MASS INTENTIONS FOR HOLY WEEK:

MAY 15th, 2016 - SOLEMNITY OF PENTECOST SUNDAY: One miracle of Pentecost was that, despite their diversity, each listener heard God’s word in his or her own language. The meaning for stewardship is that, by sharing the gifts poured out on us by the Holy Spirit, we will be empowered to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters, whatever they may be.

THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit?

Reflections on Today’s Readings:

FOCUS: We are to use the unique gifts and talents given to us by the Spirit to further the work and mission of the Church. We are reminded by St. Paul in today’s second reading that we were baptized in one Spirit into the one body. The Spirit has bestowed unique gifts and talents upon each of us, and we are to use these gifts and talents upon each of mission of the Church and to help build up God’s kingdom on earth. Like the Apostles, we are to boldly proclaim our faith and use our gifts to serve others.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, filled with the Holy Spirit, the Apostles speak to the crowd. Those present hear the message in their native tongue. In the second reading, Paul explains that it is through the Holy Spirit that one can profess Jesus as Lord and receive gifts. In the Gospel, Jesus appears to the disciples. He breathes on the saying, Receive the Holy Spirit.

Fact of Life Choosing Gender Ignores Truth of Human Person Excerpt of Article by Theresa Farnham and Mary

Rice Hanson, Our Sunday Visitor 4/26/16 In his apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia (“The Joy of Love”), Pope Francis — a champion of inclusivity — points to the source of the problem: gender ideology. He warns that gender ideology “denies the difference and reciprocity in nature of a man and a woman and envisages a society without sexual differences, thereby eliminating the anthropo-logical basis of the family… Consequently, human identity becomes the choice of the individual, one which can also change over time” (No. 56). Pope Francis sees gender ideology as a grave threat — to the family, to the very idea of what it means to be human, and thus to the Church’s mission of evangelization. His concerns echo those of Pope Benedict XVI, who said in a 2012 address to the Roman Curia: “It is now becoming clear that the very notion of being — of what being human really means — is being called into question. … When the freedom to be creative becomes the freedom to create oneself, then necessarily the Maker himself is denied and ultimately man, too, is stripped of his dignity as a creature of God, as the image of God at the core of his being.”

“Vatican Splendors” at the Reagan Library

There are still a few seats left on our trip to the Reagan Library to view the extraordinary collection of historical and religious objects dating as far back as the first century, including works by Michelangelo and Bernini. The $76 cost will include your entrance admission to the exhibit and the Library, as well as a BBQ buffet lunch, water on the bus, and all gratuities. We will be leaving at 9 AM on Wednesday, July 13, and returning to St Anastasia at 6 PM. Call Laurette for reservations at 310-670-2488. Reservations must be fully paid by June 3. (Do not send replies to this email address -- please send all replies directly to Laurette.)

Things to do in the Jubilee Year: In calling for the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis is encouraging the faithful to know the face of God's mercy — Jesus Christ Incarnate — and to show that face of mercy to our friends and neighbors (as well as our enemies!). Here is a list/guide to help us: Forgive those who have hurt you or have done you wrong. If possible, consider forgiving debts owed you and/or returning collateral. Go to Confession regularly — monthly or even weekly. Read and meditate on the Sacred Scriptures, especially the Gospel of Luke. Perform one or more works of mercy every day. Go on a pilgrimage. Share the Good News of God's mercy through your words and good deeds. Place the Divine Mercy Image in a prominent place in your home and venerate it daily. TO CONTINUE NEXT BULLETIN...

A PRAYER TO THE SPIRIT Spirit of Jesus, poured out in flames of fire upon your disciples on the day of Pentecost, we pray to you: Set afire the hearts of your faithful so that they will announce in all the languages of the world the wonders of the salvation of God. —From Come, Lord Jesus by Lucien Deiss, CSSP, copyright © 1976, 1981, Lucien Deiss. Tips for preventing abduction

Teaching children about abduction safety is important, but the ultimate responsibility lies with trusted adults. One thing you can do is use role-playing scenarios to help children learn how to recognize and respond to risky situations. To learn more about abduction and how to better protect your child please email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227 to receive a fact sheet from KidSmartz.org.

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, May 15th, 2016 Solemnity of Pentecost

The Advocate, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—He will teach you

everything and remind you of all that [I] told you. John 14:26

Happy Birthday! Today’s Feast of Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Today we remember that Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to be with us always. Jesus’ promise was fulfilled when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in a powerful rush of wind and tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit’s presence gave them God’s own strength and power to spread the Good News and begin the Church. The Holy Spirit is still here, alive in the Church today. When we’re open to the Spirit in us, we can do amazing things. Now that’s some birthday gift!

Holy Spirit, open my heart to you!
