SSPC Update NSRP SP & C Panel
12 March 2015 Charleston SC
Arcino Quiero-Chair Michael Damiano-SSPC
Topics
• Standards Update • NBPI Update • Shipboard Organizational Level Training • DoD funding for Training Courses
Standards Update
• PA 2 (2015) • AB 1 (2015) • Wet Abrasive Blast Cleaning Standards (new) • Corrosion Planning Standard (new) • Thermal Spray Application Standard (rev) • SP-1 (rev) • PCP Surface Preparation
PA 2 (2015 revision)
• What’s the same – everything about measurements – Number of readings per spot – Number of spots per area – Averaging of spot measurements – Coating Thickness Restriction Levels – Default minimum and maximum for spot readings
(80%/120%)
PA 2 (2015 revision) • What’s new:
– Use certified standards (NIST plates) to verify Type I gage is reading accurately prior to use, unless gage mfr. permits use of certified plastic shims.
– Use measured shims (thickness imprinted by gage mfrs) to adjust gage for surface characteristics of the steel
– Type I gages that do not read accurately cannot be used unless they are repaired and recalibrated by the manufacturer
PA 2 (2015 revision) • What’s new
– Only record Spot and Area measurements, not individual gage readings unless otherwise specified
– Figure has been inserted to illustrate procedure for determining extent of nonconforming areas
– Clarification of language in Appendix 7 (for exteriors of pipe) and addition of an example for calculating measurement frequency
AB-1 (2015 revision) • What’s the same:
– Definitions of Grades and Classes – Required tests and test frequency – Documentation requirements – Who performs what tests
• What’s changed: – EPA Test Method 7500 for crystalline silica – Requirements for qualification of testing labs no
longer requires NACLA or ILAC accreditation
Mineral Abrasive
Joint Standard for Corrosion Prevention and Control Planning
• Objective – Provide standardized framework for supplier plans to control corrosion on supplied products and structures.
• Current status: – Task Group developing first draft – Next meeting March 18 at NACE Corrosion 2015
in Dallas – Canvass for reviewers expected late March 2015
Thermal Spray Standard (CS 23:00) (revision in progress)
• Current Status – Two ballots have been issued, working on
resolving negatives – Tri-Society Committee of 3 cooperating SDOs must
approve revised draft and determine if reballot is necessary
• Expected completion date: November 2015
SP-1 (revised 2015) • Current Status: SSPC Board of Governors
conducting final review • What’s changed:
– Expanded scope to “metallic substrates” – Added definition of “visible” contaminants – Added non-mandatory notes describing additional
verification methods for nonvisible contaminants (black light, water break, ISO dust, wipe test)
• Expected release date: April 15, 2015
Use & Retention of Pre-Construction Primers on Steel in Shipbuilding
• Objective: Provide guidance on reasons for use and retention of PCPs – Types of PCPs used and where – Secondary SP processes used if PCPs are
retained on substrate
• Current status: Committee has been formed, draft in preparation for ballot
• Expected release: June 2016
NBPI Update • Reflects lessons-learned since 2010 by NAVSEA
personnel • Updated Standard Item information (to FY 16) • Updates changes in commonly used industry
standards since 2010 • Adds new coating materials now approved by
NAVSEA • Updates latest inspection equipment available • New & updated photos • Updated Appendices
Shipboard Org. Level Training
• One-day lecture and one-day hands-on • Intended for sailors with limited corrosion-
control background • Topics include corrosion basics, surface
preparation by solvent, hand/power-tool cleaning (SP 1, 2, 3, 11, and VIS 3
• Overview of NSTM 631 and 634 requirements for hand/power tool cleaning and brush/roll coating application
Department of Defense (DoD) Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office
DoD CPO is providing tuition-free SSPC courses in corrosion prevention and
mitigation to DoD personnel.
The funding is available for the following personnel:
• DoD • Army • Navy • Air Force • Marine Corps
Funding Guidelines
• Funding is on a first come first serve basis. • All other costs (labor / travel / per diem, etc)
are to be covered by the activity. • Only the cost of the course and exam are
funded under the contract.
DoD Funded Courses
• For a list of courses that are DoD Funded go to:
