the conversations. Reports are available on Compass now and bookings are
available through Compass from 20th March.

Athletics carnival
The Athletics Carnival occurs on Friday 4th April. This is a required day of attendance and we
look forward to seeing all of our students and staff in their house colours.
Autumn Concert in the Gym
This event is coming up and will be held in the gym on 3rd April. A great opportunity to showcase our
students .
Night of the Notables Parent Presentation
It is an exciting time in Year 8 at BHS. All students have been engaged in the program over the last two
weeks, which has been led by Val Webber, with her team of Year 8 teachers. It is an exciting develop-
ment of interdisciplinary inquiry learning where each student has selected their very own ‘Notable’ to
investigate. Their presentations were held this week and were of a very high calibre.
First Aid
We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer the service of first aid for our students with two highly
trained nurses, Karen and Fiona delivering quality care. We would like to ensure that as parents and
guardians you are aware that this service is for providing ‘first aid’ only and please ensure that you do
not send students to school who are ill. We have had an increasing number of students present to first
aid with issues that would not be described as such and we are asking as parents and guardians that
you speak with your students about what constitutes ‘first aid’, something that requires urgent attention
such as bleeding, broken or dislocated bones etc. Your cooperation would be appreciated
REMINDER: PARENT VEHICLES using drop off Zone
Parents are requested to use only the drop off zone on the left hand side to let their children off and not
stop just inside the gate. Please do not enter the staff car parking area at any time. In addition, due to
security requirements, parents must wait for their students at the school boundaries and if they require
to come into the school they must sign in at the front office.
Thank you for helping keep our students and yours SAFE

Hosts for International Students
at Blackburn High School
We are currently refreshing our list of Homestay Providers for our International Student Program.
You must be English-speaking, willing to help the student(s) adjust to life in Australia and improve their
English through a variety of means. Some of our current hosts provide daily conversation, homework
assistance, watching Australian television and reading through an English novel or magazine together.
You will act in a semi-parental role and keep the school informed about any welfare issues. As a host of
a student under 18, you will need a Working with Children’s Check. You will also be given lots of support
and 24/7 access to the International Student Coordinator.
We need homes within walking distance or with good transport access to the school and students must
have their own room, furnished with bed, cupboard/wardrobe, desk, chair and lamp.
The benefits to you are that you can share in the life of a young person, playing a role in their successes
in life and learn more about the world. They will pay generously for their accommodation.
Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like an
application form.

Student Progress Conferences We are looking forward to seeing many Melba students and parents at the
Student Progress Conferences on Thursday March 27. These conversations
form a key part in teacher-student feedback and build upon the information contained
within the first round of reports. In addition, they provide the basis of developing suc-
cessful strategies at home, as well as in the classroom, to improve student outcomes.
If any parents were unable to make these then please contact the Mentor Teacher of
your child directly to request feedback from the teachers of your children.
Athletics Carnival We finish the term with the House Athletics Carnival on Friday April 4. It promises to
be a great day which our students will be preparing for over the next few weeks. We
encourage any parents who can make their way to the athletics track to do so. Be sure
to wear something blue and loudly support the efforts of Mighty Melba.
Student Leadership On Friday the 14th of March, the leadership team of Melba house attended a leader-
ship workshop just across the road at St Alfred’s Anglican Church. The Mentor Group
Leaders, Year 7 leaders and House Leaders participated in a variety of activities to
develop the skills essential to being a great leader. Students worked on public speak-
ing, working as a team, listening and over all caring for the fantastic group of people
they will be leading throughout the year. It is very important to everyone at Melba
House to be supportive of each other in all the ways they can and this was a really
fun way to reinforce that. The presenter of my group was really animated and engag-
ing and made sure everyone got involved. One of my favourite activities was one in
which everyone in the group had to make a 40 second speech on something they
were passionate about; it was a great way to get to know my fellow leaders and prac-
tice my public speaking skills.
As a leader, I found the workshop very constructive and a lot of fun, too. It made my
friends - who also have a leadership position - and I realise just how important it is to
use this as an opportunity to make further connections with our community at school
and make improvements of the environment we all share.

