Indian River Lagoon – Sales Tax Vote in November – What will it do?

On August 9th, the Brevard County Commis-sion voted 5-0 to let the people decide on a plan to provide a ½ cent sales tax to clean up the In-dian River Lagoon. This, despite Commissioner Infantini doing what she said she wouldn’t for months. She then abruptly left the meeting with county business still on the agenda.

There was overwhelming support for the tax. At least 250 people attended, mostly in Blue Shirts; 50 plus speakers for the lagoon.

The tax would last 10 years, estimated to generate $34 million per year for a 10 year total of $340 million. The county would negotiate municipal revenue sharing agreements to ensure all money is in a central fund for Lagoon Projects. Lagoon Projects would have a Volunteer Citizen Oversight Committee consisting of scientists, technology entrepreneurs, economists/fi nance, real estate interests, education/outreach, tourism/nature-based tourism, and Lagoon advocacy.

The League of Cities would nominate half of the Committee, Board of County Commissioners would nominate the other half of the Committee.

So what does a sales tax do to you? There are many exemptions: grocery food, prescrip-tion drugs, machinery, raw materials, utilities & fuel, medical devices, medical services, gen-eral occasional sales, parts purchased for use in performing service under optional maintenance contracts, transportation services, most canned software, digital products and general trade-ins.

What will be on the ballot in November?Caption: Save Our Indian River Lagoon ½

fi nancing, planning, constructing, maintaining and operating capital improvements and capital maintenance projects and programs designed to improve water quality, fi sh, wildlife and marine habitat, remove muck and reduce pollution, shall an ordinance be approved levying a ½ cent sales tax for ten years and requiring deposit of all rev-enue to a Save Our Lagoon Trust Fund solely for

such projects, with citizen committee oversight and annual independent audits?

local projects planned to meet water quality targets and improve the health, productivity, aes-thetic appeal and economic value of the lagoon. Implementation of these projects is contingent upon funding raised through the referendum. This referendum funding would also allow the County to leverage additional dollars in match funding from state and federal grant programs because the IRL ecosystem is valued not only in Florida, but also nationally. Funding implementation of this plan would help to restore this national treasure. Lagoon ecosystem response may lag several years behind completion of nutrient reductions; however, major steps must begin now to advance progress on the long road to recovery.

In the development of this plan, Subject Mat-

ter Experts were consulted to provide feedback on the plan elements. The experts all agreed that there is a "critical mass" of nutrient reductions that must be achieved to see a benefi cial result in the IRL. This critical level of nutrient reduction will be achieved through the implementation of the projects in this plan. During plan develop-ment, it was estimated that the benefi t of restoring the lagoon has a present value of $6 billion and a cost of $300 million. Therefore, implement-ing this plan to restore the IRL is an excellent investment in the future of Brevard County’s community and economy with a benefi t to cost ratio of 20:1.

In order to restore the lagoon’s balance, Bre-vard County seeks to accelerate implementation of a multi-pronged approach to reduce pollutant and nutrient inputs to the lagoon from fertilizer, reclaimed water from WWTFs, septic systems, and stormwater; remove the accumulation of muck from the lagoon bottom; restore water-fi ltering oysters and related lagoon ecosystem services; and monitor progress to respond to

changing conditions, technologies and new infor-mation by amending the plan to substitute actions that will be most successful and cost effective for signifi cantly improving the health, productivity, and natural resilience of the IRL.

The portfolio of projects in this plan were selected as the most cost-effective suite of op-tions to achieve water quality and biological targets for the lagoon system. Investment has been distributed among a set of project types with complimentary benefi ts to reduce future risk of failure. Nearly two-thirds (2/3) of the effort and expense is directed toward muck removal to address decades of past excess nutrient loading. Approximately one-third (1/3) of the effort is split among multiple efforts to reduce incoming load to healthy levels, restore natural fi ltration, measure success, and respond with annual plan updates. The plan projects have been prioritized and ordered to deliver improvements to the la-goon in the most benefi cial spatial and temporal sequence. The implementation of this plan is expected to result in a healthy IRL system.”

