St. Aloysius Book Club
Meets on Thursdays at 7 pm, on the first floor of the Parish Center. The next book selections: Mar. 26, “The Husband Secret” by Liane Moriarty; April 30, “The Silent Sister” by Diane Chamberlain. As always, Happy Reading. All are invited for good conversation & good company. ************************************************************** Do you remember the 1966 Movie “A Man for All Seasons”, based on Robert Bolt’s biography of St. Thomas More? More’s reputation for humanity and integrity, his firm belief that Truth was something worth dying for, his good humor, good sense, decency and justice, these were the making of a great saint, indeed of a martyr who died for the Faith. This month, cable TV will present “Wolf Hall”, a reimagining of the court of King Henry VIII, one of the most formative eras of English history. “Wolf Hall” is a dramatization by Hilary Mantel; some critics have called the work brilliant. But, here’s the rub. The Thomas More of “Wolf Hall” is presented as a hypocrite, a bigot and a persecutor; he is portrayed as a joyless puritan, a misogynist and obsessive fanatic. And so the 16th century biographers of St. Thomas More (Erasmus, Roper, Et al.) and Shakespeare’s play, “Sir Thomas More”, and a stream of other admiring biographies, were all ignored by Mantel’s portrayal. Admittedly, More’s world is not our world. By the standards of his age, he was a decent and compassionate man. Mantel’s portrait of More is too dark, even to the point of misrepresenting More. There are those in our society intent on revisionism, of attempting to darken the name and reputation of certain great people. Cui bono? Let young adults and teens viewing “Wolf Hall” know about this inaccurate picture of the great St. Thomas More. Ironically, “Wolf Hall” is otherwise considered to have an excellent grasp of Tudor history. MJD

Dear Parishioners,
Today is the third Sunday of Lent and it is also the first of
three Sundays - scrutinies- that are set aside for the
instruction of those who will be baptized and received into
the church at the Holy Saturday Liturgy. These Sundays
can also be times for us to examine (scrutinize) our own
lives, in what we have done and what we have failed to
do. Those to be baptized are called forward with their
sponsors and all those assembled are invited to pray in
silence for these candidates. Those of us who are full
members of the church are also in need of healing and the
strength that comes from the support and prayers of our
brothers and sisters in faith.
How do you visualize Jesus in today’s Gospel? Is He on a
rampage? What is this all about? Buying and selling in
the temple were always a part of the entrance to the
temple; the coins that were exchanged allowed the people
to pay their taxes for the upkeep of the temple and the
buying and selling of animals was for the offering of
sacrifice, a part of the ritual. This is not about the money
changers in the temple but the money changing had
become the focus of their lives, not prayer, not sacrifice
but the focus was on all the externals and not on the
internal matters. The temple had been changed into a
place void of faith and love.
As the scrutinies ask us to examine our motives, our true
faith and love, Lent can become a time of personal reform
but it can also be a time of community reform, trying to
change social institutions and attitudes that take away the
rights that all people have to justice and peace. We all
need to listen to the injustices in our world and take action
to heal those who are neglected, abused and treated
unjustly. At the dismissal of the Mass we are encouraged
to bring the Word to others through our actions. We need
to have an action plan as we go out to the community.
What will we do this week, this Lent to reform our lives
and work for justice and peace?
Peace!

Faith Quest 2015 The parishes of West Essex have announced their speakers for the Lenten Adult Spirituality Forum
FAITH QUEST 2015.
The programs will be held Wednesday evenings March 11, 18 and 25 from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m at Notre Dame Church at 359 Central Avenue in North Caldwell, N.J. The annual program is open to the public and the three speaker topic areas are: Prayer and Spirituality, Sacred Scripture, and Faith in Practice.
Faith in Practice Presenters:
March 11 - Laura Sodano, Hunger Action Coordinator of the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, will present on “Our Children, Our Future”. In 2013, nearly 49 million people in America lacked access to a dependable and adequate source of food, including close to 16 million children, according to the USDA. Sodano examines the basic needs of children, the consequences when those needs are unmet, and policies that can help. She will provide a historical look at the Community FoodBank of NJ and its social programs that assist New Jersey residents, especially the very young. Sodano is active in several ministries in her faith community of Our Lady of the Holy Angels in Little Falls.
Prayer and Spirituality Presenters: March 11 – Father John Gabriel, Pastor of St. James The Apostle in Springfield, N.J., will present on “The Saints of Lent”. Too often saints are viewed as icons in stained glass or statues of marble, yet they were real flesh and blood people who tried to live the Gospel in their own times and situations. The Church holds them up for our veneration, but also for imitation. Father Gabriel looks at what the lives of the Lenten Saints, especially St. Joseph and St. Patrick, can teach about holiness in today’s world. He will also provide insights on what can be learned from lesser known saints of Lent like St. Katherine Drexel, Saint Polycarp, and Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Father Gabriel was pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Fairfield from 1999 until 2008, and Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese from 2008 to 2013.
Sacred Scripture Presenters:
March 11 – Sister Donna Ciangio, O.P. on “The Joy of the Gospel: Reaching Out to All”. Sister Donna will look at how we should all strive to be joyful and how Pope Francis gives us much to contemplate on in his pastoral letter, The Joy of the Gospel. Her presentation will focus on Gospel joy, how to apply it to one’s life, and the importance of reaching out with this message of hope to different generations especially young members of our parishes and families. Sister Donna, a Sister of St. Dominic of Caldwell, is a lecturer, author and
director of Church Leadership Consultation. She is also
Director of Faith Formation at St. Rose of Lima Church,
Short Hills, an adjunct professor at Drew University in the
Doctor of Ministry Program, and a member of the Board of
Trustees for Caldwell University and for the Center for
Ministry Development.
*********************************
An offering of $3.00 per session or $10.00 for the four week series is requested to help defray expenses. Pre-registration is also requested. For a brochure and registration form, contact Notre Dame parish at 973-226-0979 or any of the other sponsoring parishes. Attendance at prior sessions is not necessary to benefit from participation at a later session. All sessions qualify for catechist certification. ************************************************
LENTEN COLLECTIONS During the season of Lent, we once again strive to live the Gospel message of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and loving those who feel unloved. with Trinity Academy Community
The Most Reverend Archbishop Bernard Hebda visited Trinity Academy on
February 6, 2015, and celebrated February’s First Friday Mass with the entire Trinity Academy

During his three-hour visit, Archbishop Hebda took a tour of Trinity Academy and spent
time with each classroom, listening to the choir sing, observing students presentations and
visiting students in their science, art and technology labs. At the end of his visit, Archbishop
Hebda said he enjoyed his visit and said he would like to come back soon.
“It was a thrill to have Archbishop Hebda accept our invitation to come and visit our
school” said Mary Cassels, Trinity Academy principal. “The entire student body felt the
