The Annual General Meeting defi nes the end of another year for the JW&DPA. The Constitution requires that all members of the Management Committee shall retire from Offi ce at the AGM. This year Don Waters retired as President and Nigel Weiss resigned as Vice President. Both Don and Nigel ‘s contribution to the JW&DPA have been acknowledged in previous editions. Graeme Quill has been Treasurer for the last four years and has decided not to nominate again. Graeme thank you for your contribution and guidance of JW&DPA fi nances over the past four years. Jodie Rowland as Vice President, has also decided not to nominate. Jodie thank you for all your support and maintaining the JW&DPA Facebook site. Hopefully there may be time in the future for you to continue to support the JW&DPA.

The signifi cant event for 2013/14 was the Arts by the Sea Festival . A very hard working committee lead by Debbie Stanton delivered a Festival which will be the foundation for a 2015 Festival and supporting community events during 14/15. To support additional events and guide delivery of the 2015 Festival, the plan is to seek approval to expand the Management Committee from four to seven members to include a Community / Events member, a Cabbage Tree Point representative member and a Calypso Bay representative member. Finally, a heads up re the need to renew Association membership from 1 July 2014 and to consider nominating for membership of the Management Committee.

Re the footpath on the northern side of the Jacobs Well – Stapylton Road between Seaview and Cormorant, Cr Donna Gates has committed to pursuing inclusion of the path on a future Whole of City/State program. We will continue to monitor progress to expedite an outcome.

The JW&DPA has made comment on the Gold Coast City Council Draft City Plan2015. In the Policy area there appeared to be a lack of guidance for “change of use” applications to engage the community. The concern was that future developments could proceed without appropriate community engagement. The argument presented was that it is very much a two way street with the community not only making comments on proposals but able to raise issues of economic and social opportunity to facilitate City Plans

The SSN has had a positive response in seeking regular contributors. As a consequence Oliaf Tiemann has been nominated as “Journo of the month” for July. Oliaf, congratulations and enjoy the glory. David Allen

will later be analysed by university scientists to provide an accurate picture of mangrove health.MangroveWatch was developed to monitor and protect our threatened tidal wetlands which are crucial to the sustainability of our marine ecosystems and fi sheries. It is well documented that “no mangroves equals no fi sh!” In addition, mangroves keep our waterways clean, fi ltering land-based run-off and preventing erosion. Mangroves provide habitat for a large diversity of animals including migratory shorebirds and they are great at storing carbon! Worldwide mangroves are being lost at an alarming rate and in Australia, 17% has been lost since 1980! The impact of climate change is already taking its toll. MangroveWatch seeks to educate the public as to why it is important to protect our precious mangroves.

Thanks!I would like to thank all of the JWEEC Advisory Council members that assisted in our annual working bee on Sunday 10 August. We were able to plant over 200 plants in the Behms Rd Forest and plant numerous trays of local seeds ready to germinate for next season. Thanks to all those that took up positions on our committee. It was a great day – good food, good work, good people! JWEEC really appreciate all your assistance

mangrove health as citizen scientists!

Students from Beenleigh, Browns Plains, Park Ridge and Windaroo Valley State High Schools and Kimberly College participated in a two day workshop to learn about mangroves and become citizen scientists! MangroveWatch is an international research program run in partnership with the community developed by world renowned mangrove scientist Dr Norm Duke, who is now based at James Cook University. Trained by a team from JCU, the students and community members learned to use video cameras and GPSs to monitor mangroves in Moreton Bay. Cruising at a comfortable speed of about 6 knots on Jacobs Well Environmental Education Centre dories, the students record the mangrove fringe on video and provide a commentary on the environment. State at this stage and, again, I will keep everyone updated as more information comes forward. With regard to buffers, Council applied “indicative buffers” to the Draft Scheme, but a Ministerial Condition required its removal from the mapping prior to the Scheme being publicly notifi ed. The Strategic Framework of our City Plan makes clear the need to protect nearby sensitive uses from signifi cant impacts, including the use of appropriate separation areas/buffering.

