Dear Friends, In this column this year, we are going to focus on what it means to be a member of or attached to a church. Last month, we looked at the fact that we are to be peacemakers in or-der to reflect the love of Christ. The Book of Order, which defines our day to day activities as a Presbyterian congrega-tion, states that another aspect of being a faithful member means that we are to be “participating in the governing responsibilities of the church.”

Each active member is blessed to participate in the leadership of the church. This in-volves being a member of committees which are responsible for all of the programs of the church. There are six committees. Administrative Committee oversees the finances and the staff compensation packages. Christian Education oversees the education moments of the church from Sunday School to Youth Group to Young Adults. Fellowship oversees the kitchen and our meal ministry. Membership Support is responsible for evangelism and stewardship. Witness and Mission coordinates all of our mission efforts outside of the church. The Worship Committee oversees all of the worship opportunities in our church life which includes the music.

Everyone is welcome to join a committee in order to assist in the running of church. You can make an impact by sharing your ideas and expertise. If you want to share in this ex-citing way of serving, you can talk this over with me at any time.

In addition to this, an active member has the ability to speak in congregational meet-ings as well as vote. Active members can also hold office such as being an elder or a deacon. Join by meeting with Session. The next Session meeting will be June 3, at 7:00 p.m.

Please remember that we are the faithful ones. And so as members and attenders of the Church, when we live out the love of Christ, we show others that we are truly grounded in grace, that we live in love, and are growing for God. In Christ’s Love,

Youth Group Our project continues to be to collect gen-

tly worn clothing to take to Big Creek for the clothing bank there. We are also collecting jeans, long sleeved button down shirts, and pantyhose for Harvest Hoedown.

Dessert Theatre The Youth will host their Dessert Theatre

on June 9, at 6:00 p.m., in the Legacy Hall. Come and have a great time with great enter-tainment and lots of delicious desserts. Tick-ets can be purchased from any Youth, or at the door. The cost is: adults and children age 6 and older—$3.50, children under 6—$1.50, and infants are free.

Pres- byterian Women

The Presbyterian Women will not meet until September. Watch your bulletins in August for information.

Holly Place The Presbyterian Women continue to col-

lect: boxes of tissues, toilet paper, paper towels, adult Depends (or other brands) size L or XL, NO diapers, and laundry detergent. Put donated items in the tub marked Holly Place, located under the counter in the par-lor. Thank you for your continued support in this PW mission.

Blessing Bags Please pick up a blessing bag from the

parlor sometime over the next few weeks. Take it home, and when you receive a bless-ing from God, put some money in it. We will collect filled bags in September.

Lobster Fest Our 7th annual lobster fest will be held on

Saturday, June 8, from 5:30—7:30 p.m. It

includes a full meal of 1 1/2-2 lb. lobster, salad, roll, vegetable, potatoes, homemade desserts, and choice of hot and cold drinks. Tickets are $35 per person.

For children and those who do not enjoy lobster, baked ham will be available. Those tickets are $20 per person.

Cooked lobsters to go are $25 per lobster. Tickets can be purchased at the church

office, or by calling 301-223-8887 or 301-992-2222. Tickets must be purchased before June 5.

Confirmation Class The Confirmation Class will join the

church at the Session meeting of June 3. There will be a covered dish supper preceding the Session meeting/Confirmation class join-ing, at 6:00 p.m. in the Legacy Hall. They will be publicly received in worship on June 9, at the 11:00 a.m. service.

Congratulations Congratulations to Gabby Johnson, who

is the recipient of the 2019 Outstanding Young Church Woman Award. She has been a blessing to us at St. Andrew.

Supper Club Our monthly Supper Club will meet at

Western Sizzlin on Tuesday, June 25, 5:30 p.m. Come and join us for a great meal and fellowship with your church family. There is a sign-up sheet in the parlor if you plan on attending.

Movie Night We will be having a movie night at St. An-

drew on Friday, May 31, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The movie showing will be “Indivisible”. There will be pizza, popcorn, candy, and drinks. Please sign up if you will be coming.

unique way to show Pastor Mark and Annette appreciation for their servant hearts and ministry. This year, there will be several questions about both of them in each newsletter. Book Club The evening book club will meet on

Tuesday, June 4, 7:00 p.m., in the confer-ence room. We will be discussing The Mas-ter of Disguise, by Antonio Mendez. The evening book club will take a break for the summer, and will meet back on September 3. We will be discussing Jefferson’s Daughter, by Stephanie Dray. Pick up a copy and enjoy this book during the sum-mer. Join us for great discussion in Sep-tember.

The date for the daytime book club is TBA, 1:30 p.m., at Panera Bread. We will be discussing The Discovery, by Dan Walsh.

Suns Baseball Night Come join your church family for a

night at the Hagerstown Suns on August 23. The game is a 7:05 p.m. game with doors opening an hour ahead of the game. This year we have upgraded our seating. We are now sitting in the grandstand—covered and with backs to our seats. Eve-ryone will receive a voucher for a hot dog, chips, and a drink of their choice. The evening will end with a fireworks display. All of this for only $17! There will be pay-ment envelopes in the parlor. You can put your payment in the envelope. If writing a check, make it out to St. Andrew. Please sign up on the sheet if you plan on attend-ing. This has always been a fun tradition of attending a Suns game together as a church family before the summer ends. Hope you can join us, and feel free to invite a friend. Sunday School Snippets Toddler Class: The students have been learning about Easter, and how Jesus is alive! Pre-K Class: Congratulations to Josiah Kesler, and Elsie Majeski for memorizing their Bi-ble verse, “Serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13. K/1st Grade Class: Congratulations to Colton McKinley, Maggie Wise, and Norah Wise for memorizing their Bible verse, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34. The children have been learning how families can help us know all about Jesus. 2nd/3rd Grade Class: Congratulations to Abby Boppe, Natalie Farioli, Brody Hemphill, Kayleigh Rothove, and Lauren Scumpieru who are wonderful class participators and offer so much to each lesson. Following Easter Sunday, the students have been learning Scripture dealing with life lessons—being honest, forgiving others, and controlling jealousy. The class is beginning to study Joseph, the son of Jacob. The students will learn more about how Joseph listened to God, and how he became an important and responsible leader. 4th/5th Grade Class: For the month of May, the students discussed the following themes: do what you can do to make peace with others; be careful when you feel jealous of others; be faithful to God in all you do; and forgive those who hurt you. 6th-8th Grade Class: The class has been talking about communion and what it means—the bread is the body of Christ given for us, and the wine is the blood that Jesus shed on our behalf for the forgiveness of our sins. They have been discussing failure, and how God helps us through these difficult times. 9th-12th Grade Class: The class is digging deeper into the stories of the Old Testament.

Come Join Sunday School We never take a vacation from growing in our faith and getting closer to God! We have

Sunday School 52 weeks of the year. If you have not had the chance to join a class, sum-mer would be a great time to jump in and grow deeper in your faith each Sunday at Sun-day School. We are just beginning a brand new Summer curriculum. It’s the perfect time to come and join us. There are classes for all ages, beginning at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday.

We have two adult classes. Pastor Mark and Hank Hemphill teach the Seeker’s Class, an in depth Bible Study. They are currently studying I Samuel. This class meets in the Legacy Hall. Our other Sunday School class, the Voyagers, meets in the conference room. This is an interactive class that chooses a book to read and study. The books are provided by the church. Currently they are studying The Battle Plan for Prayer. The class allows for a time of sharing prayer concerns, followed up by prayer.

All children from Pre-K to 5th Grade meet in the sanctuary at 9:45 a.m. At that time, we have a brief Sunday School Opening. Each week we take up an offering that goes to support our two Sunday School sponsored children from Compassion International. Sun-day School also supports the work of Samaritan’s Purse, a ministry of Franklin Graham that helps in the suffering around the world. Part of the offering is also used for the min-istry of the church and community. At 10:00, all children are dismissed to their classes. Parents, please note that if you have a child in grade three or younger, please pick them up from their classroom at 10:45. Thank you. All these classes are located downstairs.

The 6th-8th grade and teen classes start at 9:45 a.m. and end at 10:45 a.m. The 6th-8th grade class is located upstairs, in the room just before entering Friendship Hall. The teen class is located downstairs in the new area, on the right side.

