Body
Body structure
Materials used:
Cold-formed steel
Hot-formed steel
Aluminium sheet
Aluminium sections
Cast aluminium parts
The modular longitudinal matrix, MLB for short, forms the basis for the body. This is a platform system where the drive train (engine and gearbox) is mounted longitudinally in the direction of travel.
The Touareg is the first Volkswagen vehicle to have a body assembled using a mixed construction. Mixed construction means that the body does not just consist of cold-formed and hot-formed steel, but also of aluminium sheet, aluminium sections and cast aluminium parts.
9
Using aluminium as a material in the body structure is new for Volkswagen. The aim during development was to reduce the vehicle weight while meeting the greater requirements for body rigidity and vehicle safety. Using aluminium has allowed us to reduce the weight considerably compared with the previous model.
New joining techniques are being used in production to enable us to join the different materials used in the body.

Auxiliary coolant heaterThe Touareg can be optionally fitted with an auxiliary coolant heater from Eberspächer. The auxiliary coolant heater with the designation “Hydronic 2” can be used as a supplementary heater and as an auxiliary heater. The auxiliary heater has the task of heating the vehicle interior. This involves hot coolant flowing only through the heat exchanger while the combustion engine is not running. The heater coolant shut-off valve N279 blocks the supply to the combustion engine coolant circuit. The supplementary heater has the task of increasing the vehicle heating output in vehicles with a high degree of efficiency and consequently low heat output. If a V6 TDI engine is installed in the Touareg, it will come with the Hydronic 2 as standard in some (cold) countries purely as a supplementary heater without the auxiliary heater function.
Fitting locations of components
The components for the auxiliary coolant heater, like the heater unit, the heater coolant shut-off valve N279 and the coolant circulation pump V50 are located at the front right on the longitudinal member behind the headlight. The auxiliary heater aerial R182 is located on the roof and the remote control receiver for auxiliary coolant heater R149, which is connected to it, is located behind the rear right side trim. The metering pump V54 is located on the front right of the fuel tank.

You will find further details on the auxiliary coolant heater in Self-study Programme no. 503 “Supplementary heating systems Hydronic B5S-F and D5S-F”.
28
Heating and air conditioning
Heater unit system connections
The heater unit is the central main component of the auxiliary coolant heater. It has the following system connections:
Fuel systemFuel is pumped by the metering pump V54 from the fuel tank to the auxiliary coolant heater via a separate line (fuel supply).
Coolant circuitThe auxiliary coolant heater is incorporated into the coolant circuit via the two coolant connections.
Air supplyThe air required for combustion is drawn in through the combustion air intake by the combustion air blower V6 in the heater unit.
Electrical systemThe auxiliary coolant heater is connected to the electrical system via the electrical connections for the auxiliary heater control unit J364. The control unit is a CAN bus component.

Technical features
The auxiliary coolant heater has a maximum output of 5,000 watts. While the auxiliary coolant heater in the Touareg 2011 worked with two heating levels, there are now four heating levels in the new Touareg. The heating output of the individual levels is as follows:• Full load 5.0kW• Large 3.9kW• Medium 2.9kW• Small 1.8kW (in auxiliary heater mode only)
The different levels are regulated automatically by the auxiliary coolant heater according to the coolant temperature. The higher the heating output, the higher the cycle frequency of the metering pump V54 and the higher the speed of the combustion air blower V6.
The Touareg can be heated or ventilated. The switch-over is performed automatically by the onboard supply control unit J519 on the basis of the ambient temperature, interior temperature and the set target temperature. The system always heats when the temperature is set to “High” and it always ventilates when the temperature is set to “Low”.
29

In supplementary heater mode, the heater unit is not operated by the customer, but instead additionally heats the coolant when the combustion engine is running. If the “Automatic supplementary heater” function is activated in the Infotainment system air conditioning menu, the auxiliary coolant heater is used as a supplementary heater when the ambient temperature is low.In this case, the ambient temperature must be below -10°C for the Touareg with petrol engine and below +5°C for the Touareg with diesel engine.
30
Heating and air conditioning
Programming
The auxiliary heater can be programmed for two different departure times. The switch-on time and operating duration of the auxiliary heater is then determined by the onboard supply control unit according to the ambient temperature and the required interior temperature. When programming, it is important that the date and time in the vehicle are set correctly.
The auxiliary heater can be programmed over six days in advance plus the remaining time on the day of programming.
You can program an operating duration between 10 minutes and 60 minutes in 10-minute steps. The set operating duration is only used for starting with the remote control or with the instant heating button.
Remote control
The range of the remote control can be several hundred metres in favourable conditions. This depends greatly on the terrain, buildings, weather and electronic sources of interference, for example, mobile telephones or two-way radios.Up to four remote control units can be utilised. If a fifth remote control is used, the functions for the first one are deleted.

Electrical system
Power supply system A 48-V electrical subsystem can be installed in addition to the usual 12-V electrical system.
12-volt electrical system
Only one AGM battery (Absorbent Glass Mat) with a capacity between 68 and 105 Ah is installed.
The main fuse carrier and the battery isolation igniter N253 are mounted on the positive terminal of the vehicle battery. The battery monitor control unit J367 is located on the vehicle battery negative terminal.
48-V electrical subsystem
Vehicles with electromechanical roll stabilisation have a 48-V electrical subsystem in addition. This is necessary due to the increased electrical power requirement.
The 12-V DC voltage is converted to 48 V DC by the voltage converter A7. The storage capacitor for the 48 V electrical system C31 is charged. It supplies the necessary power for the electromechanical roll stabilisation as required.

Internet connectionsVolkswagen is offering users the option of being constantly “online” with the Touareg. To make this possible, the data bus diagnostic interface (gateway) J533 has been expanded with an online module and an e-SIM has been integrated into the control unit 1 for information electronics J794. This allows users to connect the Touareg to the Internet even without an external SIM card, Bluetooth pairing or a mobile WLAN hotspot.
Two separately billed access points (APN) to the mobile Internet are set up via the e-SIM in the control unit J794. • The Internet Radio and Hybrid Radio services as well as the vehicle’s internal WLAN hotspot transfer data via
APN2. The customer needs to purchase data packages for the vehicle in order to use these functions. • All other Guide & Inform services (Satellite Maps, Online Map Update, Weather etc.) transfer data via APN1.
Volkswagen covers the data volume used. Customers do not pay any further costs.
The Security & Service services, for example, locking and unlocking, run via J533. The emergency call service also uses J533. A battery has been integrated for this purpose. If the 12-V electrical system fails, this battery will temporarily take over the voltage supply to the gateway and the system components involved to allow an emergency call to be made.
System overview
The apps and online functions vary from country to country and according to the equipment level. Please refer to the information page at www.volkswagen-carnet.com to find out which Car-Net functions will be available in your market.