I think this is an important issue that we need to address, and I think you can at a certain degree control your spending, so going this way will ensure even tourists will be helping provide funds for the lagoon.

Brevard Indian River Lagoon CoalitionWe have a new group to champion the La-

goon. The Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coali-tion (BIRLC) are dedicated, passionate folk who are determined to see that the County’s plan will go forward. They will monitor the County to make sure this plan will not have funds used for

Good Day, cont.purposes other than voters expect, like they were on Amendment 1.

Visit their website, www.CitizensForTheLa-goon.org. Sign up. There are no membership fees for anyone who is willing to sign a pledge that the severe pollution cannot be allowed to continue; to eliminate or substantially reduce the use of fer-tilizers, pesticides and other pollutants; to build awareness and knowledge of the Lagoon with regard to pollutants, storm water, septic systems and faulty sewage facilities; to actively encour-age our government offi cials to take bold steps to restore the Lagoon to a healthy estuary; and support and vote for candidates who demonstrate that Lagoon restoration is a top priority.

That’s not asking a lot. Fishing, eco-tourism, restaurants, hotels, and almost all shoreline/La-goon dependent business will be fi nished if we cannot work together to clean up the Lagoon. Brevard will lose $4 billion annually economi-cally if the Indian River Lagoon dies.

This horrifi c situation is at least 50 years in the making. We must keep looking forward, with the spirit that “Let’s get this done.” This is

our Lagoon. Help the Lagoon for nature’s sake. When we ignore her, she will eventually come back and ruin our lives.

We must all come together on this in No-vember.

to maintain their system and nothing else. The county says it will cost between $100,000 to return it to a ditch (if illegal sheds are removed from their right of way), or $300,000 to repair the drainage pipe. County said they working a full schedule (but other parts of county), and everyone is saying there are a number of rusted out pipes, so I guess this homeowner has to suf-fer until they fi nally get to it, IF THE COUNTY EVER GETS TO IT.

Clean Water? We have a chance. According to an August

11, 2016 story in the Miami Herald by Mary El-len Klas, the new Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) rules to allow an increased allowance in cancer causing chemicals in our water may not happen for a while. Luckily, the Seminole Tribe of Florida has sued to keep the rules from being forwarded to the Environmental

Protection Agency (EPA) for review. According to the article, “The Seminole Tribe says new rules for toxin levels in drinking water could endanger members’ lives.” The article went on to say, “The Seminole Tribal members’ subsistence consump-tion rate is over 140 grams of fi sh per week.” The legal complaint says, “That is 5 times greater than the consumption rate used for the proposed rule.” If that is the case, one fi fth of 140 grams is 28 grams. That is less than one ounce of fi sh per week. That’s 1/16 of a pound or just 2 or 3 shrimp per week or 4 to 6 bites of fi sh. I know I eat more fi sh than that.

The other issue is the vote. According to an-other article in the Tampa Bay Times on August 14, “The governor's Environmental Regulation Commission approved the new water qual-ity rule on a narrow 3-2 vote.” The article also said, “DEP moved up the vote on the proposed rule from September to today without offering a reason. The Environmental Regulation Com-mission hasn't met since December and two of the seven positions — the representative for the environmental community and another represent-ing local government — have been left vacant

by Gov. Rick Scott.” Why let these new rules go in effect when we are fi nding so many issues caused by current and previous state and local levels of government. The Tampa Bay Times also said, “The rule updates the state's water quality standards for the fi rst time since 1992 by allow-ing for 23 toxics, including 18 carcinogens, to be discharged from industrial polluters at higher levels. The chemicals are among those released by oil and gas drilling companies, dry cleaners, pulp and paper producers, electricity plants, wastewater treatment plants and agriculture. Un-der the new rules, at least 10 chemicals will now be allowed to be discharged into drinking water sources in amounts that exceed current drinking water standards.”

Monthly Tax UpdateNow is the time to make or make plans to fund

your Individual Retirement Arrangement (IRA). This means you may have questions about IRAs and your taxes. Here are some IRS tax tips about saving for retirement using an IRA.

Age rules. You must be under age 70½ at the end of the tax year in order to contribute to a tra-ditional IRA. There is no age limit to contribute to a Roth IRA.