Summertime Activities for Kids

Miss Annette will be starting her Kids of the Kingdom Summertime Fun activities. She will have a summertime packet filled with all kinds of Christian activities for kids of all ag-es. These can be worked on throughout the summer. Upon completion, a $5 gift card of your choice will be awarded.

We will also be starting our Summertime Reading Program. Make sure you see Miss Annette if you plan on joining the Reading Club. She will give you a reading log and in-structions for the program. A special prize is awarded upon completion of the reading pro-gram.

Teacher Appreciation Please join us on Sunday, June 9, from 9:30—10:45 a.m. for a celebration of all of our

teachers. We are blessed with the most amazing teaching staff at St. Andrew. We want to set aside this day and celebrate and give thanks to all who give of their time and talents teaching students of all ages. The Fellowship Committee will be serving breakfast for this special day. Please sign up in the parlor by TODAY so we can adequately plan for this special event. The admission to the breakfast is a note of thanks to your teacher. Index cards will be placed in the parlor for you to pick up and write your note of thanks. There will also be cards available in the Sunday School classes. Please pick up a card, fill it out, and bring it with you to the breakfast. Thank you so much. Parish Nurse Nook This article is dedicated to all of the men in our congregation. Happy Men’s Health

month! Did you know that on average, men are dying at an earlier age than women in the Unit-

ed States, with an approximate gap of five years? The leading causes of death in men in the United States include heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, diabetes, homicide, and pneumonia. Men tend to lead less healthy lifestyles, and engage in more risky behav-ior. They also tend to work in more dangerous occupations, and have less healthcare cov-erage. Finally, men are less likely to seek out preventative care or visit a health care pro-fessional than women. Although these trends point towards an earlier death for men than women, there are things you can do to decrease your risk of some early causes of death and improve your overall health.

Heart disease: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men in the United States. Some signs and symptoms of a heart problem that would require a doctor’s attention in-clude: fatigue, dizziness, and chest pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately!

Prostate cancer awareness: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men, and is most common in men age 65 or older. Although prostate cancer is a serious condition, most men diagnosed with the disease do not die from it. The exact cause of prostate cancer has not been identified, so it is unclear whether the disease can be effectively prevented. However, living a healthy lifestyle and taking control of preventa-ble risk factors such as smoking, weight, and diet, can help to lower your risk of develop-ing prostate cancer in the future. There are two common initial tests that your doctor may perform: Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and/or Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), starting at age 50. Men should talk to their doctor about the advantages and disad-vantages of the prostate cancer screening tests.

Unintentional injuries: Unintentional injuries are simply accidents. Specifically look-ing at men, they are the number three cause of death in the United States and number four overall. Death rates peak around 18-22 years of age, a secondary peak for adults in their 40s, and then rise continually with age among adults 70 years of age and over. These peaks correlate with unsafe driving, risky behavior at work, and falls among our three groups, respectively. Unintentional injuries include those from falls, fires, drowning, poisonings, motor vehicle crashes, sports, recreational activities, and heat related illness. In the summer, keep your skin covered, drink water, and take frequent breaks. Make sure you keep grills away from the house and anything that could catch on fire. Make sure lad-ders are stable before climbing. Use a spotter if one is available. When using tools, wear proper eye gear, use proper hand placement, and always cut away from you.

Our Parish Nurse, Kelly Llewellyn, has office hours at the church each Sunday morning from 9:45-10:45 a.m., in the room across from the conference room. If you have a ques-tion or concern, stop by and see her. Kelly does a blood pressure check at each monthly coffee hour. If you would like to have yours checked before the next coffee hour, stop by her office and she will gladly check it for you.

Our quarterly Parish Nurse Event, Stop the Bleed, will be held on Sunday, June 2, after the 11:00 service. Details have been in May’s newsletter, and in the bulletins. If you are planning on attending this event, you must register by TODAY.

