Missions

in ways that bring us closer to God’s promises for our church and our town.

It has been said that when it comes to Kingdom work, there is room at the table for everyone. The truth is, what we have been doing has been good. In fact it has been very good. But I believe our call is to move from good to great. For that to happen we need to do a Jethro kind of math – the math that engages us in a ministry of multiplication. Opening yourself to that kind of math moves us one step closer.

(Continued from page 1)

Because of your great donations, we were able to drop off 20 complete backpacks and a bag of extra items for foster kids. They will go to the Festival of Sharing in Sedalia on Saturday!

Everyone was very appreciative when the items were dropped off in Ferguson at the regional drop-off location. The backpacks will be a blessing to foster kids at their time of need.

The next project that was chosen is our mitten tree for kids. The items will be give to area schools for children without socks, mittens, or scarves for the winter.

This year, we will also be helping the moms and their children have a better Christmas at A Safe Place, the women’s shelter. If you would like to bake extras for the holidays or donate to help purchase items for the kids, please let me know. More details about this will be made available soon.

Thank you for all your generosity and sharing God’s love here on earth.

Pony Bird Celebrates 40 Years! Music Notes

Dear St.Andrew’s United Methodist Congregation,

Dana and I were members of St. Andrew’s in 1977 when the Pony Bird Home opened. What an incredible experience as we remember so many people from our church there and the DeSoto Community who helped us in our hopes and dreams to provide a home for severely mentally and physically handicapped children. Many of you knew our son, Philip, who was 5 and the first resident in June 1977 when we opened. Dana and I lived in DeSoto for 11 years and found St. Andrew’s our church home! We have so many wonderful memories of our experiences there. Pony Bird has grown from 10 residents and one building to 55 residents and six homes with one of the two of the buildings in DeSoto. Ladies of the church made the Pegasus Quilt which is now hanging between the Hockensmith and McKim Homes. We receive compliments on that beautiful piece all the time. It is still a treasured and valued part of our history. Now that Pony Bird is celebrating 40 years, we hope that you will attend the BBQ in Mapaville for this celebration. We can’t thank you for the support we received through those many stressful years…we were only in our 20’s and Philip was our only child at the time. Our friends in the church participated in fundraising efforts, painted walls for the new home, etc. through those years. It would be delightful to have you attend on Octover 29th from 1-3 PM in Mapaville. Thank you for helping dreams come true!

—Sue and Dana Hockensmith

An invitation to this event with a photo of the Pegasus quilt is located on the bulletin board outside the church office. Sue called and asked that her letter be shared since many members of the congregation were instrumental in getting Pony Bird started. The address for the BBQ is #1 Pony Bird Ln | Mapaville, MO 63065. Lunch, drinks, and fun provided. This is an outdoor event. Please dress for the weather.

Food Pantry Need

Halloween Candy Birthdays Needed

Donations of Halloween candy are needed for Trunk or Treat at St. Andrew's. Please bring candy before October 31st to share with the large number of children who will be visiting that evening. If you’d like to set up a trunk or co-op a trunk, we’ll be on the parking lot from 6-8 PM, weather permitting.

The Fall Bake Sale will be Sunday, November 5, 2017. It is time for our circle's last mission earning event for this year. We will offer autumn treats, goodies for kids, flavored breads, brownies, and seasonal favorites from the past.

Please help us to help others by stopping by after service on Sunday, November 5, 2017. We always appreciate the loving support from our congregation for our mission work.

Our women's circle will have a meeting at church on Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the Youth Sunday School room at 6:15 PM. Those ladies not yet involved are always welcome to join in or come to a meeting to learn more about what we do. I hope you have time to attend.

In Christ's Love, Terry Neckermann Sarah Doremus Circle Chairman

UMW

There will be special music during worship service on October 29th. It is also the date of Singspiration at Redeemer Lutheran and their German dinner.

During a quest for data about the congregation for a recent grant application, it was discovered that many of you have provided a month and day to the church office as to your birthday. This is wonderful! However, in our quest to determine the average age of those attending worship, the lack of the year of your birth is sorely missed. I promise we will only herald your age from the rooftop if you desire us to and will continue to allow you to fudge your age until you have too many wrinkles to pass for 25.

Uncertain if we have the year of your birth? Please contact the church office to find out. I’d hate for the year to be erroneously entered as 1922!
