The application site consists of 9 no. lapsed Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus)

coppice stools. Some of the trees are growing closely together. These stems

have not been cut for a long time and have: (i) excessive extended growth with

top heavy crowns (see Photograph 1); (ii) narrow crowns; (iii) limited foliage; (iv)

poor form (v) damaged stems (see Photograph 2) The stems are generally in a

poor physiological condition raising concerns that they will fail thus weakening the

physiological condition of the stools and leading to their death. The failure or

collapse of the stems could also lead to damage to other TPO trees in the garden

or to people or property in the immediate area. In order to regenerate and retain

the stools - and remove any risk from stem failure - it is proposed to re-coppice 7

no. of the Hornbeams (TA-TG). A further 2 no. of the Hornbeams will be removed

(TH-TI). Hornbeams TA-TG:- Due to their poor condition it is proposed to reduce

the stems in 2 no. phases in order to provide a larger surface for shoot-

production and lessen the potential impact of these works. The stems will initially

be reduced to between 2-3 m in height. They will be cut back to areas of

epicormic growth or lateral buds (see Photograph 3) that will have enough growth

potential to sustain and regenerate the tree. All tree works would follow guidance

set out in BS 39989 (2010) `Tree Work - Recommendations'. Hornbeam TH-TI:-

remove stools due to their poor condition. This was recommended as part of

previous planning applications on the site and was not disputed by the Local

Authority Tree Officer. It is proposed to replant 2 no. Hornbeam (Carpinus

betulus) to the northern site boundary. These will be 10-12 cm girth and

300-350 cm height at planting.
