WELCOME!Dear Parishioners,

St. Albert the Great Parish is a loving community blessed in countless ways. This Guidebook and Directory provides you with an up-to-date listing of the members of our faith family. You will also find the names of the dedicated staff and generous stewards who provide the leadership and direction for our parish life and ministries. This publication serves as a tremendous resource describing the different opportunities that, as good stewards, each one of us may share our time and talent with the gifts God has given us.

I hope you will regard this Guidebook and Directory not simply as words on a page about St. Albert the Great Parish, but as a solid affirmation and living testimonial of Christian disciples striving to follow the Lord in how we welcome and love all people in compassionate care and selfless service.

Please join me in thanking our benefactors and supporting our advertisers for their generous contribution resulting in this publication. Due to their generosity, St. Albert the Great Parish is able to provide each member with this helpful tool! God bless them!

Parish Pastoral CouncilThe Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) is a consultative body to the pastor, acting in an advisory capacity to assist the pastor, staff and parishioners while helping to carry out the parish mission. The PPC provides oversight and connectivity to many committees. The PPC meets monthly and is comprised of parishioners who serve three-year terms. To be a prospective member of the PPC, a candidate must be nominated (or can self-nominate) and should be an active, baptized, confirmed parishioner who is at least 18 years of age or older. Names are drawn from this list of nominees at Mass on the Solemnity of Pentecost. Four new members are selected annually. The Parish Pastoral Council members are listed on the St. Albert website along with their contact information. For more information, contact Chairperson Charles Stafford 812-661-7573.

Finance CouncilThe Finance Council advises the pastor in matters of finance and in decisions involving the temporal goods of the parish and school. To ensure the responsible stewardship of parish financial resources the Council reviews budgets, accounting practices and procedures, financial reporting, purchasing procedures, business office practices, Sunday collections, etc. Meetings are held based on parish fiscal needs. The current members of the Finance Council are Larry Brunner (parish manager) and lay members: Jon Deye, Mindy Koeberlein (audit chair), Phil Mattingly, Craig Vermost, and Jim Whelan (chair). Please contact Jim Whelan at 502-423-9418 for more information.

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNIONMinisters of the Eucharist assist with the distribution of Holy Communion at weekend and daily liturgies. Ministers also take Communion to the residents of several nearby nursing homes and to the homebound of the parish on Sunday mornings. Scheduling is done on a rotating basis and training is provided for this vital and rewarding ministry. Anyone who has been confirmed (8th Grade or older) is eligible to serve as an Extraordinary Ministe r of Holy Communion. Please contact Paula Englert at 426-3542 for information.

LECTORSThe role of the lector is to read the scriptures: that is to praise, glorify, and publicly proclaim the Word of God during the liturgy. All parishioners, high school age and older, can volunteer. Training is provided prior to initial assignment and periodically thereafter. Contact Mike Lush at 292-0006.

MINISTERS OF HOSPITALITY (USHERS)Ministers of Hospitality welcome the community before each liturgy. Their primary job, however, is to help people find seats, take up the collection, pass out bulletins, take counts of the number of attendees, and straighten the Church after Mass. These ministers are assigned to a specific Mass for one month at a time on a rotating basis, with a normal commitment of only 2-4 months each year. All men and women of the parish, from Eighth grade on, are invited to volunteer. Contact Mark Streble at 541-1654.

MUSIC MINISTRYThe music ministry is comprised of an adult choir, children’s choir, cantors, and instrumentalists. Contact Laura Sullivan at 425-3940, Ext. 148.

The Adult Choir leads music at weekend liturgies from September through May as well as other special liturgical celebrations. Rehearsals are on Wednesday nights from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and on Sundays at 10:00 AM. Membership is open to all parishioners high school age and older.

The Children’s Choir sings at various weekend Masses throughout the year, including First Communion and Christmas Eve. Rehearsals are held for 1st-4th grades on Thursdays from 2:50-3:30 PM. 5th-8th grade choir rehearses Fridays from 2:45-3:45 PM.

Cantors are active members of the adult choir and are selected by audition. A short training session is required and special rehearsals may be necessary throughout the year. Cantors are responsible for leading the congregation in common sacred song and responsorial singing.

Instrumentalists enhance the liturgical celebrations and can participate on a frequent or occasional basis. Auditions are required.