World's Greatest Shave! This year, we have Connor Smith doing the World's Greatest Shave. Connor wants to
be part of this fundraising event as his nephew passed away due to leukaemia. I would
love for all Melba students and everyone else to come and support Connor next Friday
28th of March 2014. We will be holding the event in the yard, just under the shade ar-
ea near the front of the canteen, but if it's on a rainy day, it will be held up in Melba
House. Hopefully I will see you all there with a gold coin donation to spare. Please
come along and support Connor in this magnificent event.

Leadership Training Day
On Friday 14th of March the Dunlop Leaders went across the road to the New Hope
Church for a leadership training day. We had two presenters from Stride to help us
become better leaders. Overall it was a good day and we learnt a lot.
Year 7 Leaders
We are excited to announce Anuda Basnayaka and Bridgette Parratt as the Dunlop
Year 7 Leaders for 2014. We would also like to acknowledge the other Year 7 appli-
cants for their efforts. We were very impressed by the calibre of students. We look
forward to these students working together to form the Year 7 activities team and
helping to organise Year 7 lunchtime activities in the future.

Student Leadership Day Last Friday (14th of March) Freeman, Hollows, Dunlop and Melba Houses
participated in the Stride Leadership Workshop, across the road at the local church.
Our speaker for the day was Selina. She taught us many, many things about leader-
ship. She taught us skills varying from inclusion of people, to planning out entire
events for the school.
Using group games, activities and stuffed toys. Selina taught all involved valua-
ble skills that we can all take with us through our schooling and leadership roles.

Mentor Program
Students have had time to reflect on their set goals. The recent reports have provided
students feedback on their learning. This information, your discussions at home and dis-
cussions with their Mentor Teachers has enabled students an opportunity to examine
their Term 1 progress. They are able to identify what learning, study and revision strat-
egies have worked and areas for improvement. I encourage parents to attend the Stu-
dent Progress Conferences next week.
VCE students had an assembly to provide them with important information and to sup-
port them with filling in VCE forms. This meant students did not have to miss important
class time.
Between now and the end-of-term we are working creatively on our new House mascot,
new songs and new flags. This is exciting to be part of as this continues to built on our
strong School and House culture. All students and staff will be working together on
these new projects. We will vote for
new House mascot on Friday 21st
March—today.
Recently in the program students and
staff played games against Hollows.
The aim of these sessions have been
to be active, have fun and get to know
more students and teachers from an-
other House. Thanks to Mr Hlasko and
Ms Monda for organising these games.
Organisational. A focus area for Freeman staff has been assisting and challenging all students to attend
Mentor Group on time (8.40am). This will enable students to hear information to help
them be organised for school, be active participants in the program, be connected to
school and their Mentor Group, as well as build strong relationships with staff and stu-
dents.
VCE students who have a ‘study period’ in the morning are expected to attend and be
involved in the Mentor Program. At 9am they would then work in the House area, Year
12 room or Library.
The uniform is being worn well by students. In Terms 2 and 3 boys are able to wear
their short or long sleeve shirt with the tie. It is an expectation the tie will be worn with
either shirt.

The year has started well in French and German. Our new Year 7 students are mak-ing great progress in a short period of time. The mainstream Year 7 classes will soon
be changing over in term two to experience the other language before choosing which one they prefer to continue with for the rest of Year 7 through to the end of Year 9.
Year 8s have also made a good start to the year, with a number of students choosing to re-search famous French and German people for the Night of the Notables.
Our Year 9 students will soon be making choices with regard to their future studies, and we hope to see many of them next year in Languages. Our senior students are focused on their VCE studies and we wish them well.
Upcoming events include the French Crêpe Day, the German Film Festival and the German Day Out.

