TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. f we

PROFETAS VERDADEROS Hoy en Deuteronomio oímos que las palabras de Dios llenarán la boca de un profeta verdadero, pero un profeta falso pondrá, por así decirlo, palabras meramente humanas en boca de Dios. En el Evangelio según san Marcos, vemos a Jesús enseñando y curando como un profeta verdadero con la autoridad de la voz de Dios. La historia de nuestra Iglesia está llena de ambos tipos de profetas. Algunos profetas falsos fueron extremadamente populares y eran muy versados en la Sagrada Escritura, incluso ocupaban puestos de autoridad eclesial. Pero en el Evangelio de hoy descubrimos que la fama de Jesús se extendió porque enseñaba con autoridad; no era una autoridad porque fuera popular o famoso. En otra parte, descubrimos con él, cuando es tentado y enfrenta a Satanás en el desierto, que cualquiera puede citar la Sagrada Escritura, incluso si estos van en contra de los propósitos de Dios. Hoy oímos que su autoridad no era como la de los escribas, que eran la autoridad oficial religiosa en su época. Nuestra tarea es hacer todo lo posible por saber identificar a los verdaderos profetas que están entre nosotros y también a ser verdaderos profetas. The Diocese of Stockton is very pleased to announce that Pope Francis today appointed Bishop Myron Cotta to succeed Bishop Stephen Blaire as Bishop of Stockton who submitted his resignation to the Holy Father when he reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 on December 22, 2016. Bishop Cotta was born of Portuguese heritage in the Merced County community of Dos Palos on March 21, 1953. As a native son of the Central Valley he knows the area very well and in turn is well known for

his pastoral leadership. He served as Vicar General in the Diocese of Fresno where he was a priest and most recently served as Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Sacramento. Bishop Cotta will be installed as the sixth bishop of the Diocese on Thursday, March 15, 2018. Until that date, Bishop Blaire will serve as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese. The Diocese of Stockton embraces more than 10,000 square miles covering the Counties of San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mono, and Alpine, with a diverse Catholic population of over 300,000 people of many races and cultures. The Diocese of Stockton extends a very warm welcome to Bishop Myron Cotta.

La diócesis de Stockton se complace en anunciar que el Papa Francisco ha nombrado hoy al Obispo Myron Cotta como sucesor del Obispo Stephen Blaire, quien presentó su renuncia obligatoria al Santo Padre como Obispo de Stockton cuando llegó a la edad de 75 años, el 22 de diciembre de 2016. El Obispo Cotta nació padres Portugueses, en la comunidad del Condado de Merced de Dos Palos, el 21 de marzo de 1953. Como hijo nativo del Valle

Central conoce muy bien la zona y es a su vez es reconocido por su liderazgo pastoral. Se desempeñó como Vicario General de la diócesis de Fresno, donde sirvió como sacerdote y, más recientemente, como obispo auxiliar en la diócesis de Sacramento. El Obispo Cotta será instalado como el sexto obispo de la diócesis en jueves 15 de marzo de 2018. Hasta esa fecha el obispo Blaire servirá como el administrador apostólico de la diócesis. La diócesis de Stockton abarca más de 10, 000 millas cuadradas cubriendo los condados de San Joaquin, San Estanislao, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Mono y Alpine, con una población Católica de más de 300,000 personas de muchas razas y culturas.
