PASTORAL LETTERJoan writes,

As I write it is early February we are rejoicing in Jacky's appointment as our new Rector. We recognise that our United Parish consists of 4 very different churches with many different personalities within each one. I am both delighted and amazed that someone who knows all that actually wants to stay and be our Rector! Variety is the spice of life, but it also brings clashes of opinion. Difference and change can be challenging and exciting but it can also seem threatening.

We all need to be listened to and respected – not just “tolerated” for that implies simply being “put up with”.

In the Church Times this week there is a reflection offered for use on Racial Justice Sunday and this text by Robert Becher seemed apt.

“ You have all been invited at this time to this place We don't just want an invitation. We want to be welcomed. You are all offered a warm welcome to this place We don't just want to be welcomed. We want to have a voice. You are all welcome and this is a place for listening. We don't just want a voice. We want to be heard. You are all welcome here and your story will be heard. We don't only want to be heard. We want to be believed. You are welcome to this place where no truth is denied. We don't only want to be believed. We want to be trusted. You are welcome to this place where your words are accepted. We don't only want to be trusted. We want to be loved. You are welcome to this place where God's love embraces all. We don't only want to be loved. We want to know we belong. Whoever belongs to God, belongs among us, for we are one in Christ.” A jigsaw is incomplete if one piece is missing and no one piece is more important than another. Listening may mean having the courage to adjust some of our views and travelling to places neither of us have been before.

I close with some words of Sadhu Sundar Singh

“The same breath is blown into the flute, cornet and bagpipe but different music is produced according to the different instrument. In the same way, the one Spirit works in us but, different results are produced and God is glorified through them according to one's temperament and personality.”

During the remaining part of the Vacancy and under Jacky's leadership we will continue to work out what is involved in being a United Parish.

The Prayer of the United Parish as we wait for the Installation of our New Rector

Heavenly Father, in our time of preparation as we wait for our New Rector to be welcomed formally into our Parish

May we recognise what you are calling us to do in the way of supporting Jacky in her new role.

May her ministry be nourished by solitude, silence and simplicity, as well as by action and creativity, as she prepares for her new ministry amongst us.

May she feel continually enriched and strengthened by our love, support and prayers. And may she be filled with the Holy Spirit, as she continues to answer your call.AMEN

Lent Course – do join us!!This year’s Lent course will use the film The Greatest Showman as the basis of our discussions. Our discussions are always interesting, informal and gentle, and often filled with laughter!

During Lent, the group will run at Crowell, on each Wednesday of Lent between 2.30-4pm.

The Greatest Showman is the 2018 Golden Globe-nominated movie starring Hugh Jackman, about the founder and stars of the Barnum & Bailey Circus.

It is ideal for a Lenten study of the Christian themes of hope, redemption and new life. The five-week course offers discussion points, biblical reflections and prayers based on short excerpts from the film.

UPDATE: As there hasn’t been enough interest in an evening Lent group, just the one Wednesday afternoon group will be running. If you require a lift to Crowell, so that you can attend, please let us know.

Please contact either:The Rev’d Jacky 07769 825 305 or email [email protected]

Margaret Poole 01844 281042 or email [email protected]

PLEASE NOTE: The film will be shown in its entirety on Sunday 1st March at St Peter and St Paul’s in Aston Rowant at 2.30pm.Everyone is welcome, even if you are not going to come to the Lent Course, just bring your own popcorn.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER*“Rise! Take your mat and walk”

Women, men and children of all ages are called to join the day of prayer that takes place all around the world on Friday 6th March 2020.

World Day of prayer is a women led, global, ecumenical movement and the service this year has been prepared by Christian women in Zimbabwe. They encourage us all to reflect on the difficulties and unrest that have plagued their country over many years. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. They encourage us to ‘Rise, take your mat and walk’ with them as they continue their, often turbulent, journey towards full reconciliation.

World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. The preparation for the day is vast. An international committee is based in New York and there are national committees in each participating country. Regional conferences meet to consider the service and then local groups make their plans. Finally, at a church near you on Friday 6th March 2020, people will gather to celebrate the service prepared by the women of Zimbabwe.

The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world…. through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas before finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later.

Everyone is welcome so please come and join us

on Friday 6th March at St Andrews Church, Church Road at 10.30am and again at 7.30pm.

and please stay afterwards for refreshments and a chat; we look forward to seeing you.