HARC Hike The HARC Hike will be held on June 8,

2019. Information and a sign-up sheet can be found in the parlor.

Paint Party We had so much fun at our Spring Paint

Party that we will be doing another one on July 14, after church. There are two differ-ent plaques to choose from. Samples are in the parlor. Please sign up by June 30. When signing up, please indicate which plaque you would like to do. The cost is $20, and you can pay that day. We will be providing a light lunch for all those attend-ing. This is a fun event for all ages.

Vacation Bible School Needed

We are still in need of helpers in all grade levels. Please see the sign-up sheet in the parlor, and sign up where you would like to help.

Prayer Calendars There are VBS Prayer Calendars in the

parlor. Help yourself to one and keep VBS in your prayers.

Important Dates for VBS Sunday, June 9 The t-shirts are ready. Please pick up

your t-shirt in the hallway. If you do not have one, please put your name on the pa-per provided. Make sure to wear your t-shirt the first day of VBS!

Saturday, June 15 We are having our Set-Up Party on Sat-

urday this year instead of Sunday, due to Father’s Day. Please come to the church at 4:00 p.m., and meet in the Legacy Hall. We will have a brief meeting and then get our assignments. We will break for dinner at 5:30. The Youth Group will be hosting

some fun outside games after dinner. Hope you can come. There will be jobs for all ag-es—moving furniture, setting up the sanc-tuary, getting classrooms together, decorat-ing the church, finishing up crafts, making snacks, setting up the registration table, etc.

Sunday, June 16 All staff for VBS will be dedicated at

both services. Please wear your VBS shirt.

Monday-Friday, June 17-21 Vacation Bible School week will run

from 6:00—8:00 p.m. each evening. We have classes for all ages, from tots to adults. Adults do not have to register. Pastor Mark will be teaching the same les-sons that the children are learning each night. The adult class will be in the Legacy Hall. VBS is a family event. Please come and enjoy this incredible week with your family. Please invite all your friends.

You Are Invited A celebration of the 60th wedding anni-

versary of Don and Pat Newbraugh will be held on June 9, at 12:30 p.m., in the Lega-cy Hall. Everyone is invited. Lunch will be provided. Please, no gifts. Please sign up on the sheet in the parlor by June 1 if you will be coming.

They Call Me Dad, by Ken Canfield provides powerful insights and prac-tical applications to strengthen a fa-ther’s relationship with his children.

Witness & Mission We collected $1332.11 for the One Great

Hour of Sharing ministry. Thank you to all who donated.

When you are having yard sales this summer, remember to save long sleeved, button down shirts and pantyhose for our scarecrows.

Membership and Stewardship Support

Summertime begins with Memorial Day and lasts through Labor Day. Kids don’t have school. Families take vacations. Even TV shows go on hiatus. It seems like everyone and everything takes a break from routines over the summer, except for the ministry at St. Andrew. Our weekly wor-ship services and Sunday School classes continue throughout the summer. Our staff follows their regular schedules. Coffee hours, Shepherd’s Table, and the food bank still happen during summer. We do not slow down over summer. We actually pick up some activities that can only be done in summer: VBS, Big Creek mission trip, Creation Fest, and our back-to-school picnic to name a few. We hope to see you at some of our summer activities.

Since St. Andrew’s ministry continues during summer, we depend on your finan-cial support even if you are not present. Salaries, utilities, and building and grounds expenses still need to be paid. Curriculum materials, coffee and kitchen items, and all paper goods (from bulletins to TP) are still purchased.

St. Andrew Meal Ministry The Deacons have a Meal Ministry in place, and are looking for volunteers to provide a

meal or meals to an individual or family after surgery, passing of a loved one, traumatic event, unfavorable medical diagnosis, or any other reason deemed necessary. We are look-ing for people to make meals, soups, or casseroles. The meals would be provided on spe-cific days requested by the individual or family. The soup could be frozen or canned, and the casseroles frozen and pulled out when needed, but we do have needs for hot meals to be delivered on specific days. If you would like to be part of this ministry, please fill out the form below to let the Deacons know how you can participate. If you are someone in need, or know of a St. Andrew member or regular attendee who will need a meal in the fu-ture, please contact your Deacon, the Deacon Moderator, Jen Metz, or Pastor Mark. Jeffrey Andrews Jeffrey will graduate from Washington County Technical High School. Jeffrey was a

member of the National Technical Honors Society. He received, from the State of Mary-land, a USA silver medal for a GPA of 3.7 or higher. He received an award for the excep-tional amount of Student Service Learning Hours he put in while in high school. Jeffrey was also awarded for his excellence in Career Tech. Congratulations, Jeffrey, for all your accomplishments! He will be attending Hagerstown Community College this fall. Jeffrey would like to pursue a degree in Industrial Engineering. This summer, he will be working as an intern as a local engineering firm, as well as going on the mission trip to Big Creek, KY.