GENERAL - After recent requests from the community, additional bins were installed in the Village. I must admit I had thought they would be decorative – but there has been a workplace health and safety problem and green wheelie bins are now the preferred bin. One new bin has since been removed because it was inappropriately located adjacent to the tables and chairs at the front of the fi sh and chip shop.

Work has been approved for this year for the Boat Ramp Car Park to repair damaged pavement in the area at the top of the boat ramp.

CANE FIELDS - You may be aware of the interest in transitional change for the cane fi elds, prompted by the review of the city’s Planning Scheme. Public notifi cation is over and Council Offi cers are working through over 1200 formal submissions from across the City received during the notifi cation period. I am yet to be made aware of specifi c Division 1 submissions to the Draft Scheme, but understand a “data room” of submissions is being prepared so that representatives may access and understand the requests specifi c to their areas of representation. The future of the sugar cane industry and possible alternative land uses is a major one for our city and one which deserves the full attention of local and state government – both through the adoption of the City Plan and also the State Government’s review of the South East Queensland Regional Plan, which since its introduction has had a bearing on Council’s considerations. Be assured that I will keep you updated as further information becomes available.

QUARRIES - Last week I received a couple of queries concerning the “approval” of three more quarries in the Norwell area and reduced buffers required by Council in the 2015 Draft City Plan. No new quarry approvals have been granted by Council, although at Stapylton, I understand a request for expansion into an adjacent forestry allotment has been requested of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. There has not been any advice forthcoming from the

Hello Everyone, For the month of July Marine Rescue Jacobs Well , were involved in a total of 54

activations, expending 75.4 hours of vessel and crew time and using 1280 litres of fuel. The details are, 10 Breakdown, 1 Fuel, 4 Grounding, 4 Sinking/Sunk, 1 Drifting and 34 Training/Patrol. Total number of crew hours was 252.38 and we thank our volunteer Skippers and Crew for their efforts. Without them and the great support from the public this important service to the Boating Public would not exist.Last month we discussed the importance of a Marine Radio Licence and in this issue I want to remind everyone of the importance of logging on. If you are a member (only $70 per year) we will just ask for a membership number plus your point of departure, destination, time of return and the number of people on board (P.O.B.). If you are not a member we will ask for the above information plus vessel and car details and phone numbers. We then simply ask that you give us a call when you return. The above information is so important if something goes wrong and you need assistance. You can call the base on 55461100 or radio in on VHF 82 or 27MHz 91 as you are leaving the ramp or Marina and we will put you on the log that carries over from one shift to the next if you are out for

V M R JACOBS WELLV M R JACOBS WELL an extended stay. Especially important if you are crossing the bar for an outside fi shing trip but also very useful if you run into problems in the calmer inside waters. See the photo of a vessel being towed across the Jumpinpin Bar that had broken down 2 nautical miles outside of Stradbroke Island.

Marine Rescue Jacobs Well, recently attended the Ormeau Show to promote Boating Safety by handing out information packs, capacity labels, tide guides etc. and to fund raise by selling Raffl e tickets in our car topper tinnie with 5HP Mercury outboard motor. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket. We really do appreciate the support we receive from the community.

Until next month happy boating and do not forget to log on.

In Memory

Today we said goodbye to our dear friend Joyce Wiley who passed way just six days after her 88th birthday. Joyce was a very community minded and tireless worker for Red Cross, member and past President of the Seniors Social Club. Joyce had a real zest for life and touched all who knew her with her sense of fun and wonderful capacity to laugh. She campaigned

with us for a better bus service so that those of us without transport could travel to do our shopping in comfort, with dignity. On learning of Joyce’s passing, our bus driver, Graeme Weir, of Logan Coaches expressed his intent to attend the service. So, with his employers permission brought the bus down to Jacobs Well so we passengers could go too. Graeme had the greatest respect for Joyce as he has for us all. This wonderful gesture was so appreciated by Joyce’s family and we passengers, we thought mention should be made of it in the Sweet Sea News. There is compassion left in our old world after all. Goodbye dear Joyce, we will miss you.....Amy Chandler on behalf of the members of

the Seniors Social Club.