Within this service we are asked to commit to supporting our community with actions of love, peace and reconciliation. Then on Friday 20th March there will be a World Day of Prayer coffee morning between 10.30am-12noon at St Andrews church when we invite you to drop in and spend time with us in prayer and reflection as we “Revisit our commitments”.

This service focuses on the people who have been unable to have children of their own or who have lost their own children. For those who have adopted children. For those who have lost their own mother’s or have had difficult maternal relationships

to overcome.

A gentle service that contains hymns, prayer, readings and reflection followed by a time of lamentation during which music is played. The stones given at the beginning of the service to hold are taken to the altar, at this time, and placed into a basket at the foot of the cross. A symbol of handing over any unhappy burdens to the Lord.

Following an affirmation of faith, the service ends with a hymn and a blessing.

Do come and join us for this service at The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Crowell

Just a note about this service:

It will a Book of Common Prayer (BCP) service. Booklets will be available to make following the service as easy as possible, as I know trying to follow it from the tiny BCP books can be difficult, the writing is tiny and it’s not obvious which bits we are going to skip!

It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible. It is a blessing that our Parish has this diversity of services and it is something we should cherish and actively support.  During the service there will musical treats to enjoy (I'm saying no more so as not to spoil the surprise!) and there will be refreshments after the service.

Do come and enjoy this service!

**********

Admission free Retiring collection to assist with expensesOur first concert in the 2020 series will feature English and European Renaissance viol consort music and songs from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Regular attenders will know that this constitutes a change of programme. We are fortunate to be in a position to present this style of music for the first time – the closest we will have come to the period from which our church building dates!

The full programme will include music by the illustrious English composers Byrd, Dowland and Jenkins; also by Claudin de Sermisy. Amongst the performers will be Ludmila Podgaiskaia, Benedict King, Ryonfa Lee and Jackie Huntingford, all playing viols of different sizes – treble, tenor and bass, and quite possibly singing too as would have been totally normal in earlier times, when many households possessed a chest of viols (as many of ours might have a piano) and would have made music together for their own entertainment and pleasure. Viols, the predecessors of the violin family, possess their own beautiful and characteristic sound which is becoming increasingly familiar in today’s concert halls, though it may be said quite fairly that they lend themselves more persuasively to the acoustics of a church or family home. Jackie Huntingford, an expert in this field, known to those who attend Aston Rowant services where she plays the organ from time to time, will give a brief introduction to the viol family before the performances.

This will be an hour of intimate and highly enjoyable music making. All are welcome and there are no charges for admission; a collection will be taken to assist with expenses.

HOLY WEEKHoly week will be a little different this year.

On Sunday 5th April there will be two 10am Palm Sunday services, one at St Andrews and the service at Aston Rowant will be very family orientated with breakfast and the usual appearance of Max and Molly while palm crosses will be made.

(For the 8 O'clock congregation at St Andrew's, there will be palm crosses, but things will be more low-key).

On the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week there are opportunities to be with Jesus in those days leading up to the Last Supper.  At 7pm each evening there will be a Holy Communion rotating round our different churches. Each service will be short and simple, but it will include a short reflection on the Gospel reading of the day.  This will help us make the journey with Jesus from the adoration of the crowd on Palm Sunday to the cries of "crucify him" on Good Friday.

By inviting you to these evening Holy Communion services we have lost the Stations of the Cross service. The Stations will be up in St Andrew's from the evening of Palm Sunday onwards.  There will be a booklet available so that for you can come into the church at any time and make your own prayer journey around the Stations, with Jesus to Golgotha.

On Maundy Thursday there will be a United parish service of Holy Communion with foot washing at 7pm at St Andrew's. If you feel shy about exposing your feet in public (and some of us do!) there will also be hand washing available. These acts emphasise the servant nature of Christ our Lord and of our own calling as Christians. This service will end with the dramatic stripping of the church of all crosses and candles.  There will then be a Watch, a time of silent reflection, while trying not to fall asleep as the disciples did in the Garden of Gethsemane.  I haven't decided how long the Watch will be yet, but however long it will be, you only need stay for as long as is right for you, be it 5 minutes or the whole time.

Good Friday services will be as usual.  Joan will lead a reflection at Sydenham at 10am and I will lead the noon -3pm service at St Andrew's.

The other change to look out for is the Easter Vigil on Easter Eve. The time has changed to 11pm. This is to increase the drama and symbolism of the service: moving from the dark outside into the light of the Church.

On Easter Sunday there will be morning services across the Parish. I would particularly invite you to consider coming to the Stations of the Resurrection service at Crowell at 4pm - a lovely way to finish our Easter celebrations.