Chaplain Chaplaincy Program
"Chaplaincy at BHS is partially supported by the Federal Government's National School Chaplaincy and
Student Welfare Program".
We held our 41st Annual General Meeting of the Chaplaincy Committee on Wednesday 12th March at 7.30pm. It is always great to have ‘visitors’ to our AGM and I trust that
this was helpful for some to get further information about the Chaplaincy Program at Blackburn High.
I reported on highlights (and some low points) in the 2013 year and was quite surprised to find that my monthly statistics show that I had over 750 ‘pastoral encounters’ with young people dur-ing that year. There were also many phone calls and meetings with parents and guardians. It is
always a great privilege to work with teenagers and their families —and I do think that our school has fantastic young people.
I would like to thank all our committee members, particularly Julie Jancik who took on the role of treasurer for 2013 and who retired at the end of the year.
Our Committee Executive for 2014 is Graham Whyte (President), Dennis Eastwood (Treasurer), Jennnifer Leong (Assistant Treasurer), and Heather Mitchell (Secretary). Thank you to those who self nominated or accepted a nomination from others. It’s great to have such a willing and capa-
ble team. Committee meetings generally happen on the second Wednesday of each month (during term time) and are held in the Conference Room in the administration building at 7.30pm. Meetings are always open to all and membership of the committee is always open.
We are currently needing some new committee members and if you would like further information
about what’s involved, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school. Being on one of the par-ent based committees is a fantastic way to continue to be involved in your child’s school after they have left primary school. The primary role of the Chaplaincy Committee is to fund raise to
ensure continuation of the program at the school. Finally, if you have uniform items that your child has grown out of (and no younger siblings to
grow into it) please consider donating uniform to the Second Hand Shop. We are in great need of skirts at the moment.

The 2014 Maths Horoscope
The following provides a vivid vision into the future!!
Your future!
And you didn’t even realize that Maths was part of it! Well then buckle up, for you are in for another
amazing year of Maths.
The Maths Department provides great opportunities for students to engage with their learning inside
and out of the classroom. We are hoping that students will respond in an overwhelmingly positive
fashion, as they did in 2013. The early signs are good!
Outside of the classroom some of the activities that students can engage in are as follows:
Maths Club
The Maths Club is running again in 2014. It is held in H5 every lunch time from 13:15 to 13:45. The
Club provides a supervised and structured environment in which students can complete class work or
homework. Attendance has been up on previous years. Some days there have been upwards of 25 stu-
dents. A number of students have already volunteered to be Maths tutors. Acting as a tutor refines
your understanding and therefore acts as an excellent extension activity. So congratulations to the
students that have volunteered so far: Sabrina Poon, Shelley Zhou, Lawrence Leung, Aaron Chan and
Minjie Ye.
Competitions
Students will be provided with the opportunity to participate in a number of competitions.
“The Don’t Say Eleven” competition is a whirlwind event, staged at lunchtime, where students have to
plot, conspire and strategize to ensure that they are not the one who says the number 11. Students
are eliminated until one person is left standing!

Activity Weeks
Each day during Numeracy Week students will be able to gather at lunchtime to exercise their white

2014 will consist of the Paper Tower competition, the Bloxorz ITC gaming challenge, the title of Su-
preme Sudoku Sensei Master, the Maths Science race and lastly the Number Target Challenge.
In addition during Education Week the Maths Department will run a full program of activities. The
likely activities will be The Straw Tower competition, TicTacToe Sudden Death, The Toothpick Puzzle,
the Rubik’s Cube race and lastly the Maths Olympiad.
MangaHigh
Every student from Year 7 to Year 11 General Maths has access to MangaHigh via http://
www.mangahigh.com/. This is a great website that allows students to practice their Maths skills even
when no homework has been set. Alternatively they can play the great (strongly maths based) inter-
active games which can be found on the site.
So make the most of the opportunities that have been created and have fun. Some photos from last
year’s activities can be found below.
Thanks to all of the Maths staff who make the program of events during the year possible.