What a joy is has been seeing Jeffrey grow up in the church. He has always been ac-tively involved in Sunday School, Youth Group, Vacation Bible School, and mission trips. Jeffrey, God has great plans for you! May God bless you and guide you as you embark on your next chapter in your life.

Nathan Armstrong Nathan will graduate from Washington County Technical High School, and was a mem-

ber of the National Technical Honor Society. His summer plans are to work full time. He is still deciding what career he would like to pursue. Congratulations to Nathan for achieving his Eagle Scout award. For his Eagle Scout project, Nathan built the 9 Square court and the Gaga pit. These games, located on the side of the church, have been en-joyed by people of all ages. Thank you so much, Nathan, for building these for the enjoy-ment of so many people! Nathan has been involved with Sunday School, Youth Group, Bi-ble Study, VBS, and mission trips. We are so proud of you and all your accomplishments. May the Lord guide and direct you in this new chapter of your life!

Jasin Coyle Jasin will graduate from Williamsport High School this spring. He will be attending

Hagerstown Community College this fall. His future plans are to become a dental hygien-ist. This summer, Jasin will continue working at Burger King. In his spare time, Jasin enjoys fishing.

Jasin has been a member of the church since he was a baby. What a joy it has been watching Jasin grow up from being a little boy once upon a time to a young man working and attending college this fall to pursue his dream. Jasin, you are in our thoughts and prayers as you embark on this next exciting step in your life.

Sarah Herbert Sarah will graduate from Williamsport High School and is #1 in her class! Wow! What

an achievement. She will be attending West Virginia University in the fall, and will be in the honors program. Sarah plans to major in biomedical engineering/med school. This summer, Sarah plans on working and attending Odyssey Honors Adventure. Sarah was a starter on a championship volleyball team while at Williamsport High.

Sarah has been an active participant in our youth group for the past several years, and was the youth group secretary. She enjoyed going to Creation every summer with the youth group. For Sarah, some of the highlights of youth group were the retreats and lock-ins. Sarah, thank you so much for being such a great role model and a blessing for our younger girls at youth group. You are in our thoughts and prayers as you begin the next chapter in your life at WVU.

Gabby Johnson Gabby will graduate from Smithsburg High School, and will be attending Liberty Uni-

versity in the fall. Gabby plans on getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Biopsychology. This summer, Gabby will be working and traveling before going to Liberty in the fall. Gabby was recently awarded the Young Christian Woman Award at the Church Women United Program on May 3. This award goes to a young woman who has led an outstanding life living out their Christian faith in all areas. This is quite an honor, and we are so proud of you, Gabby! She is also an honoree in the Student Service Learning Program. Gabby has also achieved the Academic Achievement award.

Gabby has been attending St. Andrew ever since she was a little girl. She has been ac-tively involved with Sunday School, Youth Group, Bible School, and mission trips. She is also our #1 babysitter for all programs of the church when there is a need for a sitter. We are so proud of you, Gabby, for all your achievements. May God continue to guide and di-rect your future plans!

Derek Metz Derek graduated from Shepherd University on May 11. His major was Political Science.

Derek plans to continue working this summer. This fall, he would like to begin working on obtaining a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education.

Derek started attending St. Andrew Church when he was in the Pre-K class where his mom, Jennifer, began her first year of teaching at St. Andrew. Derek went through all the Sunday School classes here at St. Andrew. (His mom is still with the Pre-K class. Thank you, Miss Jen.) Not only was Derek involved in Sunday School, he was also involved with youth group and Bible School. It has been such a joy watching Derek grow up in the church. May the Lord continue to bless you as you pursue your dream of becoming a sec-ondary teacher!