Compensation rules. You must have taxable earned wages to contribute to an IRA. This in-cludes income from wages and salaries and net self-employment income. It also includes tips, commissions, bonuses and alimony. If you are married and fi le a joint tax return, only one spouse needs to have compensation in most cases.

When to contribute. You can contribute to an IRA at any time during the year. To count for 2015, you must contribute by the due date of your tax return. This does not include extensions. That means most people must contribute by April 15, 2016. If you contribute between Jan. 1 and April 15, make sure your plan sponsor applies it to the year you choose (2015 or 2016).

Contribution limits. In general, the most you can contribute to your IRA for 2015 is the smaller of your taxable compensation for the

year or $5,500. If you will be age 50 or older at the end of 2015, the maximum you can contrib-ute increases to $6,500 or earned wages. If you contribute more than these limits, an additional tax will apply. The added tax is 6 percent of the excess amount that you contributed unless you recharacterize the contribution before April 15th.

Taxability rules. You won’t pay income tax on funds in your traditional IRA until you start tak-ing distributions from it. Qualifi ed distributions from a Roth IRA are tax-free if made after you reach the age of 59 1/2 or it’s your basis.

Deductibility rules. You may be able to de-duct some or all of your contributions to your traditional IRA. Use the worksheets for the Form 1040A or Form 1040 instructions to fi gure the amount that you can deduct. You may claim the deduction on either form. You may not deduct contributions to a Roth IRA.

Saver’s Credit. If you contribute to either IRA you may also qualify for the Retirement Saver’s Credit. The credit could reduce some of your taxes. Use Form 8880, Credit for Qualifi ed Retirement Savings Contributions, to claim the credit. You can fi le Form 1040A or 1040 to claim the Saver’s Credit.

Next, it’s time to check your Federal tax withholding to prevent a surprise when you do

your taxes. Each year, many people get a larger refund or pay more than they expect. Some fi nd they owe a lot more tax than they thought they would. If this has happened to you, review your situation to prevent a tax surprise. Did you get married? Have a child? Changes in income? Life events can have a major impact on your taxes. Having the correct amount being withheld is most important. You need to review and update your Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certifi cate. Your employer will use the form to fi gure the amount of Federal income tax to with-held from your pay. You may use the IRS With-holding Calculator on IRS.gov to help you fi ll out the form. This tool is easy to use and it’s available 24/7. For more information, see Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax. You can get it on IRS.gov/forms at any time.

This is very brief overview. For details and specifi c assistance in applying the general in-formation in this article, call us at your earliest convenience or contact your tax advisor.

This month’s Port St. John restaurant review is on the China Wok, located in the Publix shop-ping center on US1. If you’re looking for good quality Chinese food that’s reasonably priced with super-fast service, then the China Wok is the place. The portions are large and in most cases you can get 2 servings from one dish.

The hours are convenient. They are open Monday through Saturday, 11am to 11 pm, and Sundays 12 pm to 10 pm. We generally call in our orders and they’re ready for pickup within 15-20 minutes. Each dish appears to be prepared fresh since the food is piping hot and the vegetables aren’t overcooked.

For this visit, my wife and I both got combi-nation dinners. My wife ordered the Chicken Lo Mein and I got the Pork Lo Mein. The combina-tion dinners include an egg roll and fried rice. The egg rolls are great, so we usually order extras. Both of our dinners had an ample amount of meat with the Lo Mein noodles. In fact, it contained more meat than most other restaurants.

On this visit we also ordered a side of Won-ton soup, which comes with a good portion of

Wonton strips (chips). It was good, but the pasta wrap was a little undercooked.

We also ordered a small Sesame Chicken served with a side of white rice. I’m generally not someone who likes sweet dishes, but this dish had a good balance of savory with the sweet. Tra-ditionally, Sesame Chicken dinners are chunks of boneless chicken, breaded, fried and covered in a glaze of sweet sauce served over a bed of white rice.

All in all, if you’re in hurry and want large portions of great Chinese food at a reasonable price, China Wok is the place. And who knows, you may even get the winning lottery numbers in your fortune cookie.