Working Bee Thank You Our first Working Bee for 2014 was held last Sunday. Thanks to all the willing workers, we now have a
large vegetable garden to start planting.
The vegie garden will be planted by the Environment Group, and the produce will be used by the Food
Tech students.
Working Bee helpers included: Deb Longman, Stephen To, Melissa White, Oliver White, Jessica White,
Dominic White, David Yates, Mitchell Yates, Andrew & Christina Moore, Carolyn & Simon Nette, Jane
Richards, Tim Dalton, Megan Thompson, Fiona Field and Peter Hives.
The helpers not only moved 10 cubic metres of soil (that’s a BIG pile!), but also planted out an empty
garden bed, while Megan Thompson, the School Chaplain, did some further planting in the Memorial
Garden.
The next Working Bee dates are: Sunday 4 May, Sunday 24 August and Sunday 26 October.

Can’t find the Music Dept’s smaller music groups above ?
The smaller groups in the Music Program wear a mutually-agreed code (between student and group
conductor) from the above list. Some choose to wear an additional accessory eg: scarf or tie etc
Chaplaincy also runs a ‘second-hand shop’ for used garments. The second hand shop is open every
Tuesday morning from 8.15am to 8.45am.

Thank you to all parents who attended our recent Compass Information Evenings.
Parent feedback is valuable to us and we are following up on requests made in terms of photos, emails
and the view when there are multiple students in the one family—to name a few.
The information outlined below was shared on the night and we would like to share it with those who
were unable to attend.
1. Learning Tasks and Reporting
Learning Tasks Grades
This then becomes the following in our Compass Reports
EX 90, 95, 100
VG 85, 80
G 60, 65, 70, 75
S 50, 55
L 30, 35, 40, 45

vals and will reflect the work completed in
each 6 week cycle.
Depending on the curriculum delivered in
this time frame a report may reflect one or
more Learning Tasks.
Please note that the grade allocated to a
VCE learning task will reflect both work re-
quirements and school assessed coursework
if this has been completed during this cycle.
2. Reporting Schedule
3. End of Semester Reports
Years 7- 10
At the end of each semester a summative AusVELS Report will
be generated which will indicate the level of achievement in each
domain.
This information is drawn from the Learning Tasks assessments
where these have been made. Please note that reporting to
AusVELS need not occur in each Learning Task a student is
asked to complete.
VCE
The end of semester report will provide an ‘S’ or ‘N’ for each VCE
subject studied.

We are now well and truly into Term 1 and you will have noticed that in the Café we have
made some slight changes to our stock. We are now selling a wide variety of Schweppes drinks and Tru Blu Drinks. This includes flavoured mineral waters, flavoured iced tea and
low joule carbonated drinks. The Oak Milk continues to be a huge favourite and this is gen-erally because of the low prices we have managed to maintain for our students. Come and have a look at the different flavoured milks on offer with prices starting at $1.50 for a
300ml flavoured Oak.
In a fantastic achievement for the Café, we have been presented with a “Certificate of Commendation” from the City of Whitehorse (see below) for achieving Five Stars in our as-
sessment with a perfect score of 100%. The Five Star Food Hygiene Assessment system operates within the legal requirements of the Food Act 1984 and National Foods Standards Code and aims to Improve and maintain food safety standards within Whitehorse. A FIVE
STAR rating demonstrates Best Practice that is above and beyond legislative requirements. This is the SECOND Year in a row that the Café has been awarded FIVE Stars!!
Keep an eye out for our menu for Term 2, coming soon, which is to include favourites such
as Homemade Soup, Hot Roast Beef/Lamb Rolls with gravy, Fried Rice, Shepherds Pie and
Lasagna – just to name a few!! If you have any special requests, please, drop in and see
us as we would love to hear your suggestions.
