Big bodies on Big bodies on the agenda for the agenda for State clash

BIG bodies are at the top of the agenda for this year’s WAFL State team selection panel.

So if you are keen on entering the WAFL’s State team competition, where you could win a trip for you and a friend to the WA versus South Australia clash in Adelaide on May 26, you are well-advised to start paying attention to the big fellas.

State coach Chris Waterman, his chairman of selectors Brad Wira and assistant coaches Marc Webb, David Hynes and Paul Peos have liked a lot of what they have seen in the first four rounds of the 2012 season given the kind of team they want to assemble.

“It’s a small ground in Adelaide so a big-bodied team is looking most likely,” said Wira, a former State 18s coach and Fremantle and Western Bulldogs player.

“WA has a certain style of play that has certainly been successful in the past, and while we will need speed, hardened bodies will help us implement a broader game style.

“At this stage guys like the ‘duelling Banjos’ at East Perth, Josh Smith and Paul Johnson, Claremont’s Mitch Andrews and Subiaco’s Callum Sinclair are the types we are watching.

“That’s not to rule out the younger, quicker types or the wiley veterans like Kris Miller and Andrew Foster.

“But we also want some accountability and that’s where guys like East Perth’s Kyle Anderson and West Perth’s Dion Fleay will come into it.”

Wira said Waterman was open to selection on many facets – and age was no barrier.

So if 30-year-old Paul Medhurst is in form, he’ll come under consideration.

“There is no age bracket and if guys like Medhurst are playing well and a State guernsey still means something to them then they’re in our sight,” Wira said.

WA last played South Australia in 2009 in Perth when the home side won by a point.

This year you could be there to watch the WA boys try to repeat that success.

// The big boys are the focus of the State selectors

WAFL’s 25 Best Players Over the Past 25 Years

8

// Toby McGrath

UNDERSTANDING the way one of the most highly-decorated players to ever play in the WAFL functioned allowed four-time premiership coach John Dimmer to get the best out of Toby McGrath.

Dimmer and McGrath were united in 2004 when the super-coach took over the coaching reigns at the Bulldogs from John Northey and McGrath returned to Perth after two years on Essendon’s rookie list.

McGrath had previously been on West Coast’s rookie list for two seasons.

Recently inducted as one of the Top 25 Players Over the Past 25 Years, McGrath epitomises that unique WAFL era.

While he has accepted that lost opportunities cost him a chance of playing an AFL game, looking back he can only be proud of what he has achieved.

“If I had the head on my shoulders then that I do now things may have been different,” said the 31-year-old who last weekend played game No.223 for the Bulldogs since making his league debut in 1998.

“I had a lot of good players around me and it’s easy to look back and think about what you should and shouldn’t have done.

“And while I’ve accepted that I didn’t get to play football at that level, I’ve achieved all I could at WAFL level.

“And 15 years later I am still running around trying to get a kick.

“Now I can sit back and watch my little brother Ashley work towards playing 200 games for Brisbane (he currently sits on 178 games).”

As for mentors throughout a career that has yielded a Sandover Medal, Simpson Medal, two premiership, State captaincy and two club

by Tracey Lewis

fairest and bests, McGrath said Dimmer was a major influence on his career.

“I spent eight years with John and he understood the life balance of a WAFL footballer – where family and work came first ahead of football,” McGrath said.

“Before I went to Melbourne Tony Micale had a big influence on me and in Melbourne it was Terry Daniher.

“But I played my best football under JD, the way he coached suited the way I played.

“Having Paul (Hasleby) at the club now is great too. It’s been really positive down here

and having just retired himself he knows how the older guys need to be managed.”

As for knowing when it’s time to call it a day, McGrath thinks he’ll know when it’s time to go.

“Well I hope I’ll know anyway,” said McGrath earlier this week, just before he had scans on his injured knee to see how serious the damage was.