The standout feature of Australian real estate markets over the past two or

three years is just how huge a variance there is between markets. the Gold Coast have continued to be extremely fl at real estate markets.

The good news is that the current market is the best real estate market we have seen in fi ve years and we must take advantage of it. The big issue for every seller is “what am I going to achieve in sale price?” The big question is how do you determine today’s sale price? Let’s have a look at what establishes today’s selling price for your property.

The fi rst is recent sales. This is also largely what a Valuer works with when trying to assess a property’s selling price. the most up to date information about recently sold properties, land sizes, zoning etc. Most of today’s buyers clearly know what the most comparable sales are.

Secondly, what else can they buy for their dollar? The purchase levels of available comparable properties are a very decisive factor.

The third and most infl uential factor of all is market conditions. Every day there are factors infl uencing their feelings, whether it is pulling up at the petrol pump and buying petrol, paying their electricity bill or buying household goods. All of this infl uences our feelings and confi dence in our current economic position, and more importantly, our future.

So what is a property worth? Well, the answer is it’s forever changing, and, therefore, it is nearly impossible to pick exactly what a property will sell for many weeks out from its sale date, because all of the above 3 factors are constantly changing.

A Tailor comp was held on 15-17 August, but the weather was against us. I think some members

were more pleased to see the good soaking rain on the Saturday, rather than a good sized Tailor. Overall a few braved the conditions but only 3 members found the targeted species. Jim Pilling won the men's comp, his Son Jordan won the Juniors, and Lionel Dockery (Pictured here) jagged a good Tailor along the Jacobs Well waterfront. Even Harry F. who spent the night on the beach at South Straddie in terrible conditions had no luck in the surf.

It seems to be the month for AGM's. Our Club held their's on the 24th August after a buffet breakfast at the Tavern. The election of the new Committee saw the return of many of the same faces with a few new ones volunteering as well.

Equine Dentistry

Equine Dentistry is an important part of routine equine health care. It is recommended to have dental checkups every 6 or 12 months depending on your horses needs.

We are now fully equipped with the latest power float and dental equipment, like humans; horses can develop a variety of dental problems which can cause problems gaining weight, dropping food while eating, not grazing properly, difficulty chewing/eating pain, problems while been ridden e.g. Tossing of the head.

A LOOK AT OUR PAST A LOOK AT OUR PASTFernberg : - a vision splendid.

Queensland Government House.Fernberg was erected in 1864-65 on 22 acres (9ha). One of two parcels of land totalling around 40 acres (16 ha) bought from the government in 1860 and 1862. Designed by Benjamin Backhouse, it was built from stone excavated on site, fi nished with cement and lime. At that time, the roads were little better than bush tracks, with hills so steep, negotiation, even by drays, was diffi cult. Around 1870, access was improved by cutting through the steepest hill and fi lling swampland at its foot. The building itself stands about 100 m above sea level. The Heussler family,(who helped to bring out the German settlers of our area and settle them at Bethania before coming to Pimpama area) occupied Fernberg until 1872 when reverses in the sugar industry and the high cost of upkeep forced fore- closure of the property, its sale and contributed to Heussler’s bankruptcy. Fernberg’s next resident was Sir Arthur Palmer, Queensland’s Premier 1870 – 1874. Two successors followed in the early 1880s before on 21 October 1884, Fernberg was purchased by John Stevenson. He extended the building, doubling its size and doubling the grounds by buying adjacent land. He also installed the glass window of Robert The Bruce, King of Scotland 1306-1329 in the main stairway. Sadly he suffered the same fate as Heussler, the fi nancial crisis of the 1890s costing him his fortune and his ownership of Fernberg. Fernberg was to replace the “Old” Government House at Gardens Point in the city which had served since

