Greetings in the Name of Our Lord,
We are about to begin the Lenten season. It will
begin on Ash Wednesday, March 5 and continue
until Easter Sunday, April 20. Different traditions
celebrate Lent in several ways. Just to remind you, I
have included some information about Lenten time
and observances.
“Lent is the Christian season of preparation before
Easter. In Western Christianity, Ash Wednesday
marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent,
which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are
not included in the count).
Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for
Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance,
moderation and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to
set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ - his
suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and
resurrection.
Not all Christian churches observe Lent. Lent is
mostly observed by the Lutheran, Methodist,
Presbyterian and Anglican denominations, and also
by Roman Catholics. Eastern Orthodox churches
observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40
days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing
during the Holy Week of Orthodox Easter. Lent for
Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday
(called Clean Monday) and Ash Wednesday is not
observed.
The Bible does not mention the custom of Lent,
however, the practice of repentance and mourning in
ashes is found in 2 Samuel 13:19; Esther 4:1; Job
2:8; Daniel 9:3; and Matthew 11:21.”

This year during Lent I have purchased a booklet “The Sanctuary for Lent 2014.” Each family unit it is re-
ceive one. It is a daily reading which looks in on the encounters that others had with Jesus throughout his min-
istry. Some people were angered by him, some people were puzzled by him, and some people just dismissed
him. But others saw him for who he truly was, and their entire perspective changed. They were transformed
by their encounter with the living Lord. I trust you will use it each day during Lent to enrich your lives.
I will be bringing a series of sermons based on my study of James W. Moore’s book, Give Up Something Bad
for Lent. Often during Lent each year, Christians give up something as an act of sacrifice and spiritual disci-
pline. Often we give up something like chocolate, knowing that after Easter Sunday we can once again enjoy
what we have given up. This study should challenge us to give up something we are better off not doing.
With God’s help we can seek to focus on eliminating one habit or attitude that is destructive. Imagine giving
up envy, jealousy, self-pity, apathy, procrastination, gossip, resentment, or negative thinking. Life would be
much better. I hope it will be helpful to” prepare us to give up something bad while preparing to fully em-
brace the good news of Easter.”
We will be observing special services during Lent this year with First United Methodist, Hope United Church
of Christ and St. Andrew’s. I trust you will make sure you have Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday and Good
Friday on your calendar. Palm Sunday will be the Chancel Choir Cantata and Easter Sunday will be a special
by our Youth Praise Band.
Grace and Peace to you,

Dear Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church:
Thank you for participating at our first church vs. church cook-off. I had good feedback from both of our churches. We certainly enjoyed the fellowship. Congratulations on all three victorious wins. This year your church can certainly claim the title of best cooks. Next time, I won’t ask my members to hold back on their best recipes. (just kidding, ha! ha!) Thanks again for participating and making this a wonderful event. We pray with you that the efforts of ending malaria can come true. God Bless, Alex M. Segura, Outreach Chairperson

COMMUNITY DINNER CHAIR NEEDED
St. Andrew’s UMC Community Dinners chaired by Marsha Greenstreet came
to an end at the end of 2013. During a church meeting 15 years ago, it was mentioned that we needed to find some way to raise supplemental funds for various functions within our church, such as Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, etc. Before the meeting adjourned, Marsha Greenstreet said, “We can do that.” Along with Steve Richardson and Karen Huffman, the St. Andrew’s Community Dinners were born. With the help of many, especially that of Evelyn Lewis, Marsha has been in charge of
this fund raiser for the last 15 years. They have hosted as many as ten dinners a year, down to four a year for the last few years. These events have raised funds to provide assistance to the church in many ways such as fellowship supplies, kitchen supplies, bereavement dinners, Christmas bonuses for employees, Vacation Bible School materials, donations to Relay for Life, needed church equipment and numerous other items within the church that otherwise would ot have been possible. A huge and heartfelt thank you goes to all of the volunteers that worked on the dinners over the years; it would not have been possible without you. If anyone has the desire to continue the Community Dinners, Marsha would assist in any way possible. Pray about it, and if it seems right, give Marsha a call at (636) 789-2652. —Marsha Greenstreet

NURTURE COMMITTEE UPDATE
Thank you to all who signed up for our first quarter to serve our church as
fellowship hosts, liturgists and communion servers. The pastor leads the
church, and the people are about service. It takes many to complete and
enhance our Sunday services. Everything we volunteer to do at St. Andrew's
is a blessing to our Lord and congregation.

Sarah Doremus Circle News - (2013 year end report)
Ending the year 2013 I am pleased to report how we were active in earning mission funds and how our
circle shared them. Our two annual bake sales, rummage sale, and pecan fund raiser were all successful
because of you—our generous congregation. We distributed $3,500 last year and could not have done
this mission work without the devoted circle women and the generous hearts of our folks at St.
Andrew's UMC supporting our efforts.
This is God's work, and we are all His disciples. When we work and share with others, we're making God
smile and the needy get blessed. How beautiful is that? As chairman of our circle, I sincerely thank
everyone.

Valentine Bake Sale 2/9/14 Report
I am pleased to share with everyone how well our circle's Valentine bake sale went last
week. Profits earned were $299, and all of this is contributed to our mission causes that
we will distribute this year. Many thanks to our circle women and others for their time
and effort in preparing goodies for this sale, and working. And sincere appreciation goes
to our generous congregation for helping us do God's work once again for St. Andrew's. I
am grateful to all who are a part of our mission work as it brings great rewards.