GOOD SAMARITANA Sunday school teacher was telling her class

the story of the Good Samaritan. She asked the class, “If you saw a person lying on the roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?”

A thoughtful little girl broke the hushed si-lence, “I think I'd throw up.”

Lower Your Electric BillWe continue to experience extreme, record-

setting summer heat, which means we’re all using more energy to keep our homes cool. Because A/C units run twice as long in the summer than during cooler months and account for more than half of your energy bill, you likely will notice your summer bills are higher than normal. Now is the time to take control of your energy use.

Ways to save energy and money:- You can save energy and money by increasing

the temperature in your home.- We recommend setting your thermostat to 78

degrees when you’re home and 82 degrees when you leave.- With every degree you increase, you can save

about 5% on your monthly cooling costs.Visit FPL.com/EasyToSave to help you fi nd

even more ways to save.Special Thanx to FPL for providing this in-

formation. They have an Ask the Energy Expert blog online for questions about how you can save energy and money. Learn about quick and effective ways to help lower your bill at www.FPLblog.com.

~ Rose PadrickWaiting in line at the grocery store, I noticed

a beautiful 3- or 4-year-old child and her mother in a battle of wills. I turned my head and tried not to smile when the child grabbed a candy bar from the display at checkout. Mom took it away, whispering, “No, no, Kimberly, no candy before dinner.”

Undaunted, Kimberly grabbed another. Shak-ing her head, mom tried, “Mommy said ‘no.’ Put it back.”

Kimberly grabbed another. Sticking to her guns, mom raised her voice just a little with, “Stop that and give me the candy!”

Kimberly popped the whole thing - paper and all - into her mouth.

Stifl ing a smile, I admired this young mother keeping her cool, not even raising her voice. That she was able to do this without pulling out the Secret Weapon was impressive, but it got me to wondering if we have become such a splintered society that it’s not being passed down any more.

The Secret Weapon I’m referring to is the mother’s scowl. Fathers have scowls also, but because they scowl most of the time anyway, it is not near as effective as mom’s.

Dad instinctively scowls when three kids and a dog run between him and the T.V. just as someone important is about to do something important in a football game, or basketball game, or wrestling match.

Mothers instinctively know, to be effective, scowls must be used sparingly, on an as-needed basis. Moms do not waste the scowl on non-life-threatening acts. A kid will - and has - gotten

away with only a time-out and a warning for fi lling the toilet with little plastic army men, or banishment to the bedroom with out fi nishing dinner for launching peas from her spoon at her sister.

But a mother walking into a room just as one offspring is about to whack another with a toy fi re truck, or baby doll, or potted plant will produce a whopper of a scowl.

Children instinctively know to freeze the second they see or feel Mom’s scowl. I don’t mean the everyday, “someone-stole-my-parking-space” scowl. I mean the full-face, one eyebrow raised, one pointing downward, angry-eyes-boring-holes-right-through-you kind.

According to my children, they stopped whatever they were doing and dropped to their knees in prayer when hit with the scowl. I don’t remember much dropping or praying, but I do believe several of them still have all their limbs and faculties thanks to a well-timed scowl. It got us into and out of grocery stores, malls and childless friends’ homes with minimal damage to body and structures.

I might have a pretty good scowl, but my mother was the Queen of Scowldom. Her scowl could stop a pack of rabid pit bulls. If accom-panied by pursing of her lips, trees within a one-mile radius dropped their leaves. I could feel her scowl at a friend’s house three blocks away when I was supposed to have been home half-hour earlier.

There is some disagreement between my brother and me over who was the object of most of Mom’s scowls. I’m sorry Steve’s memory is so far gone, but then he is the one that told Mom

I threw him in the river in his Sunday clothes — he clearly jumped in himself.

He also caused me to be the recipient of not only the mother of all scowls, but a smack as well, when he ripped all my comic books and told Mom I just walked up and hit him for no reason. He repeated the hitting for no reason thing quite a few times during our childhood, as I remember.

His memories differ from mine in almost all areas, but we both agree we wish mom was still here to set us on the right path with just a scowl.