Queensland’s fi rst governor, Sir George Bowen. That building served vice-regal needs for almost 48 years, before it was outgrown for its offi cial duties, and given to the newly founded University of Queensland in 1909. In 1937, a wing was added to the building, which provided a drawing room, an investiture room and a bedroom suite upstairs. Substantially increasing the fl oor area, the extensions

also incorporated steel beams for the fi rst time. New staff quarters were also built. At the end of WW2, a new garage was constructed and the old coach house removed, and in 1953, addition of a small verandah balcony on the eastern side of the building. Little changed until the late 1980s, when a new guard house was completed, security upgraded, and some internal refurbishing done. All in time for the Australia’s bicentenary and Expo’88 events. The last major building work was in 2001, and small adjustments to the size of the land have been made over the years, for the widening the driveway and the road. The gardens have met natural, functional and ornamental needs over the years. As both a heritage listed property and a the offi cial residence of the Governor, Fernberg continues to play an active role in the civic, political and diplomatic life of Queensland, hosting more than 15,000 visitors each year, ranging from school children to visiting overseas dignitaries.

A woman has twins, and gives them up for adoption. One of them goes to a family in Egypt , and is named 'Ahmal.'The other goes to a family in Spain ; they name him 'Juan.'Years later, Juan sends a picture of himself to his birth mother. Upon receiving the picture, she tells her husband that she wishes she also had a picture of Ahmal. Her husband responds, 'They're twins ! If you've seen Juan, you've seen Ahmal.

A guy walks into a bar with a monkey. The monkey grabbed some olives off the bar and ate them. Then he grabbed some sliced limes and ate them.He then jumped onto the pool table and grabbed one of the balls. To everyone's amazement, he stuck it in his mouth and somehow swallowed it whole. The bartender looked at the guy and said, "Did you see what your monkey just did?""No, what?""He just ate the cue ball off my pool table...whole!"

"Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replied the guy, "he eats everything in sight, don't worry, I'll pay for the cue ball."The guy fi nished his drink, paid his bill, paid for the stuff the monkey ate and left. Two weeks later the guy came back, and had his monkey with him. He ordered a drink and the monkey started running around the bar.The monkey found a maraschino cherry on the bar. He grabbed it, stuck it up his bum, pulled it out, and then ate it.Then the monkey found a peanut, and again stuck it up his bum, pulled it out, and ate it. The bartender asked, "Did you see what your monkey just did?""No, what?" replied the man."Well, he stuck both a maraschino cherry and a peanut up his bum, pulled them out, and ate them!""Yeah, that doesn't surprise me," replied the guy. "He will eat anything, but ever since he had to pass that cue ball, he measures everything fi rst."

SPACE TO

FILL

This know also, that in the last days of personal computing, perilous times shall come.

For people shall be lovers of their own selves, disobedient to the makers of operating systems &

computing devices alike; unthankful, without natural affection for brands or corporations.

Calling the era of Personal Computing at an end may seem premature. Sure, desktop computer sales are in decline, but notebooks and tablets are selling like hotcakes. After all, a notebook or tablet is nothing more than a desktop computer and monitor rolled into a transportable or even handheld package.

But the writing is on the wall! In big, bold letters spelling words like smartphone, cloud computing and augmented reality1. What does it all mean and where will it all end? Who knows, but the major players are quaking in their boots! They all remember getting stoned to Bob Dylan songs, one in particular:

And the fi rst one now Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'.

Old marketing strategies are losing traction. Brand loyalty, while still a factor, is giving way to feature and price driven purchasing behavior. Apple, still the darling of the fashionista set, may hold 40% of the smartphone market in the USA, but worldwide it is slipping badly. In China, the single biggest market by units shipped, Apple is only a minor player! So much so, that the latest Apple product launch saw the introduction of a “cheap” iPhone version. What is the world coming to? You can almost smell the fear in Silicon Valley.