“This year has felt a bit different to be honest. I’ve started travelling a bit more in the off-season and thinking how good it would to have weekends off.

“But I am still enjoying playing and the minute I lose that feeling I’ll walk away.”

Cloth patches

During 2012, the Football Budget will again feature a section on WAFL memorabilia and invites you to write or email if you want more information about the football collectables you have tucked away at home.

COLLECTABLESby Sean Cowan

Cloth patches were only really popular for a little while back in the 1960s.

But there were enough of them produced in that decade that they still come up from time-to-time.

During my years of collecting, I have seen at least four different sets of eight patches (one for each of the traditional WAFL clubs).

But it’s very difficult to find information about how they were produced and by whom.

Can any Football Budget readers help?

Pat, of Shelley, has a full set of eight patches from the late 1960s and was kind enough to let us photograph them recently.

But we have not seen a full set of the patches which were made in the early 1960s by the Daily News. We would also like to see

the patches the newspaper made in the m i d - 1 9 6 0 s , which featured the club logo and a photo of the club captain on each.

I have only seen one other set

If you have a query regarding WAFL memorabilia, send photographs and/or details to Sean at [email protected] or Sean Cowan, GPO Box N1025, Perth WA, 6843. His website is at www.waflcollectables.webs.com and he also can be contacted on 0412 760 004.

In last week’s column, I featured one of the more expensive WAFL collectables – the Rigby’s urchin fi gurines, which were painted in football club colours back in the early 1950s.

At well over $1000 each (when in good nick) these appeal to more than just collectors of football memorabilia. They also appeal to collectors of Darbyshire, which was a Perth pottery back in the 1950s.

It’s a similar story for this week’s featured item. But you would be lucky to ever find one of these for just $1000.

The football ashtrays were one of a few hundred different kitch figurines made by HL Brisbane & Wunderlich factory in Subiaco between 1946 and 1961. They are known as “Wembley Ware”.

Nowadays, there are Wembley Ware collectors Australia-wide, including Sydney businessman Trevor Kennedy and WA District Court judge Robert Cock.

And the footballer is one of the pieces they all want.

Though I have never seen them a ll, I’m led to believe there are eight different versions of the football ashtray – one for each of the traditional WAFL clubs.

And if you harbour ambitions of collecting them all, then you had better be prepared to take out a second mortgage. On the latest sale prices, they will set you back upwards of $5000 each.

I would love to hear from anyone who might have one of these, especially anyone who might have picked one up for a song at a garage sale.

I’d especially love to get photographs of all eight versions.

Ashtrays Club mirrorsFinally for this week, it seems collectors are still in love with those WAFL club mirrors.

I continually receive emails for advice about their value and from people wanting to buy them. But they rarely pop up for sale.

East Perth supporter Garnett recently emailed with a photograph of this faux antique-style Royals mirror which was, from

what I can gather, the first type of WAFL mirror produced.

Previously, I had only seen the East Fremantle and South Fremantle mirrors from this set, so I would be interested to see the other five.

As for the value, I reckon these ones are good for about $400 each, which is slightly more than the 1978 mirrors (which can be recognised by the logo on each - a Swan inside a hexagon).

The 1980s mirrors are much smaller in size and worth about $100-$150 each.

during my time, which was very colourful but short on provenance. Is anyone aware of any others?

I’ll update you on my discoveries later this year, along with some detail on the value of each.

GET THE GRINGO (ICON FILMS)It’s been a bad day for Driver (Mel Gibson) and it’s not getting any better.

He just made a big haul of millions that would give him a nice summer vacation on easy street. A good idea that went south - literally.

During a high-speed car chase with the US Border Patrol and with a bleeding body in his back seat, Driver flips his car smashing through the border wall, tumbling violently, coming to a stop … in Mexico.

Apprehended by the Mexican authorities, he is sent to a hard-core prison where he enters the strange and dangerous world of ‘El Pueblito’.

