear Parishioners,

St. Mark, in his Gospel, quotes Jesus when he says: “Go into

the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation.”

This command of Christ has inspired countless men and women

throughout the Church’s history to give themselves to the work

of spreading the good news. The Second Vatican Council

repeated and renewed this mandate of the Lord calling all

members of the Church to involve themselves in witnessing to

the Gospel.

As part of its renewal of the Church, the Council called for a

number of new structures to promote active involvement and

collaboration in the mission of the Church. After the Council, a

new structure was proposed by the Church to call forth in an

orderly fashion the insights and cooperation of persons at the

level of the local community. This structure is the Parish Pastoral

Council.

The Code of Canon Law states that the Parish Pastoral

Council possesses a consultative vote only and is governed by the

norms of the diocesan bishop. The Council consists of ex officio

members, the pastor, parochial vicars, deacons, and pastoral

associates. Elected and appointed members are the Directors of

Religious Education and those members elected by vote of the

parishioners.

These words serve as a follow up to my words of last week

when I introduced the collaborative effort which St. Anthony

Parish will have with St. Mary Parish in Hull. When this becomes

a reality next June 1st each church and parish will remain

separate, but the Parish Pastoral Council will be shared by the

two parishes, with members elected from both parishes. This

makes sense, since many activities now offered in each parish

would just be duplicated if the vision and activities of the

collaborative parish are not shared. At the same time the Parish

Finance Councils will remain separate, with each Church/Parish

retaining their own financial obligations and expenditures.

We have a wonderful Parish Council, and next week I will

introduce you to some of the exciting things they are planning. Sincerely,

Fr John R. Mulvehill