Desktop applications like Microsoft Offi ce, easily the most used productivity software suite in the market and a cash cow for its maker, is being replaced by cloud based services. At present these new services make up only 8% of that market segment, but are predicted to rise to 60% by 2017. The list goes on and the pace of change is accelerating, fast.

All this transformation is, of course, driven by the ubiquitous Internet. The number of nodes connecting to it has grown so much faster than anticipated, that the current transport protocol (TCP/IP v4) is running out of addresses. In other words, the Internet is coming close to being accessed by over 4 billion devices!

While our current crop of Luddite politicians are trying to hold back the tide with their shortsighted National Broad Band rollback, the rest of the world is moving on. It is only a matter of time before countries that have embraced the digital economy wholeheartedly, will leave old fashioned resource driven economies behind.

Virtually all new TV sets are Internet enabled and while fridges and microwaves have not yet seen the same integration, it is only a matter of time. Wireless access points are found in most households and the smartphone is used less for phone calls than all sorts of other things. More important still, phone calls are increasingly being made via Voip2 services like Skype and Viber or replaced altogether by social media site messaging, texting or voice mail. What’s more, smart phone usage is being augmented by wearable eye glasses1 or (oversized) wristwatch1 like devices. Research into bionic contact lenses1, capable of displaying information from your smartphone into your fi eld of vision, is going on right now!

As we are becoming more comfortable with the concept of using software as a service and having our data stored in the Cloud, the advantages will become more obvious and compelling. (see IT Talk, I Look At Clouds From Both Sides Now, SSN, Nov 2011).

Soon, we will be used to having ALL of our information at hand ALL of the time, ANYWHERE. We will be accessing our work related data, news, social media or instant visual communication without having to turn on a Personal Computer or even fi ddling with our smartphone. We will REALLY be connected and realise, as Scott McNealy of Sun Microsystems predicted in the late 1980’s, that THE NETWORK IS THE COMPUTER!I, for one, am not convinced that helping to expedite the end of The Brief History of Personal Computing will actually improve our lives. But that is another story…

Q1. How long have you lived in Jacobs Well? In the general area for 23 years, and 16 in Jacobs Well.

Q2. What attracted you to the area? The fi shing, the ambience of a local town and the proximity to both the Airport and surfi ng beaches. Being able to get off the main highways, travel through the cane fi elds and be home amongst the peace and quiet.

Q3. What’s your favourite thing about living here? The characters of the place, the respect for local pioneers and the amazing work they did. I love having a bit of a chat to some of the people who have lived here forever and listening to their stories. Of course, the water is a no-brainer and the ease of access to the Bay and the surrounding islands.

Q4. What your most unfavourite thing about living here? The mozzies and midgies!!. Also the general lack of promotion of this fantastic area.

Q5. Any suggestions on ways to improve the area? More control (by the Council) of the mozzies and midgies, particularly at peak and holiday times. Better marketing and promotion of the area to attract more diverse businesses, which in turn, will attract more visitors.

Q6. Do you have a secret/not so secret talent?

I was recently invited to speak at a Business Conference in front of approximately 2,000 people, on the subject of Entrepreneurship.

Q7. Now for a list of personal favourites:Holiday destination(s) and why:I love going to Vanuatu for the simplistic lifestyle.

Food? Anything Asian – I love the freshness of Asian food.

Music/Artist? Reggae and Blues – no particular artist

Past-time(s) Travel, both overseas and within Australia.

Movie(s)? I don’t go to the movies much, (about once in 25 years) but don’t mind comedies, like “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” Q8. Do you have a pet, and what did you name it? Not at present but have had Blue Heelers, one named Bob, and one named Basil

Q9. Is there a quotation you think is worthy of mentioning here?Money certainly can’t buy happiness, and defi nitely not health, but it can make life fun.

Q10. A fi nal statement or song which refl ects the essence of you!Do what you want to do, be what you want to be, Yeh.