Not an easy place for an outsider such as Driver to survive, unless it’s with the help of someone who knows the ropes – like a 10 year old kid.

Get the Gringo opens on May 31.

GAME PREVIEWS

All games broadcast from 2pm

SUBIACO V EAST FREMANTLEMedibank StadiumSubiaco comes home after its Foxtel Cup loss to face a resurgent East Fremantle who is becoming one of the more consistently strong teams this season.

The Lions fell short in their Foxtel Cup match against Port Adelaide despite the performances of Jason Bristow, Aidan Parker and Brant Chambers. Their early exit from the interstate competition means the Lions will put all their focus into maintaining top spot on the WAFL ladder.

The match ups in the middle should prove the most exciting in this encounter, with both teams possessing cohesive, creative midfields that are able to penetrate their inside 50 to find their high scoring forwards. The Sharks have a host of AFL listed players dominating their midfield, though Mark McGough and Brock O’Brien will also be key targets for Subiaco to focus on.

The Sharks will have to utilise their scoring opportunities more effectively, with 21 behinds last week, especially against a Subiaco side that is not only consistently on target but also skilled at influencing their opponents’ accuracy.

Over the last three WAFL games Subiaco’s opponents have scored at an average of 50 percent to the Lions’ 65, despite having less scoring opportunities in two of those games.

Subiaco’s Rhett Kerr is set to play his 50th WAFL game this week.

Overall record: Subiaco won 112, East Fremantle won 221, Drawn 3

SWAN DIST V PEEL THUNDERSteel Blue OvalPeel’s two greatest scoring margins are against Swan Districts, as is its highest scoring game, though looking to find its first win of the season against the resurgent Swan Districts may be a hard task.

The Thunder were unable to capitalise on a second half revival against East Fremantle last week, though signs of improvement continue to appear. Peel is starting to find a wider range of scoring options and Pat Travers is fast emerging as the Thunder’s most dangerous player, averaging 31 possessions this season.

The Thunder forwards allowed players to run the ball fast out of the back 50 letting them feed to forwards for the easy goal. Against a team like Swans this could prove dangerous, especially with the possible return of Ash Hansen from injury.

The Thunder have done well limiting Hansen in the past; in his last two outings against Peel he scored just three goals and had a total of 16 possessions, including an ineffectual two handball effort last July.

The Swans have plenty of other weapons in their arsenal, with Tim Geappen, Josh Roberts and Kyle Hams among a host of contributors to the Swans’ revitalised game this season. The outcome of this game may rest on Peel’s ability to restrict the Swan forwards’ influence on the scoreboard, forcing them to find other options.

Graham Jetta is set to play his 50th game for Swans.

Overall record: Swan Districts won 30, Peel won 8

SOUTH FREM V CLAREMONTFremantle OvalThe changing game of South Fremantle faces its toughest challenge, going head-to-head with the premiers who will want to avoid a second loss to a Fremantle team early in 2012.

The Bulldogs’ struggles have been rooted in their inability to find consistent scoring and a tendency to let themselves get behind and play catch-up.

While the Bulldogs have survived games like this on the back of their poise and fortitude, with older legs and limited scoring at times those comebacks are becoming less effective.

The Bulldogs have consistently forced turnovers, often using them as a catalyst for their comebacks. To put themselves in front the Bulldogs will need to capitalise on Claremont’s rare turnovers, limit their own inaccuracies and get out to a strong start.

Claremont will pounce on any deficiencies, becoming a strong defensive team when facing high-octane attacks, dominating the scoring against weaker back lines and grinding it out in low scoring physical encounters.

The Tigers have an abundance of scoring, with three players in the top 10 goal kickers. The Bulldogs will have their hands full limiting the likes of Chad Jones,

Paul Medhurst and Ian Richardson especially should Toby McGrath’s leg injury cost him game time.

B y r o n Schammer is poised to play his 50th game with the Tigers.

