President’s Report

Final 2012 Event

We continue to achieve low numbers at each of the respective shooting disciplines. The 2013 calendar will be distributed shortly after several con-siderations. Our Committee still has the task of approving the final outline.

The Monarto Range Management Committee (MRMC) is now ‘self-sufficient’ and reports direct to the SSAA SA State Executive. The Chairman is David H with represent-atives from each of the 8 Branches that occupy the SSAA SA State Range. I have been given the task of co-ordinating every range use over the area for the 2013 program.

Maintenance and Capital work is be-ing considered for the future, and will encompass a 5 year time frame. The two large rain water tanks have been installed and plumbed, with the water catchment being from both of the northern firing line sheds. It is pro-posed that the water from these tanks will feed into the club rooms and help service the entire network of ranges.

Range Officer Training

The Club is offering Members the opportunity to become Range Offic-ers. This task is absolutely necessary in the operation of our shoot pro-gramme. Ian is planning to conduct a Range Officer training course in the New Year. If you are prepared to become a range officer and you have not yet nominated please make your wishes known to Ian. In the September newsletter the President’s report should have read:

The Complex Lease expires in 2033 with no right of renewal, however, purchase is possible.

Practice Days

Practice makes perfect. And so it is with most shooters. Sure, there are those among us who are 'naturals', who have an instinctive feel for keys as-pects of the sport, but I'm not one of them. Mere mortals such as myself need time on the range. Time to practice stance, breathing, aim, trigger control, recoil, regaining sight picture etc.

Practice played a key role in the recent club cham-pionships, with certain (unnamed) members recog-nising their lack of range time and the resulting poor performance during the competition. Welcome to my world!

The great thing about practice days is the oppor-tunity to focus on your needs as a shooter. During 2012 I've used the opportunity to develop loads for two calibres, sight in scopes (with plenty of time, rather than squeezing this in before a comp), deter-mine settings for various distances, improve my stance for all comps and in particular the 3P, and prepare for the duck shooting season with the 12G.

There's a number of practice days scheduled in the draft 2013 program, which will be 'published' (via newsletter and on the website) once finalised. I plan to be at as many of them as I can.

See you there.

Firearms Branch Forms

As advised last year, all of the current forms are available on the SAPOL website. It is rec-ommended that you use these instead of the current hard copies. Initially they can be com-pleted on line and printed before you sign and forward by post. In future this will move to delivery as the system is developed further.

Access to the forms is as follows:

http://www.police.sa.gov.au/sapol/services/firearms_weapons/firearms_forms.jsp

Club Championships 27 Oct 2012

Although it was not a particularly windy day there was a breeze which varied in strength and direction from time to time, making it hard for shooters to maintain a consistency of aim.

Having said that, even the 50 metre targets seemed to dodge the rimfire bullets that day. Low scores were the norm.

6mm Steyr Mannlicher Projectile: Sierra 100 gr Spire point Boat-tail Charge: 45.5 gn AR2213 SC Scope: 3x9x40 The 6mm calibre was introduced by Remington as a .244 in 1955. The company later changed the original 1:12 twist rates to 1:9 in order to stablise projectiles larger than 90gr.

A 7mm-08 Projectile: Sierra 160 gr Charge: 43 gn AR2209 Scope: Leupold Vari X-III 8.5-25x40 Originally a wildcat cartridge the 7mm-08 is used for game hunting, target and long-range shooting. It has a flatter trajectory than the .308 and projectiles with favourable ballistic coefficients.

.308 Remington 700 Projectile: 150 gr Charge: 46 gn AR2208 Scope: Leupold VX-R 3x9x40 One of the most popular cartridges in the world the .308 parent case has been used to develop other calibres such as the .243 Win-chester, the .260 Remngton, and the 7mm-08 Remington (above).

Please Note: Due to police concerns regarding the potential theft of firearms, and particularly high powered rifles, the names of club members owning the calibres below have been purposely omitted.

Thank you to everyone who has provided permission to photograph their firearms.
