WHEN STRESS STRIKES… CONSIDER THIS THREE-STEP SOLUTION

♦ Yes you can! When stress hits, think in terms of solutions, not problems. Review your achievements. To keep life positive, do something you love: take a long walk; write a poem; read a book. This time will refuel your energy and refresh you.

♦ Do what’s best for you. Each day, work to improve your diet, and to get enough rest and exercise. Rid your life of clutter, both in terms of things and of commitments and tasks.

Concentrate on what’s valuable and uplifting. ♦ Understand the big picture. During any stressful

situation, ask yourself: “What matters most here?” Chances are that the problem won’t matter next month or perhaps even tomorrow. Take a breath and say a prayer of thanksgiving to the loving God who’s with you in good times and bad.

JUST FOR TODAY I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable.

I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others.

I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

Quota assigned to St. Agnes………..$250,000 Pledges already made……………….$121,911 We need to fulfill our quota……...…$128,089

Our deep gratitude to the parishioners who generously have made a pledge to the ABCD Annual Appeal. Until now 115 parishioners of St. Agnes had made their pledges. It will be ideal if each family contributes in a generous way to the Archbishop’s Charities Drive. If you have not yet made your pledge, please try to make it this week. There are special “ABCD” envelopes at the entrance of the church and in the pews. The Drive will be finished by February 24th. Your gift will be a great help and hope for the Archdiocese of Miami. May the Good Lord bless your generosity.

HUMOR CORNER Reason I love My Mother

1. My mother taught me logic. “Because I said so, that’s why.”

2. My mother taught me about osmosis. “Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”

3. My mother taught me irony. “If you don’t stop crying right now I’ll give you something to cry about.”

BLOOD DRIVE: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD

The Community Blood Centers of South Florida will be at St. Agnes Auditorium collecting blood donations from 8:30 A.M. - 3:30 P.M. and from 5:00 P.M.- 10:00 P.M. this Sunday February 3rd, 2013. Remember you can save up to 4 lives when donating blood. If you are healthy, share the gift of life. On September 30th, 2012 we had the last Blood Drive. On that date 67 pints were collected. Our deep gratitude to all the donors.

MAY GOD KEEP YOU May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall softly upon your fields, And, until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

A GENTLEMAN A gentleman is a man who is clean inside and out. Who neither looks up to the rich or down to the poor. Who loses without squabbling and who can win without bragging. Who is considerate of women, children and old people. Who is too brave to lie, too generous to cheat, and who takes his share of the world and lets others have theirs.

RECOGNITION AND GRATEFULNESS His Holiness Pope Benedict the XVI, at the request of the Archbishop of Miami, Thomas Wenski, has elevated seven priests from this Archdiocese to the rank of Monsignor. Among them is the one writing these words, Father José L. Hernando, pastor of St. Agnes in Key Biscayne for almost 20 years. What does this title of monsignor mean? More

than an honor, a distinction, a prize, or something of that sort, this title refers to recognition by the Holy Father of the pastoral work that I have carried out for more than 50 years as a priest in the Church. My immediate reaction, upon hearing the news, was one of surprise, joy and gratitude. Surprise, because my character and lifestyle did not leave room for ever thinking or hoping that I would receive titles of distinction and honors. It is difficult to make the right choice when trying to recognize one without running the risk of leaving out others that might equally or better deserve it. On the other hand, I feel glad and happy, much more so when I see the joy of this community; joy that is constantly being expressed to me through so many greetings and gestures of love. It would be false humility on my part to say that I am not worthy of such a recognition, although I cannot cease thinking that many other priests deserve it equally or more than me. If one should always be grateful, much more so on this occasion: I am deeply grateful to Pope Benedict the XVI for appointing me “Chaplain to His Holiness”, and also express my gratitude to Archbishop Thomas Wenski who evidently made the petition in my favor. I include in this recognition all who have labored and shared with me during so many years. You are a very important part of my priestly life. Your prayers, your friendship and your support have been decisive in my ministry. This is why this recognition and distinction also belong to all of you. This is why we all share the same joy. How do you want us to address you: Monsignor or Father? After being called “Father Hernando” for over 50 years, I think it is difficult to change names, because being addressed as father comes out spontaneously. I think it is easier for you, and it makes me feel better, if you continue to call me Father, more so at this stage when I rather feel like a father or grandfather to so many children and adults whom I truly love. A thousand “thank you” and a thousand blessings to all for your greetings and love.

Notice: The investiture ceremony of the seven monsignors will be held on Sunday, March 10, at 5:00 p.m. in St. Mary’s Cathedral. More information is forthcoming.

Sunday’s Message Luke 4: 21-30

PastorPastor’’s Notess Notes

Faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love

— 1 Corinthians 13:13

“No prophet is accepted in his own native place”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus preaches that God’s love extends to all men and women, not just to the Jewish community but to those of every race and nation. His Nazareth hearers do not take kindly to that message; they consider His admonition a betrayal of His own people and a blasphemy of His faith.

All of us are called to be prophets. Acting “propheti-cally” begins with embracing what is right and just and then being willing to confront whatever evil seeks to destroy that good.

May we assume our call to be “prophets” revealing the love of God in our love of others, proclaiming the justice and peace of God in the humility and selflessness in which we seek to live our lives, celebrating God’s forgiveness in our own struggle to forgive and be reconciled with others.

Inspirada en Benedicto XVI, “Caritas in veritate” 78