Overall record: South Fremantle won 138, Claremont won 115, Drawn 2

WEST PERTH V PERTHArena JoondalupBoth Perth and West Perth sit on a 1-3 record, though both teams face opposing problems, setting up an interesting match-up this week.

The Falcons were let down by their inability to penetrate Claremont’s press early last week and without reliable scoring options may continue to suffer early. For the second time this season the Falcons were held to a scoreless first quarter.

Perth has shown it can score much easier this season, though its defence remains one of the bigger problem areas and they were unable to withstand East Perth’s relentless pressure last week. And they face a Falcons outfit with a formidable back line of its own.

The Falcons will miss captain Jason Salecic who injured a leg last week. His distribution is one of the main offensive triggers and he also works hard as one of the team’s defensive anchors.

West Perth will need to show some of Salecic’s versatility to put together a comprehensive effort on both sides, and rely on its ability to stay composed in tough situations.

The less experienced Demons have shown an inability to close out games this season, though against a low scoring side like West Perth they may be better served trying to out gun their opponents.

The key to a game plan like this will be resourceful players such as Ross Young and Leon Davis, though they will need to get past the likes of Dan Hunt and Dion Fleay who have remained solid in West Perth’s back line. The two defenders are among West Perth’s best and will most likely get the task of containing Young and Davis.

Overall record: West Perth won 185, Perth won 147, Drawn 5// Tim Geappen

WAFC24

// The WAFC’s Troy Kirkham instructs participants at the inaugural Mum’s Orientation Coaching Course.

2012 Colts Coaches AwardThe Colts Coaches Award was established in 2004 to recognise and encourage talented players in the colts competition.

This award provides the Colts Coaches with an opportunity to vote for their best player. Opposing colts coaches meet after each game to award votes for the best players in the game on a 3-2-1 voting system.

A small but highly-enthusiastic group of ladies arrived for the West Australian Football Commission’s inaugural Mum’s Orientation Coaching Course in March.

WAFC Female Football Manager Alison Moore said that with the huge influx of young girls wanting to play Auskick and the formation of several all-girls Auskick centres, the WAFC is addressing the lack of female coaches by engaging mums to develop an interest in coaching.

“Our premise is that women can definitely do more than just cut up the oranges and wash the footy jumpers. Women can make excellent coaches too,” Moore said.

“The open forum allowed the small group of women to discuss coaching and ask important questions with no pressure. Some basic coaching theory highlighted planning skills and the knowledge required, with an emphasis on fun and variety in all coaching sessions.

“Coaching manuals assisted the ladies in planning their first few sessions, while tickets to the NAB Cup football games that weekend created huge excitement.

“After morning tea, practical sessions on Kitchener Park included kicking, handballing, marking, bouncing and tackling.

“Basic drills that can be adapted for varying degrees of difficulty were also covered with many of the women displaying highly competitive skills, before we concluded with a goal kicking competition.

“Special thanks to Meg Horton who offered up a bottle of wine for the first lady to kick six goals.

“The practical sessions were followed by a tour of Patersons Stadium and concluded with a champagne lunch in Mueller Park.”

The WAFC is planning another Orientation Course in April for ladies who missed out on the first one.

Interested participants should contact Alison Moore on [email protected] or 0430868145.

The WAFC is also aiming to develop a second tier Introductory Course which will cover slightly more complex skills and drills, along with more complex coaching aspects to prepare the women for Level 1 Coaching Accreditation.

“It was pleasing to note that several of the women have already gone on to become assistant coaches at their clubs for the 2012 season and some brave ones have opted to do their Level 1,” Moore said.

When Term 2 of the school year returns so too will a dedicated and enthusiastic group of female secondary school students when the WAFC Schoolgirls Cup kicks off in May with over 50 schools taking part.

This year’s competition will involve about 2000 students competing in two divisions of the program with a finals series concluding on July 1 when qualifying schools will battle it out for the Alison Moore and Debbie White Division Cups.

