Dear Friend:As you know, for the last 22 years, we’ve committed significant effort toward the redevelopment of an economically distressed and neglected community in South Memphis, in association with our congregation at St. Andrew AME Church and our community development corporation, The Works, Inc. Without a doubt, the pragmatic footprint of the St. Andrew Enterprise has positively changed the heartbeat of South Memphis.

With broad-based support, we’ve been able to celebrate some major successes, and we have shared in the lives of thousands of people—of babies being born healthy, of children learning at a high level, of families coming out of substandard circumstances into new housing, of seniors staying and celebrating their revitalized community.

It’s an Enterprise with the sole purpose to rebuild, restore and renew both our community and Memphis. At its heart are:

• Multifaceted community services and comprehensive programming for children, youth and families• Nationally-recognized partnerships that provide support for at-risk students • More than 110 new and affordable housing units • An “outperforming” public school for grades K-5, one of the first four charter schools in the state • Pre-kindergarten classrooms seamlessly linking our 3-Star, nationally accredited childcare center with our progressive elementary school • Newly constructed community-focused space for our charter school - housing the upper grades, instrumental music and dance practice rooms, additional administrative space and its cafeteria/assembly area

A generous benefactor has offered to supplement our investment with a gift of $1,000,000 to help “take the limits off ” of our ministry, by retiring the debt related to these efforts. But we must first raise an additional $500,000 to receive this generous investment.

All gifts raised will be restricted to go directly to pay for the investments we have made in our children through the school—not to operate any current programming or church operations.

We are now asking YOU to answer the call by honoring our work in South Memphis with a one-time commitment, to help us earn this once-in-a-lifetime challenge grant. As you can see, your gift will be matched two dollars for every dollar given and will help us earn $1,000,000 in return. We are so thankful to God for our assignment to Memphis, and for the many partners and friends we have made being here with you. Kenneth and Marilynn Robinson

A Community of Promise & PotentialIn 1991, Rev. Kenneth S. Robinson, M.D. and Rev. Marilynn S. Robinson, M.P.H. accepted the appointment to serve St. Andrew AME Church as the church’s new clergy leadership. They brought unique backgrounds and experiences as two professionals with multi-faceted careers in medicine, public health administration and in ministry.

Their approach was Biblical and bold: “We will address the whole individual and the whole community holistically, with the church as a catalyst.”

Indeed, the seeds of the St. Andrew Enterprise were sown with the arrival of The Robinsons, who now share an unusual joint appointment as St. Andrew’s Pastors. They knew that to bring about true transformation, the church was called to “minister to Memphis—spirit, soul and body.”

To that end, the Church has served as the area’s “social entrepreneur and seed funder/incubator,” providing start-up leadership, capital and administrative support to a variety of church-based programs and new not-for-profit organizations that now comprise the St. Andrew Enterprise.

Today in St. Andrew’s neighborhood, there is a comprehensive set of resources available to all ages. These programs and organizations share a common foundation of leadership, management, administration and a shared culture of core values. Together, the St. Andrew Enterprise is a powerful engine for social change in South Memphis and throughout Memphis.

Dr. Robinson and Rev. Marilynn have inspired innovative, effective approaches to social transformation–secular and faith-based. They have been valuable partners in building a better Memphis.

The legacyThey were called to be here. Memphis wasn’t their first choice. But when they came, they found something that spoke to them. Here was a community of great and undeniable need—but even greater promise and potential. They were home.

Kenneth and Marilynn Robinson believed wholeheartedly that St. Andrew AME could be a powerful catalyst, driver and fiscal agent for community transformation in its local neighborhood and throughout the city. Their approach wasn’t traditional. Some called it innovative. They called it the right thing to do.

During the past 22 years, the Robinsons have made place-based investments in people and in the resources they saw as vital for this community—a good school in which to learn, trustworthy childcare, access to healthy habits and food and a community center for gathering and connecting.