Please do consider all these services as invitations and opportunities to help deepen your experience of Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Some of you have your own practices and devotions during this week. If you can make any of these services in any of our churches, we will be delighted to welcome you.

The St. Andrew's Educational Charity was formed under a Scheme prepared by the Charity

Commissioners and its income is derived from the interest of the invested monies arising

from the sale of the Chinnor Old Church of England Primary School.

The Scheme allows the Trustees to apply part of the income in providing such special

benefits of any kind not normally provided by the local education authority for any maintained

school attended by children and young persons under the age of 25 years who are resident

in the Parishes of Chinnor (including Emmington, Henton, Wainhill and Chinnor Hill) or

Sydenham, and a further part in promoting the education (including social and physical

training) of children and young persons under the age of 25 years who are resident in the

area of the Parishes of Chinnor or Sydenham in one or more of the following ways:

(a) in awarding to such persons’ scholarships, exhibitions, bursaries, maintenance

allowances or grants tenable at any school, college of education, university or any

other institution of education approved by the Trustees.

(b) in providing financial assistance, outfits, clothing, tools, instruments, or books to assist

such persons to pursue their education (including the study of music and other arts), to

undertake travel in thereof, or to prepare for or enter a profession or trade, occupation

or service on leaving school, university or other educational establishment.

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL:

VACANCY: FOUNDATION GOVERNOR

As a Church school, St Andrew’s CoE Primary School, has two Foundation Governors sitting on their Full Governing Board along with the current incumbent Rector as ex-officio Governor.  Currently Lauretta Milligan and Suzanne Hollick are Foundation Governors.  Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances Suzanne will not renew her role when it runs out in May 2020. A big thank you to Suzanne for her vital role as Foundation Governor over the past years.  We would like to invite you to consider whether you could serve God in this way. The term of office is for four years from the date of appointment.

The Governors, of a school, work as a team in close co-operation with the headteacher and all the staff.  Foundation Governors share the responsibilities of all Governors:

·                     Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

·                     Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and

·                     Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

In addition to this, foundation governors are appointed specifically to ensure:

·                     that the religious character of the school is preserved

·                     that the school is conducted in accordance with its trust deed

The school would benefit from people with skills and experience which will give breadth and strength to the Governing Body for the benefit of the School. Training and guidance will be given to enable you to carry out the role.  Your passion for helping to move the school forward, while maintaining its Christian distinctiveness and church school ethos and upholding and developing dynamic links between the local church and the community, will be vital.

In terms of the time commitment required, there are 12 Governor meetings per year, always in the evenings. Plus, the Governors each have a school subject to provide governor support for - which generally involves meeting 3 times per year with the lead teacher to offer advice and challenge on how best to develop the subject.

If you are interested in taking on this very rewarding role, then please talk to the Rev’d Jacky Barr or Lauretta Milligan.

Our Work with the SchoolsEach week the Open the Book team visit both Aston Rowant and St Andrew’s primary schools to lead their collective worship (that’s an assembly in old money!).

The schools are also visited by the REinspired team up to twice a term. In the photograph below you can see the year 6 children from St Andrew’s engaging with the REinspired session on the Christian response to death. This is how it was described in the school newsletter:

Year 6 took part in a RE inspired session discussing difficult personal responses to death and the process of grief. They considered the Christian perspective on life and death. The children also thought about how life on earth can be seen as only part of a journey.

Our cherished close links with the schools also mean that the Rev’d Jacky and the Rev’d Des are also invited to take part in other activities. In this photograph year 6 are experiencing a Holy Communion service in school, with Rev’d Jacky explaining the service as it happened. Here is how this was described in the school newsletter:

Reverend Jacky led a Eucharist in Manser Hall this term. It is a Christian service

commemorating the Last Supper, in which bread and wine are consecrated and

consumed. The children thoroughly

enjoyed the service.

Chinnor Passion Play

In 2017 Chinnor embarked on a Passion Play at which approx. 700 people heard and saw the Gospel over 2 performances. Mill Lane School and St Andrew’s School were both involved and dancers from the youth of Chinnor Community Church opened the play. Actors, backstage crew, musicians and many more worked together to ensure that the play was performed to a high standard. We are, under the Lord’s direction planning to do this again this year on 25th April 2020. I am writing to you as we need help. The following are areas where your people’s help would be valued and most needed.

1. Prayer Support – to pray for all the planning, people involved, and most importantly that those who ‘see’ and ‘hear’ the Gospel will respond positively to it.

