THE RICHNESS OF THE SPIRIT Students, and most adults recalling their school days, are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, mod- ern minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that ap- pears to his disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on his mission of forgiving sin and pro- claiming the mighty acts of God. Formed Pick of the Week: Mary: The Queen Mother In the Old Testament, throughout the line of Davidic kings, the queen was not the wife of the king, but rather the king’s mother. As a result, King Solomon placed a throne at his right hand for his queen mother and bowed down in homage to her. Jesus, as the fulfillment of the Davidic line, rules as king of heaven and earth with his mother, Mary, as the queen mother. JUNE 3: ST. SAINT CHARLES LWANGA AND HIS COMPANIONS (martyred 1886-87 )

“Master of Pages,” reputedly the handsomest man in all Uganda, Charles Lwanga, lay catechist, courageously led about 40 teenaged boys, Catholics and Anglicans, on a 40-mile forced march to martyrdom for their common Chris an faith. Teaching each other the hymns of their different churches, they strengthened one another for the ordeal ahead. King Mwanga, himself barely 20, had ordered them executed for being “those who pray.” But these royal pages were the king’s male harem, who, now Chris ans, refused what pious accounts demurely describe as his “unreasonable demands.” Some were clubbed to death, most burned

alive; the youngest, 13-year old Saint Kizito, whom Charles had o en shielded from the King’s lust; the most tragic, Saint Mbaga, whose father was his execu oner! In 1964, Paul VI canonized the young Catholics and praised their Anglican companions, recalling the heroism of early Chris anity’s African martyrs, which we modern Chris ans of far less faith never expected to see repeated. Forty years a er the pope’s words, what does our faith cost us? Heroism aside, how generous is our response?

Thank you to the Bill Oser family for the generous memorial dona ons to the church parking lot fund and to SS. Peter & Paul Catholic School.

Prayer to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for Protection from the Coronavirus

O Immaculate Heart of Mary, we entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick. At the foot of the Cross, you participated in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith. Patroness of the Diocese of Jefferson City, you know what we need. We are certain of the power of your intercession, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who taught us to “love one another, as I have loved you” took our sufferings upon Himself and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Bring under your mantel of protection all who provide care for the sick and minister to their needs, as your Son implores us to do for one another. V. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. R. Do not despise our pleas and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

Everything you need to know about Pentecost Denver, Colo., Jun 8, 2019 / (CNA).- This weekend, the Church celebrates Pentecost, one of the most important feast days of the year that concludes the Easter season and celebrates the beginning of the Church. Here’s what you need to know about the feast day: The ming and origins of Pentecost Pentecost always occurs 50 days a er the death and resurrec on of Jesus, and ten days a er his ascension into heaven. Because Easter is a moveable feast without a fixed date, and Pentecost depends on the ming of Easter, Pentecost can fall anywhere between May 10 and June 13. The ming of these feasts is also where Catholics get the concept of the Novena - nine days of prayer - because in Acts 1, Mary and the Apostles prayed together “con nuously” for nine days a er the Ascension leading up to Pentecost. Tradi onally, the Church prays the Novena to the Holy Spirit in the days before Pentecost. The name of the day itself is derived from the Greek word "pentecoste," meaning 50th. There is a parallel Jewish holiday, Shavu`ot, which falls 50 days a er Passover. Shavu’ot is some mes called the fes val of

weeks, referring to the seven weeks since Passover. Originally a harvest feast, Shavu`ot now commemorates the sealing of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai, when the Lord revealed the Torah to Moses on Mount Sinai. Every year, the Jewish people renew their acceptance of the gi of the Torah on this feast. What happens at Pentecost? In the Chris an tradi on, Pentecost is the celebra on of the person of the Holy Spirit coming upon the Apostles, Mary, and the first followers of Jesus, who were gathered together in the Upper Room. A “strong, driving” wind filled the room where they were gathered, and tongues of fire came to rest on their heads, allowing them to speak in different languages so that they could understand each other. It was such a strange phenomenon that some people thought the Chris ans were just drunk - but Peter pointed out that it was only the morning, and that the phenomenon was caused by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also gave the apostles the other gi s and fruits necessary to fulfill the great commission - to go out and preach the Gospel to all na ons. It fulfills the New Testament promise from Christ (Luke 24:46-49) that the Apostles would be

“clothed with power” before they would be sent out to spread the Gospel. Where’s that in the Bible? The main event of Pentecost (the strong driving wind and tongues of fire) takes place in Acts 2:13, though the events immediately following (Peter’s homily, the bap sm of thousands) con nue through verse 41. Happy Birthday, Church It was right a er Pentecost that Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit, preached his first homily to Jews and other non-believers, in which he opened the scriptures of the Old Testament, showing how the prophet Joel prophesied events and the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. He also told the people that the Jesus they crucified is the Lord and was raised from the dead, which “cut them to the heart.” When they asked what they should do, Peter exhorted them to repent of their sins and to be bap sed. According to the account in Acts, about 3,000 people were bap sed following Peter’s sermon. For this reason, Pentecost is considered the birthday of the Church - Peter, the first Pope, preaches for the first me and converts thousands of new believers. The apostles and believers, for the first me, were

united by a common language, and a common zeal and purpose to go and preach the Gospel. Pentecost vestments and customs around the world Typically, priests will wear red vestments on Pentecost, symbolic of the burning fire of God’s love and the tongues of fire that descended on the apostles. However, in some parts of the world, Pentecost is also referred to as “WhitSunday”, or White Sunday, referring to the white vestments that are typically worn in Britain and Ireland. The white is symbolic of the dove of the Holy Spirit, and typical of the vestments that catechumens desiring bap sm wear on that day. An Italian Pentecost tradi on is to sca er rose leaves from the ceiling of the churches to recall the miracle of the fiery tongues, and so in some places in Italy, Pentecost is some mes called Pascha Rosatum (Easter roses). In France, it is tradi on to blow trumpets during Mass to recall the sound of the driving wind of the Holy Spirit. In Asia, it is typical to have an extra service, called genuflexion, during which long poems and prayers are recited. In Russia, Mass goers o en carry flowers or green branches during Pentecost services.
