From the Desk Of Fr. John Thank you to all who helped with our Christ-mas environment and decorations. Many came to help take things down. It is a little sad…since the season goes by so quickly…but it was certainly beautiful and inspiring. Part of our youth group came to help with the ‘heavy’ lifting…along with students from Fr. McGivney Catholic High School…and other families! Thank you all so very much. Progress is being made with our Air Condi-tioning system. Engineers and committee members met to go over the bids and select the General Contractor for the work. But there were…as always…changes that had to be made and other decisions. This past Wednesday the Committee met to make some final decisions…before we are able to announce the Contracting Company…and proceed with applying to Bishop Paprocki for permission to proceed with the pro-ject. We are told that we really cannot wait…since our system is so old. If something were to happen during the cooling season…we would be in real trouble. I think we can understand that…when our own home air conditioning goes down at home…it is not very nice…to say the least. Here it would be very…very expensive to repair…and a great waste of money to fix something that would not last. So we will get back to you when we have more information. Some families have already donated toward the project…thank you so much! We have several things kind of hanging out there…one of which is our security system for church…and upgrade for the school. We have so many entrances and accesses to our facility…we need cameras…and electric locks that can isolate areas for everyone’s safety. We also have the marble wall to repair…we are getting closer…but no start date yet. There were issues with tuck-pointing, etc. that needed to be settled first…so maybe now we can get a start date. Downstairs upgrading and refreshment…repair the ceiling…light fixtures…paint…etc. There is always some-

thing and we just take one step at a time. Thanks for your understanding and patience. The Baptism of Jesus was the close of the Christmas-Epiphany Season…but it was much more in the ancient Church. The whole mystery of the ‘manifestation’ of Jesus…His be-ing revealed for His true identity and mission…was celebrated on one Sunday…the Epiphany. The great Feast of the Epiphany contained the feast of the Angels announcing to the shepherds that the Savior was born in Bethlehem. It also an-nounced the star guiding the (Gentile) Magi to Jesus revealing Him to the whole world. It also revealed to us at the Baptism of the Lord Jesus being anointed by the Spirit descended upon Him and the Father’s voice who announced that Je-sus was His beloved Son…and then finally the Wedding Feast at Cana when Jesus worked his first sign and revealed Himself to His disciples. That is a lot! The wonder of the whole mystery of Jesus as God’s Son, Messiah, Savior and Lord…all wrapped into one celebration. We took pause to reflect upon our own baptism and now being joined to the household of God as adopted children and heirs of heaven. God’s love is showered upon us. God’s Spirit is given to us so that we can fulfill our mission in the world. We are called to be disciples and spread the Good News of the Kingdom…for all of humankind. The Mass today takes us to the active minis-try of Jesus and his first sign…revealing Him-self to His disciples. Jesus is at a wedding feast and they run out of wine. Mary tells Jesus of the embarrassing situation. Jesus refocuses her hu-man concern…and reframes it in His ‘hour’…the time of His passion death and resurrection. This is the time of the Father directing his actions to reveal the presence of the Anointed One…the time of the Messiah. Jesus is the Bridegroom who comes to claim his bride…the Church. It is a time of extravagant abundance…the gift of Jesus that perfects all that God has given in the past…and supersedes them. Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples…and they believed in Him.

ZIGGY’S QUESTION: Are you “satisfied” with your pray-er life, spiritual progress and life in general? Read on… ZIGGY’S THOUGHTS: At NO TIME should and I sit back for more than a few seconds and say, “I’m good; no more effort is needed.” Because we are all flawed sinners we need to be always striving to do and be better, longing to come closer to God in a real and meaningful way. Ask yourself, “How am I doing?” Then…keep striving!

Focus on Pro Life in January

This weekend we have the opportunity to share our faith by supporting the Church in Latin America during the second collec-tion. Many in Latin Ameri-ca and the Caribbean, do not have access to church programs and ministries because of a rising secular culture, difficult rural ter-rain, and a shortage of ministers which present obstacles to practicing the faith.

Your support to the collection provides lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and reli-gious formation, and other pro-grams to share our faith with

those who long to hear the Good News of Christ.

To learn more about how you can make a difference, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

Alpha The first session of Alpha was held Sunday, January 13, 2019. 44 people plus the Alpha team participated in this new and ex-citing ministry. What is Alpha? Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith that runs over 11 weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to cre-ate conversation. Alpha sessions focus on three key areas:

Food Whether it’s a group of friends gathered around a kitchen table, or a quick catch-up over coffee, food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. We start with food, because it’s a great way to encourage community and get to know each other. Then a Talk The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation. Generally, 30 minutes long, they ex-plore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions such as Who is Jesus? and How can we have faith? Followed by Discussion Probably the most important part of any Alpha is the chance to share thoughts and ideas on the topic, and simply discuss it in a small group. There’s no obligation to say anything. And there’s nothing you can’t say. It’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective in an honest, friendly and open environment.

This is the last weekend to register for this Alpha session. You may reg-ister online at the Ss. Peter & Paul website at http://saintspeter-paul.org/ Another Alpha session will be sched-uled later this year.

CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Saints Peter and Paul parishioners have pledged $220,000 to this project. That is 45% of our $490,000 goal! Thank you for your generous gifts to support this new Catholic senior living community. ANSWERING YOUR QUESTIONS: This week, we would like to answer questions we’ve heard from parishioners about this project: Why do we need to raise a minimum of $7 million to begin building Divine Mercy? To secure bank financing for construction, we need to have significant equity for Divine Mercy Senior Living Community. All pledges to the Divine Mercy campaign will help us secure loans and begin construction on-schedule in the summer of 2019!

Who is being asked to participate in this campaign? We are conducting campaigns in every parish in the Alton deanery (23 parish-es in Madison and Bond Counties). All Alton deanery parish households will be invited to make a sacrificial gift. Alton deanery parishes include: Alton - St. Mary (Immaculate Conception), Ss. Peter and Paul; Bethalto - Our Lady Queen of Peace; Brighton - St. Alphonsus; Collinsville - Ss. Peter and Paul; Edwardsville - St. Boniface, St. Mary; Glen Carbon - St. Cecilia; Godfrey - St. Ambrose; Granite City - Holy Family, St. Elizabeth; Grantfork - St. Gertrude; Greenville - St. Lawrence; Highland - St. Paul; Livingston - Sacred Heart; Madi-son - St. Mary and St. Mark; Marine - St. Elizabeth; Maryville - Mother of Perpetu-al Help; Pierron - Immaculate Conception; Pocahontas - St. Nicholas; St. Ja-cob - St. James; Troy - St. Jerome; Wood River - Holy Angels Our campaign committee continues to visit with parishioners to review the campaign in greater detail and invite support. We hope you will be open to talking to a fellow parishioner or Fr. John and considering a pledge to this im-portant project in our area!
