reality, as we follow Christ, proclaiming and witnessing to his Gospel in our lives. Through liturgical worship and the ministries of the Church, we
love and serve each other in our service of God. THEREFORE, we the Parish Community of Saint Valentine, are dedicated to serving others

A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR Dear Parishioners
In this Sunday’s Gospel (Lk 6: 17, 20-26), Jesus tells
his disciples of the newness of the evangelical life (St
Cyril of Alexandria). Jesus transforms their behavior
and attitudes to a truly Christian culture that never
existed before. The beatific life (beautiful life) that
Jesus promises his disciples is the cure for the seven
deadly sins that have damaged our human life.
Jesus says, “Blessed are you who are poor, for the
kingdom of God is yours.” Jesus can cure us of our
idolatry to money; the Christian gives up his greed
for money, so that he learns to depend on God. And
our faith and trust in God let the kingdom of God
grow in our souls. If we desire the kingdom of God,
we would give up building our own kingdom here on
earth. The mighty and powerful of the earth have the
danger of hubris, which is excessive pride and anger
when their will is not done, and envy when others
have what they don’t have. The love of money is the
root of all evil (1 Tm 6: 10).
Jesus says, “Blessed are you who are now hungry, for
you will be satisfied.” To follow Christ is to be
hungry for the things of God and wait for him to feed
and satisfy our souls. When our hearts are full of the
the perishable things of the world, we become lazy to
do the will of God, and we no longer depend on God
to nourish our souls. Instead, the soul settles for the
empty things that the world has to offer.
Jesus says, “Blessed are you who are now weeping,
for you will laugh.” Christians are called to weep
and pray for the sinful world. Jesus Christ weeps
over Jerusalem for the stubbornness of his people for
they refused to turn from their ways (Mt 23: 37).
Pray & Weep in your soul for yourself and those who
persist in their sins. Don’t get angry at them (Ps 37).
Blessed are you when people hate you because you
belong to Christ. Rejoice when you are able to suffer
an injustice for the sake of Christ; it means that you
belong to him and not to the devil. How do you
know that you are in the Kingdom of God? When the
Holy Spirit gives you the power to resist the lure of
riches, and the desire for vengeance; your desire
would be for the Lord and his holy will!
- Fr. Basil Lek.