2. People Support – both in attendance and participation. People who will act (no experience required, but a desire to be involved), musicians, back-stage crew and much more. We are looking for those who want to be part of this remarkable event to contact us.

3. Financial Support – It goes without saying that it costs to put on such an event and details can be found about financial support on the web site.

4. Publicity – Could we please ask if you would make this known via your website and/or face-book pages.

We would like as many people as possible to be involved, to get the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ out to Chinnor. Photographs are attached and a leaflet about the next one. If you need more’ of anything’ please do let me know.

******************************************CHINNOR CHRISTIAN AID

The Pre-Pancake Party held at the Pavilion in Chinnor on the 18th February was a great success - delicious pancakes, crafts and fun for the children and a buzzing atmosphere.

A profit of £332 was made for the continued vital work of Christian Aid.

Thank you to all who helped on the day and to everyone who supported us.

Look out for future events - Christian Aid Week this year is 12th May - 18th May.CHILDREN’S SOCIETY

In the late nineteenth century, Edward Rudolf, a young Sunday school teacher and civil servant in South London, saw first-hand the brutal effects of poverty on the lives of children.

When two young boys failed to turn up for his Sunday school, he went to look for them and was shocked to find them begging for food on the streets. Their father had died, leaving their mother struggling to bring up seven children under the age of 11. Theirs was not an isolated experience and Rudolf was moved to act. Rudolf’s vision was to give poor, homeless children a loving and secure family environment and to grow up as part of their local community. To do this he set up small cottage homes, each with around 10 children aged 5-14, with a master and matron to act as parents. We have continued to fight through campaigning, commitment and care, to give every child the greatest possible chance in life and to make sure that no child feels alone. Right now, in Britain, there are children and young people who feel scared, unloved and unable to cope. The Children’s Society works with these young people, step by step, for as long as it takes. We listen. We support. We act. The United Parish of Chinnor, Sydenham, Aston Rowant and Crowell would like to thank all who supported the various collections, donations, profit from the sale of Christmas cards and Christingle events in raising funds for the Children’s Society.  I am pleased to report that a grand total of £1,464 will be forwarded to the Children’s Society for the valuable work they continue to do for children throughout the UK.  Barbara Bigland - Children’s Society Representative

Parish Office Notice  As a United parish we are very blessed to have an office administrator (not all parishes do), so we do need to cherish what we have and look after Tricia!

The usual opening times of the office (as stated on the back page of the magazine) Tuesday 1.30 – 3.30pm; Wednesday 1.30 -3.30pm; Thursday 1.30- 3.30pm

However, we have no cover for Tricia, so when she needs to take time off the office is effectively closed or the opening times may change. When this happens, we will try to get a note into the Parish magazine but at the very least a note will be on the door of St Andrew's.

If you need something urgently from the office, it may be best to phone or email ahead to make sure that the office is open, to save a wasted journey.

ST ANDREW’S CHURCH FLOWER AND CRAFTS

FESTIVAL WITH AFTERNOON CREAM TEA:

LIFE’S FOOSTEPS: SATURDAY 6 & SUNDAY 7 JUNE 2020The St Andrew’s Church Flower Guild is hosting a flower festival with the theme of “Life’s Footsteps” on Saturday 6 June and Sunday 7 June 2020. This is being held in conjunction with the Chinnor Open Gardens. The event will again be expanded by showcasing displays of local art and crafts alongside the gardens.

The church will be decorated with flowers depicting various Life’s Footsteps – footsteps depicting journeys through one’s Life – from thought provoking to the funny side of life. In addition, the church will be supporting the Chinnor Open Gardens initiative and inviting several artists and crafters to share their skills during the flower festival in the church. If you are interested in participating in this festival as a flower arranger or an artist and crafter please contact Lauretta Milligan (e-mail: [email protected]).

There will also be a produce stall selling jams, crafts, etc and a plant stall – any donations towards the produce stall will be gratefully received closer to the date of the festival. Cream teas will be sold on both afternoons of the festival. This year’s festival will again host tours of the bell tower on both days from 2pm-4pm. For a small donation, visitors can have a go at ringing the bells and have a look into the ringing chamber plus a talk about the history of the bells and how the bells are rung.

Donations at the door will be gratefully received. The funds raised during this Flower and Crafts Festival will go towards the future restoration work of St Andrew’s Church. St Andrew’s Church is in the heart of Chinnor and beloved by locals and visitors alike. The building is used by the community, for the community.