The morning of Monday, May 9th, 57 year old, John Parker, Junior was rushed to the hospital. Seizing and without control of his body for the fi rst time in his life, he would be soon facing a fate no one wishes for. His family and friends would quickly re-ceive the unimaginable diagnosis and emotionally charged updates from his wife of almost sixteen years, Barbara.

John suffered what all thought to be a painful and scary stroke amidst a seizure - his next reality even more inconceivable. By quick medical observation it proved to be one of the most gut-wrenching and heart-breaking condi-tions of all possible outcomes. John has been diagnosed with Glioblastoma. The cancer has morphed into a stage four level. This cancer is not curable. Literally the most lethal type of cancer, John is pushing forward and fi ghting back. After all, he has three amazing grandchildren to play with and a bass guitar to rock the inside of his church with. He has a beautiful wife to dote on - his "till death do us part" being forced to retreat. John has a wedding to attend next year, church services to be a part of and a life full of laughter in which he refuses to let go this easily.

Since the harrowing morning of his seizure,

John has been monitored by neurologists who specialize in this form of cancer and treated ac-cordingly. Although tired and weak, which is to be expected, 95% of the tumors have been removed. Radiation and chemotherapy are being conducted to combat this disease. These types of procedures are costly and uncomfortable. John

is no longer working and is without insurance. Bills are mounting and the correlating stress has been compacted into this surreal reality.

With your contributions, you are allowing us to keep John as comfortable as pos-sible. We cherish every sec-ond we have with him! We can't thank everyone enough for all the love and support

we have received during this time.In the words of John Parker, Junior -"Peace

Car Jacked in FloridaAn elderly Floridian called 911 on his cell

phone to report that his car has been broken into. He is hysterical as he explains his situation to the dispatcher: “They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the ac-celerator!' he cried.

The dispatcher said, “Stay calm... An offi cer is on the way.”

A few minutes later, the offi cer radios in, “Disregard,” he says, “He got in the back-seat by mistake.”

Counties score a ‘big win,’ can proceed with federal All Aboard Florida lawsuit

- By Lisa Broadt of TCPalmIn a major victory for All Aboard Florida op-

ponents, a federal judge on Tuesday said Martin and Indian River counties have legal standing to proceed with a lawsuit against the Miami-to-Orlando passenger railroad service.

After reviewing thousands of pages of evi-dence, “the court concludes that the counties have now met their burden of demonstrating standing,” U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper said in a 39-page memorandum released late Tuesday.

If the decision — which Cooper described as a “close call” — had gone the other way, the counties’ cases against the U.S. Department of Transportation and All Aboard Florida would have been dismissed.

All Aboard Florida — a $3.1 billion project — plans to begin running 16 round trips daily

between Miami and Orlando by late 2017.Still, Martin and Indian River counties were

not entirely successful: Cooper agreed to let the counties argue violations of the National Envi-ronmental Policy Act, the National Historic Pres-ervation Act and the Department of Transporta-tion Act, but said he was not convinced that there might have been violations of Internal Revenue Service code and dismissed that argument.

Martin County Attorney Michael Durham said he was pleased the county’s lawsuit will be able to proceed.

“This is a big win, and goes to show that if you stick with an issue, the truth will come out,” Durham said.

All Aboard Florida offi cials did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.

Cooper’s decision follows more than 18 months of court proceedings, including a 3½-hour court hearing June 30 during which All Aboard Florida and the U.S. DOT asked Cooper to dismiss the case.

Martin and Indian River counties fi led the federal lawsuit in early 2015.

The project, according to the counties, would cause irreparable damage to local communities and should not have received preliminary ap-proval for tax-exempt fi nancing before a fi nal federal environmental-impact report came out.

But in June, 2015, Cooper ruled the counties failed to convince him that blocking bond fi nanc-ing would stop the project — the minimum legal standard they needed to meet before he would rule on other aspects of the case — and denied their request to block bond sales.

Tuesday’s ruling reverses that decision.“The court fi nds that invalidating DOT’s deci-

sion to authorize $1.75 billion in (bonds) would signifi cantly increase the likelihood that AAF would not complete Phase II of the project,” Cooper wrote.