Nataline Sherry Purdy, M.A.A 14-year member of St. Andrew, Nataline has been progressively employed by the Enterprise as ERCC Office Assistant, CLC Aftercare Teacher and Summer

Camp Coordinator. She obtained home ownership

through The Works, Inc. Inspired at the Enterprise, this single mother of three now college-educated daughters completed her own B.A. in Psychology and M.A. in Education with a specialization in Child Development. She now serves as Executive Assistant at the church and as a part-time Mental Health Therapist.

Harvey Burks As a child in South Memphis, Harvey participated in St. Andrew’s after-school enrichment program and basketball team. He was a frequent recipient of the church’s Labor Day

Shoe Ministry. He joined the church that encouraged

him, becoming employed as a part-time Assistant Property Manager. Ultimately, he became a Co-Teacher at COSLA. With the skills and knowledge acquired over the years in The Enterprise, this devoted husband and father of three sons organized and coaches a community football and basketball team for inner city youth.

We Believe:1. Individuals and families need proactive, easy access to an integrated set of resources that meet the full range of their needs and development potential.

2. The full range of resources and services must be embedded within local neighborhoods for community transformation that rebuilds physical infrastructure, helps change defeating attitudes and beliefs and connects people to education, cultural and employment opportunities in the region.

3. A church of any size and any stage of development can leverage its members’ time, talent and treasure to serve as catalysts for community transformation.

4. A church can be an appropriate organizational structure for bringing public and private funding and forging collaborative partnerships for non‐religious social programs and community transformation.

Reverend Kenneth S. Robinson

A native of Nashville, The Reverend Kenneth S. Robinson, M.D., M.Div. earned his Bachelor’s degree cum laude and Medical Degree from Harvard University, as well as a Master of Divinity Degree from Vanderbilt. He has pursued a bi-professional synthesis of medicine and ministry; focused on the promotion of health in individuals, families and communities.

Dr. Robinson recently made history, completing a four-year tenure as the state’s first African-American Commissioner of Health. Overseeing 3,500 employees and a $548 million budget, his signature focus was on the epidemic of obesity, the burden of chronic disease, the impact

of infant mortality and the overarching racial and ethnic disparities incumbent in these matters. Prior to joining the Governor’s Cabinet, he practiced and taught Internal Medicine at Vanderbilt and served as an Assistant Dean at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

He is widely sought across the country for his expertise on policy and partnership development, particularly applicable to health promotion in the African-American and religious communities. Over Rev. Robinson’s 30-year pastoral career, he has administered more than $20 million in external resources for his congregations from national and local foundations and local, state and federal agencies. He’s received numerous national honors, including the prestigious Community Builder Award – presented annually to one individual in the nation by the national United Way of America – as well as being named as as one of the country’s Ten Community Health Leaders of the Year by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He serves as a Director or Trustee of several foundations, institutions and organizations and as the Public Health Policy Advisor to the Shelby County Mayor.

Reverend Marilynn S. Robinson

The Reverend Marilynn S. Robinson, M.P.H., emerged from her childhood in public housing in The Bronx, New York to receive her Bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Harvard-Radcliffe College and the Master of Public Health from Yale, where she was honored with the coveted E. Richard Weinermen Award as the graduate school’s most outstanding student.

She has had an exemplary career in Hospital Administration working with hospital associations, primary care practices and academic health centers. Following 10 years as a senior administrator at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, she came to Saint Francis

Healthcare, where she is currently Senior Vice President and responsible for marketing, governmental affairs and the hospital’s external communications. Her unique administrative gifts and cultural sensitivity are evident in her well-loved, managerial relationship with the employees of the two hospitals.

Having accepted her Call To Preach in 1991, Rev. Marilynn is an ordained Elder in the A.M.E. Church. She shares a rare joint appointment as Pastor with her husband, managing a host of congregational ministries, programs and administrative and staff functions, delivering compassionate pastoral counseling and offering ongoing guidance as the Founder and inspirational leader of the church’s phenomenal women’s fellowship.

Rev. Marilynn is an alumna of Leadership Memphis and serves on the Boards of Circles of Success Learning Academy (Chair), United Way of the Mid-South, The Works, Inc., Women’s Foundation, the local American Cancer Society chapter and the Government Affairs Review Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. A nine-year breast cancer survivor, she is an avid advocate for women’s health services.