This year a competition will also take place at Senior High School Country Week.

The WAFC and School Sport WA are proud to support the WAFC Schoolgirls Cup program.

To mark the 16th year of the competition, Female Football patrons Alison Moore, Debbie White and Cathy Vanderweide were on hand as the WAFC and School Sport WA launched the WAFC Schoolgirls Cup competition at a special function held at Patersons Stadium on Wednesday, March 28.

Until recently, girls have had limited opportunities to pursue their interest in the sport of Australian Football.

The main aim of the secondary girl’s competition is to provide a wide range of experiences to girls, who would not otherwise have the chance to be involved in the sport.

In particular, participation in the school competition will be an important step in girls becoming involved in the senior women’s football competition.

// AFL Female Football Manager Jan Cooper with WA female football patrons Alison Moore, Debbie White and Cathy Vanderweide.

WA Schoolgirls creating their own history

It’s interesting to note that The Girls’ football competition was established way back in 1996 with the following aims:

• Provide an alternative sport for girls

• Promote girls in sport

• Promote a healthy lifestyle

• Enhance school / community links

• Play with peers

• Build school pride

In 2012 the expected participation rate for females will be close to 90,000 across all female programs.

The WAFC and School Sport WA wish all players coaches and volunteers the best of luck in this Year’s WAFC Schoolgirls competition.

UMPIRES26

GOAL umpire David Shawcross will celebrate a dual milestone this weekend when he offi ciates in his 350th league game.

The veteran flag waver will become just the second West Australian to reach the mark, but it will also be a historic day for his family because it will be the 500th match where a Shawcross has umpired at league level.

David’s brother Colin umpired 22 league games as a field umpire before taking up goal umpiring where he officiated in 128 matches.

The pair is closing in on the record of retired field and goal umpires Craig and Wayne Hendrie who umpired a combined 513 games. Their father Rob also umpired at AFL and WAFL level with 218 matches.

“It’s a fantastic effort from Dave to be umpiring his 350th game and the Shawcross name will forever be cemented in umpiring,” WAFC High Performance Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said.

“Dave had an outstanding AFL career and has since come back to the WAFL to add leadership and skill to the group.

“He’s been the president of the Umpires’ Association as well, so he gives up his time to make other people better.”

The family traits within the WAFL umpiring team are extremely strong in 2012.

David’s daughter Holly is now the fitness coach and there are a host of other family combinations throughout the ranks.

AFL field umpire Jeff Dalgleish and AFL boundary umpire Brett Dalgleish are brothers. So are WAFL field umpires Rob and Peter McCaw.

The Laycock trio – goal umpires Matt and Jonathon and field umpire Ben add another unique element to the group along with boundary umpiring Sinclair brothers (Ryan and Kyle) and their dad Darryl who is the field umpires’ coach.

Goal umpire Lauren French is spending 2012 without having her sister Emmy alongside her after several years together on the panel.

Field umpire Craig Bowden’s brother Mark retired last year because of employment opportunities interstate.

Goal umpire Brody Payne’s father Rick and fellow flag waver Kendell Ball’s father Mike are also former WAFL umpires. AFL boundary umpire Alan Zanich’s father Graeme is part of the field umpire coaching team.

The Hollick’s, Carrod’s, Gaensler’s and Clark’s are further family umpiring examples.

“Umpiring is a very tight knit group,” Sinclair said.

“Attracting so many families is great and the fact that a large group of brothers, sisters, sons and daughters have followed in the footsteps of each other is a remarkable achievement and something everyone should be really proud of.”

Railways showed good early season form handing out a 38-point win against Kalgoorlie at Sir Richard Moore Oval in the second mid-week fixture. Railways were well-served by Brodie Johnson (three goals), Ryan Booy and Rhett Foster while Jake Conti and Ben Webb battled hard for the losers.