Martin County needs to complete further re-view of the decision before it determines its next step, according to Durham.

All Aboard Florida already has begun building its fi rst phase, from Miami to West Palm Beach, with stations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Service there is to begin next year.

Much More Than A Coin!Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer crusader for

the woman suffrage movement in the United States. The U.S. Treasury Department put her portrait on one dollar coins in 1979, the fi rst woman to be so honored. Why?

She helped pave the way for the 19th Amend-ment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote.

Anthony was, in essence, a “freedom fi ghter.” She worked to end slavery in the abolitionist movement. Early on she realized that no one would take women in politics seriously unless they had the right to vote. She was tireless in her efforts to gain the right to vote for women, giving speeches around the country to convince others to support a woman’s right to vote. She even took matters into her own hands in 1872 when she voted in the presidential election illegally. Anthony was arrested and tried unsuccessfully to fi ght the charges. When Anthony died on March 13, 1906, women still did not have the right to vote. It wasn’t until 1920 that the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving all adult women the right to vote, was passed.

Anthony, a Republican, was denied the right to vote and thrown in jail for trying to take part in a presidential ballot. In 2016, the Democratic nominee for President is a woman and women in the U.S. have the right to vote. Whichever party you are, GET OUT AND VOTE!!!

Jerry certainly has the gift of language. The last thing we talked about was when they were going to fi nally get the city water they had been promised for the last 20 years. Mr. Len Beckett has been instrumental in working with the county to have this project completed. Last word was that it should be fi nished by November of this year. The project was approved by the County Commission quite awhile ago and funding has now been released. We will just have to wait and see. I will bring you updates, from time to time, on the adventures of brother Jerry, Ms. Pinky and the acrobatic goat from Jerry’s "Little Piece Of Heaven" in "West By Gosh Canaveral Groves."

I contacted Commissioner Fisher's offi ce and this was the reply........Bill,

Spoke to Ian Golden and he stated that the funds have just been received from HUD. There will be a community meeting at the end of this month and Notice to Proceed for this fi scal year. Permits will have to be obtained and construc-tion is expected to begin in February and be completed in 8 months. This is, of course, if all goes well with no snags along the way.

Ian has been in close contact with Len Beckett, CDBG board member, and keeping him updated on the project.

Have a good weekend. ~ Marcia Newell Legislative Aide to Commissioner Robin FisherIn a recent conversation with one of the D-1

Road and Bridge employees, I inquired about any scheduled work for our ancillary canals here in the Groves. He told me that they were trying to address the problem, but as usual the infamous Mincy Muck Machine was down and there is only one other in the county that was working. I know that the county has done a great job clean-ing and maintaining most of the major canals, but the smaller canals are not accessible to the larger pieces of equipment. Hopefully there will be some relief before the next major storm.

Now that the primaries are over, I hope that your candidate won a place for the General Elec-tion on November 8th. The General Election will probably be the most important election we have had in sometime. The media has been fi lled with

so much negative rhetoric at all levels of gov-ernment, I am reminded of a statement that Jeff Dunham, a popular ventriloquist, said through one of his characters named Walter. "This year's election is like looking down the bar at closing time. Is that all there is?" I never use my article to endorse any party or candidate at any level but the important thing is that you MAKE AN IN-FORMED CHOICE and vote. Be informed about the candidates as well as any referendums that appear on the ballot. YOUR VOTE COUNTS!

Summer Cooks CornerQuick and Easy Spaghetti alla Carbonara

Author: Elizabeth LindemannPrep time: 5 minsCook time: 10 minsTotal time: 15 minsServes: 4-6In a mere 15 minutes and with the greatest of

ease, and only FOUR INGREDIENTS, you can make the most delicious, authentic Spaghetti alla Carbonara ever!