GIVING TREEThe Giving Tree Ministry is a yearly event whereby gifts are purchased by St. Albert families to support locations within Kentucky as they tend to less fortunate children and adults. Christmas trees with ornaments for this ministry are displayed in the Gathering Space in November. For more information contact Paula Mattingly at 394-9817.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYThis organization provides housing for low-income families by giving them the opportunity to build and purchase their own home. Volunteers provide assistance for the home construction. Houses are built every other year. Contact Christina Effinger at 502-541-2553 or Mike Effinger at 641-3000.

HAND IN HANDHand in Hand Ministries seeks to build strong communities around the world, knowing that this goal begins at home. They strengthen our own community by opening hearts and minds to the needs of others through a unique immersion trip program. They provide resources for the economically vulnerable through on-going programs that focus on safe housing, education, and health care. In all that they do, Hand in Hand seeks to build community, one person, one family at a time. St. Albert supports Hand in Hand Ministries in a variety of ways. Throughout the year, St. Albert’s sponsors several collections. Donated Gently Used Toys are collected the weekend following Christmas each year. These toys are donated to Hand in Hand Ministries for children in Appalachia, Kentucky. The weekend of Epiphany, St. Albert’s collects household cleaning supplies (see the website for details). These items are donated to families in need in Appalachia. Providing financial support to Hand in Hand Ministries is also part of the Social Concerns Ministry at St. Albert the Great. Additionally, Immersion trips to Appalachia, Belize and Nicaragua are offered throughout the year. Hand in Hand Ministries states “The toughest trip you will ever take will be one of the greatest weeks of your life!” For more information regarding mission trips contact Cynthia Rigby at [email protected].

For Immersion Trips to Appalachia or local volunteer opportunities at Hand in Hand Ministries contact Carole Sutton at [email protected] more information, contact Kevin Greenwood at [email protected].

JAIL MINISTRYThe Louisville jail currently includes 3 facilities downtown (plus a 4th overflow facility when needed). There is a population of about 2000 at any given time. The Archdiocese of Louisville currently provides Catholic Communion Services to the residents through the efforts of one Sister of Charity and a couple Deacons. One facility currently has no services at all. Some areas are only covered once a month. Most areas are reached twice a month. It’s a case of too few trying to serve too many. We would like to be able to be of better service here in Louisville to our brothers and sisters behind bars.

That means calling forth men and women volunteers (30 or more across our Louisville parishes) willing to lead services. Candidates need to be certified by the Diocese as Eucharistic Ministers. Volunteers must be able and willing to go into a difficult environment, relate personally to those they find there, share and reflect on the Word and take Communion to them. Candidates can only go into the facilities after undergoing complete background checks and fingerprinting and receiving formal orientation by the Metro Police and Corrections Department. This process teaches the many policies that volunteers must follow and identifies why most things are contraband and can’t be taken into the jail. We would like to be able to take candidates in on a “check-it-out” basis but that is not currently possible. We can’t rule out that you might go through the complete process and then find that it’s not for you. But we really need your help. We are prepared to give you the kind of training you need to understand how to function inside the walls of the jails. We will provide all with the liturgical and scriptural resources you need. Pray and think about it. Call Deacon Steve Marks, 502-964-6966 or email at [email protected] for more information.

SOPHIA’S CLOSETSophia’s Closet is named after one of our own young members at St. Albert the Great, Sophia Gyimesi, who has displayed many acts of compassion for children and youth living in poverty in our own community. Sophia’s Closet began several years ago collecting gently used uniforms that are donated to schools and families who are in need of additional uniforms but often cannot afford one uniform much less a second. The program has expanded and now collects gently used school items such as lunch boxes, backpacks, youth clothing specific to coats, shoes, books, and other learning materials such as games and puzzles. Donated items are distributed to various organizations, schools and youth centers within the Kentuckiana area. Parents and parishioners are not asked to purchase items but to clean out your child’s or grandchild’s closet or under the bed where items, that are like new or gently-used, typically become lost. These like-new items can be reused and appreciated by a needy child in our community.(New items will always be accepted, but the focus of Sophia’s Closet is to teach children and youth the significance of donating their own personal items to other children who are in need.) Please contact Mary Lynn Thieneman-Legel at [email protected] or 326-3686.
