Chapter II The Disciples Of The Lord

THE PRECURSORS – “Jesus Christ sent the Disciples into the cities which He was about to enter…” So Our Lord is preparing to go into the cities of China: the Disciples have to prepare the ways. Here is one of the very main aims of the new Congregation. The name recalls these friends of Christ and propagators of His evangelical message. I thought a lot, before adopting this name; and then I decided by reflecting especially upon the quoted passage of the Gospel.

I even liked the name, because I thought of the disciples of Confucius, who were the gatherers and the propagators of his thoughts. I open up a parenthe-sis: you must not be startled if I mention Confucius. He is to be considered and honoured, for example, like Plato, Aristotle, Socrates. He flourished before Christ, and he therefore could not be a Christian. But undoubtedly many of his precepts are salutary and worthy of all our respect. It is good natural law, against which the supernatural does not erect itself; but the supernatural purifies and elevates the natural. Moreover, Confucius gave China a moral law and a way of family and social living, which have con-stituted for millenniums the solid structure upon which the Chinese people supported themselves. Christ must not be pitted against Confucius; but one has to depart from Confucius in order to arrive at Christ, like how Saint Augustine talks about the city of the world, that is, he makes use of Roman culture in order to make the city of God be better under-stood; he seizes the thoughts of Plato in order to deeply express Christian thoughts.

THE DISCIPLES GO TWO BY TWO – And so go even yourselves. Why? It is for emulating the first Disciples of the Lord and to have mutual physical and

spiritual support. If someone gets sick, his companion can look after him. Sacred Scripture even says, “Brother helped by brother is a fortress, friends are like the bars of a keep” (Prov. 18:19). “If the one falls, the other will help the fallen one. But woe to the solitary person! If that one should fall, there is no other to help” (Eccl. 4:10). A companion on a trip is always a blessing.

However, there is also a moral reason why the Disciples should go two by two. The Lord told the ancient Disciples that He was sending them amongst wolves. The world is full of wolves. And we always have to protect ourselves from the wolves outside, that is from external temptations; and from inner wolves, that is from the temptations of the flesh. Such self-willed people with no reverence are not afraid of offending the glorious ones, “but the angels in their greater strength and power make no complaint or accusation against them in front of the Lord” (2 Pt. 2:11). Since self-indulgence is the opposite of the Spirit, the Spirit is totally against it, “and it is precisely because the two are so opposed to each other that you may not always do what you want” (Gal. 5:17).

Now a companion in temptation often represents salvation. You can pray together, confess yourselves to each other. Moreover, you have to, insofar as it is pos-sible, participate in communal exercises of piety.

If you are not always united with God, trips can be an argument of dissipation. The Imitation of Christ says, “Whoever pilgrimages a lot, rarely sanctifies.”

Going two by two, and Christ is in your midst. “Where two or more are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mt. 18:20).

In response to the instruction from the Archdiocese of Toronto, our Parish has chosen March 24 (Tuesday), 10:00am to 12:00pm to be the Special Diocesan Day of Confessions. Our Parish Commu-nity Reconciliation Service will be on Wednesday, April 1 between 7:00pm and 9:30pm. You are en-couraged to make an effort to come on that day to reconcile with God and your neighbors, and be better prepared for Easter.

The Rules for Fasting and Abstinence

One of the foremost duties of a Christian is to pro-fess his faith through repentance and sacrifice. Re-pentance is an action to show one’s love and belief in God, for belief without action is, like what Jesus has once criticized the Pharisees, only outward appear-ance alone.

The Code of Canon Law prescribes:

1. The penitential days and times in the universal Church are every Friday of the whole year and the season of Lent.

2. Abstinence from meat is to be observed on all Fridays, unless a solemnity should fall on a Friday. The law of abstinence binds those who have com-pleted their fourteenth year.

3. Abstinence and fasting are to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The law of fasting binds those who have attained their eighteenth year, until the beginning of their sixtieth year.

Traditionally, abstinence forbids the use of meat of warm blooded animals. Fasting includes abstinence and taking only one full meal. Some food (not equal-ing another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the evening—depending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. The sick, the weak and the pregnant are not bound by the law of abstinence and fasting.

Please Pray for the Evangelization Mission of the Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord in Canada

Having served in the Archdiocese of Toronto for eleven years, the Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord (CDD), after many prayers, discernments and discussions, has finally decided to have a long term commitment for the Chinese Catholic commu-nity in the Archdiocese of Toronto. The first priori-ty, thus, is the cultivation of vocation and training of young priests. In order to achieve this, it is neces-sary to purchase a property in a tranquil location for the cultivation of vocations and spiritual devel-opment. Ardent parishioners who wish to contrib-ute to this project are requested to make a cheque payable to The Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord of Canada. I wish to thank you in anticipation for your generosity and support.