Ingredients1 lb. spaghetti (or fettucini, linguine, or other pasta - whole wheat or regular)2 eggs1 cup shredded parmesan cheese, plus more for servingsalt and pepper, to taste½ cup fresh chopped parsley, or other herbs (optional), plus more for garnish4 oz. pancetta (or bacon)

InstructionsCook pasta until al dente. Reserve 1 cup of the pasta water before draining.Meanwhile, mix together the eggs, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, and parsley (if using) in a small bowl, creating a paste-like consistency. Don't salt too heavily - there is plenty of salt in the pancetta and the parmesan cheese! DO add a hearty amount of fresh cracked black pepper. It gives it a nice kick.In a deep skillet or a large pot, cook the pancetta over medium high heat (If you are using bacon, just cut it up into approximate 1-inch pieces).Cook until meat is browned and fat is rendered.Add the hot pasta to the pancetta and drippings, and turn heat to low. Stir for one minute until pas-ta is covered in the drippings from the pancetta. Now, add the egg and cheese mixture from be-

fore and stir for another minute. The cheese will melt and the eggs will slowly cook, coating each noodle in a creamy layer. While stirring the pasta, gradually add some of the reserved pasta water to create an even thicker, creamier texture. You will probably not need to add the entire cup of water- just add enough until you have a nice, creamy consistency that sticks to every noodle.Serve garnished with extra herbs, parmesan, and black pepper....... A Parting Shot From The Cannon .......

THE TOILET SEATMy wife, Dedei, had been after me for several

weeks to paint the seat on our toilet. Finally, I got around to doing it while Dedei was out. After fi nishing, I left to take care of another matter before she returned.

She came in and undressed to take a shower. Before getting in the shower, she sat on the toilet. As she tried to stand up, she realized that the not-quite-dry epoxy paint had glued her to the toilet seat. About that time, I got home and realized her predicament.

We both pushed and pulled without any suc-cess whatsoever. Finally, in desperation, I undid the toilet seat bolts. Dedei wrapped a sheet around herself and I drove her to the hospital emergency room.

The ER Doctor got her into a position where he could study how to free her (Try to get a men-tal picture of this). Dedei tried to lighten the em-barrassment of it all by saying, "Well, Doctor, I'll bet you've never seen anything like this before."

The Doctor replied, "Actually, I've seen lots of them... I just never saw one mounted and framed."

As always, thank you to all our readers. Be sure and check out our sponsors for without their support, we could not exist. Be sure to read Mau-reen's Good Day, Rose's Room and we welcome Mr. Ken Carson and his Out On the Town. Until next time, Lord willin and the creek don't rise, I remain your servant, - Bill Cannon

Looks like we are getting a Krispy Krunchy Chicken store. It will be located on the south end of the BP Station at the corner of Canaveral Grove's and Grissom Pky. I had a chance to speak with Mr. Miguel Hurtado, Jr. at the store site the other day. Miguel is a corporate trainer for Krispy Krunchy. He told me that the store is scheduled to start selling product within the next month to a month and a half, depending on if things go well

with the licensing. Krispy Krunchy is a franchise operation

out of Louisiana offering Cajun Recipe fried chicken, fi sh, shrimp, buffalo wings, breakfast and other Bayou favorites. I have tried their stores on Dixon, as well as their store at the BP on US 1 and Peachtree in Cocoa. Everything I have tried so far has been very tasty, so if you are looking for something new close to home, be sure to stay tuned.

As I promised from last month, I contacted my brother by another mother, Jerry Wall. Jerry is a dear friend that lives in "West By Gosh Canaveral Groves." I get out to see him every so often but I have to take my truck to get to his place. He is still having some health issues but they are not slowing him down much. We talked

about his critters and a couple of other things that are pertinent to their area of the Groves. As to the hog that took out the air conditioning ducts, she no longer is in the picture, but she was replaced with a new addition which they named Pinky. After a few months guess what Pinky did? A second raid on the vents. What did he expect? Pigs like cool air, too, but she is doing well. As to his herd of goats, only one is left and this one seems to be a gymnast. Jerry says that sometimes he looks out of the window and that goat is on top of their car. Jerry immediately goes out on the front porch and calmly calls to the goat. You #%$@^ *^&% ̂ %$ goat. Get your *&$%# @%# off of the car. Some-times it works, sometimes it dose not. Anyway, the grass is scorched at least ten feet from the porch.
