Dear Parishioners,
I pray that the Easter Season continues to be one of hope and a great spirit of unity between you and the Lord. I pray that the Season gives you hope as you continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. We celebrate today, Divine Mercy Sunday, which gives us another sense of the presence of God to us in all of the circumstances of our lives.
As we continue the journey of the Easter Season, scripture focuses us on discipleship as a way for all of us to be present to Jesus. We can live that very faithfully in our own homes, as we continue to be physically separate from the public. Virtues that are important for us to be building in our lives are kind-ness and gentleness. As you share time together, make them part of your con-versation and suggest to one another ways that they can become a bigger part of life in your home. Include the intention of growth in these virtues in your daily prayer as individuals and as a household.
We all need to be practicing self-discipline during these trying times. A great discipline I find is “patience”. Often, we are better able to cope with one another outside our homes than while sharing life with those within our homes. Here is a great discipline for us to work on that will foster newness in our relationships. Remember we can disagree without getting angry, we can listen even when we disagree, and we can accept another’s opinion as a way of offering respect.
I want to finish this note with a big thank you to all who have worked so hard behind the scenes to help us know the experience of Holy Week as best we could this year. Thank you again to all of you who continue to support our parishes financially in these weeks.
God bless all during this Easter Season,
Fr. Mike

Help Celebrate the Feast of St. George
This month, we will be celebrating the Feast of St. George. To help with this occasion, we are asking members of our parish family, especially children, to draw either a picture of the dragon or a picture of St. George Church. Once completed, have someone take a photo of the artist with their drawing and send to Judy Petrangeli at [email protected]. Stay tuned to the bulletin and other media. All photos should be submitted ASAP. Thanks for participating.
“Faith in the resurrection of Jesus says that there is a future for every human being; the cry for unending life which is a part of the person is indeed an-swered. God exists: that is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even be-gins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed.” - Pope Benedict XVI

This Week’s Word—
Today is the Octave of Easter, the eighth day of Easter, and is known as Divine Mercy Sunday. The name comes from a revelation by Christ to St. Faustina Kow-alska, a Polish nun who was Canonized in 2000 by St. John Paul II. Today’s feast celebrates the bountiful mercy God bestows on those who sincerely seek for-giveness. The following reflection comes from Fr. Richard Rohr: “Jesus is identify-ing forgiveness with breath, with the very air we breathe. The Holy Spirit is seem-ingly given with a breath. The Spirit is coexistent with life itself. The union of Spirit and life is immediately followed by the story of Thomas, who needed to be in touch with his own wounds and know that God can transform them before he could believe that God could do the same in the body of Jesus….If you’ve never experienced your own need for mercy, never had a need for the forgiveness of a friend….or a family member who is willing to overlook our own offenses, ….it is almost impossible to know how God could forgive you….Jesus is saying to the en-tire community of Christians, to all of us, not just to a select group called priests, that we have the power to liberate one another. We have the power to bind one another up …. And if we have not entered into that graceful releasing, healing, surrendering, and discovering that forgiveness always is, I don’t think we can ex-perience it from God.”
This week, we invite you to ask yourself if you believe in God’s desire to forgive our sins. Do you seek God’s mercy and forgiveness? If this is hard to do, is it be-cause you hold onto your own wounds, coldness and unforgiveness? Challenge yourself to live a life of mercy and forgiveness.

Welcome to the Easter Season!
From very early days, the Church has celebrated Pentecost 50 days after East-er. After the Second Vatican Council, the Church confirmed that these 50 days should be celebrated as the Easter Season. “The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast, or better as one ‘great Sunday.’ These above all others are the days for the singing of the Alleluia.” (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar #22)
Why 50 days? Doesn’t that seem excessively long for a celebration? Surely 50 days is a long time for most celebrations, but the truth of the Resurrection takes a long time to process, and even in 50 days it is humanly impossible to fully acknowledge what Christ’s death and resurrection mean for us. So we count a week of weeks (49 days) and then add one more day… a number that was seen early in our history as representing eternity.
This year, we can be especially grateful for this long Easter Season. It will last until Pentecost on May 31. Perhaps by then we will be able to gather in small groups. At the very least we should be really good at celebrating Mass via Fa-cebook.
During this time when we are isolated, we can find ways to celebrate the gift of the Easter Season in our homes. If we were in Church, we would mark Eastertime by singing lots of Alleluias, by renewing our Baptismal promises and being sprinkled with holy water, by keeping our Paschal Candle in a place of honor, by reading from the Acts of the Apostles which retells the story of those earliest days when the Church was brand new. Perhaps we can find home rituals that will reflect these community rituals that we are missing. To get you started, here is a prayer to say together, celebrating this special time.
Glorious and eternal God, we bless you this Easter season for the saving sacrifice of your dearly beloved Son who died willingly on a cross that we might live. Through his resurrection, may we live truly convinced of your love and committed to your peace. By the holy power of the spirit, make us so strong in faith that through our daily lives others too may come to believe. For Christ is risen! Alleluia! Amen.

During the Church’s millennium celebration, in 2000, Pope John Paul II declared that the Second Sunday of Easter be known as “Divine Mercy Sunday” throughout the Catholic Church. He has written an encyclical, laying out the doctri-nal and scriptural foundations for our understanding of mercy. This Polish pope looked to a holy wom-an of Poland, Faustina Kowalska for inspiration. He canonized St. Faustina at that same Mass in 2000 that he instituted the observation of Divine Mercy Sunday.-Catholic Update, 0410
The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads. The Chaplet is preceded by two open-ing prayers from the Diary of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer. If you would like to learn how to pray this devotion, please refer to:

My Jesus, I believe that You are pre-sent in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.