LOWER SOUTH WEST:One of the big highlights of the 2012 season will be when the Lower South West Football League hosts a WAFL fi xture between East Perth and Swan Districts at Imperials Oval on May 5.

League secretary Michelle Brough said preparations were well in hand and they are looking at having a big day in Manjimup.

In other LSWFL news, Kojonup Cougars have appointed Jarrod Chipperfield as their 2012 coach. Chipperfield brings a wealth of experince at WAFL level and more recently in the NTFL. On the recruiting front Chipperfield has a number of players from Katanning and from the NTFL joining the club this season.

After a successful 2011 season when they won both league and reserves, Pemberton Southerners have lost a number of players with Jamie Collins, James Sebire, Scott Roche, David Roche (Carey Park), Dean Decampo (Collie) and Jahael Beaton (Donnybrook) all moving on. New coach Tim Lyster will provide opportunities for promising colts players and develop juniors.

Manjimup side Imperials will open its 2012 season with a clash with Deanmill in the Todd/Cooper Cup on April 14. They have been active in their recruiting with former South Bunbury players Keede Phillips, Dane Johns and Tyson Lee joining the club while Chris Franklin has left the club and joined East Perth. Deanmill will be coached by David Fall and will rely on a number of promising juniors in its quest for the 2012 flag.

Manjimup Tigers have lost 13 players from last season’s grand final side with the majority joining the Peel Football League. League

coach Ray Masters will be hoping they can put up a good show against Southerners in the opening round, a night fixture at Rae Park against Southerners on March 14.

Boyup Brook will host Bridgetown in the final match of the round with new Bridgetown Bulldogs coach Clint Hewson hoping for an improvement on last season’s disappointing effort with an upset win. The Bulldogs have actively been recruiting with SWFL players Ben Sarsfield and Rick Henderson joining the club. Boyup Brook look to have retained most of their 2012 squad under coach Scott Tweedie who is in his second year and will look to improve on the 2011 effort.

Tough first encounter in season-opener

by Dylan Mellon

THE fi rst round of the WA Amateur Football League season kicks off this weekend with Mt Lawley looking to get their campaign off to a good start against North Beach in the fi rst match of the season.

After losing last years’ grand final to University, Mt Lawley travel to Chas Riley Reserve to take on North Beach, a formidable task but one that Mt Lawley President Gary Formica said the team was looking forward to.

“Having North Beach away first up is always a tough assignment but it’s a blessing in disguise,” he said.

“You know where you’re at with a tough first-up encounter, there will be no ifs, buts or maybes.”

The two teams played twice in 2011, in Rounds 5 and 14, with Mt Lawley getting the points on both occasions.

It’s a new look Mt Lawley in 2012 however, with the Hawks losing a number of A Grade players from last year, including 2011 C.J Jamieson Medalist Clinton Gribble.

Formica said that although the side lost those players they had picked up a number of recruits.

“We picked up a couple of young guys,” he said.

“We lost a few bigger blokes and picked up smaller, quicker guys.

“Considering last year we got done by a mosquito fleet it’s probably not a bad thing.”

Despite losing a number of regular players, Formica says the club is still aiming to go one better than last years’ second place finish.

“We’re always going to be aiming for a flag, that’s what you play for,” he said.

“Nothing’s changed in that regard.”

Mt Lawley has a new look off the field as well, with the club revamping its reserves coaching panel.

“We’ve got a good league coach and a very strong reserves coaching panel as well this year, Formica said.

North Beach will also be looking to return to the top after their run of seven consecutive premierships came to an end last season.

The long-time champs played in 10 grand finals in a row, winning nine, but lost to eventual premiers University in the second semi-final last year.

They will be determined to win the Round 1 clash at home with two consecutive away games at North Fremantle and Maddington to follow.

The A Grade match kicks off at 2.30pm following the reserves at 12.35pm and colts at 10.45am.

“Considering last year we got done by a mosquito fleet it’s

probably not a bad thing.” Gary Formica.
