LOST AND FOUND Two of today’s readings make it quite clear that God is on the side of the poor. Amos de- scribes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his cleverness and is rewarded. Like the community to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believers, members of the Jewish and Christian communities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as con- fusing as our own. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Saint Pio of Pietrelcina May 25, 1887 – September 23, 1968 In one of the largest such ceremonies in history, Pope John Paul II canonized Padre Pio of Pietrelcina on June 16, 2002. It was the 45th canonization ceremony in Pope John Paul’s pontificate. More than 300,000 people braved blistering heat as they filled St. Peter’s Square and nearby streets. They heard the Holy Father praise the new saint for his prayer and charity. “This is the most concrete synthesis of Padre Pio’s teaching,” said the pope. He also stressed Padre Pio’s witness to the power of suffering. If accepted with love, the Holy Father stressed, such suffering can lead to “a privileged path of sanctity.” Many people have turned to the Italian Capuchin Franciscan to intercede with God on their behalf; among them was the future Pope John Paul II. In 1962, when

he was still an archbishop in Poland, he wrote to Padre Pio and asked him to pray for a Polish woman with throat cancer. Within two weeks, she had been cured of her life-threatening disease. Born Francesco Forgione, Padre Pio grew up in a family of farmers in southern Italy. Twice his father worked in Jamaica, New York, to provide the family income. At the age of 15, Francesco joined the Capuchins and took the name of Pio. He was ordained in 1910 and was drafted during World War I. After he was discovered to have tuberculosis, he was discharged. In 1917, he was assigned to the friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, 75 miles from the city of Bari on the Adriatic. On September 20, 1918, as he was making his thanksgiving after Mass, Padre Pio had a vision of Jesus. When the vision ended, he had the stigmata in his hands, feet, and side.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although June is the month most associated with weddings in the United States, September has become more popular in recent years. Wedding celebra ons always require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table se ngs knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebra on was held in public view. From this prac ce came a prayer called the “Nup al Blessing,” one of the most solemn prayers in our tradi on. It is very much like the prayers by which bap smal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordina on prayer over a priest, and the Eucharis c Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fi y years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate their anniversaries well, especially with the clinking of glasses filled with good wine. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Formed Pick of the Week The seventy-three books of the Bible come together to tell the story of God's saving plan. But is it merely an ancient document or collection of fables? Why do Catholics believe it is “inspired”—and what does “inspired” mean?

In this session, we'll look at the Bible as an encounter in which the God who speaks to us as a Father lovingly speaks to his children.

Go to formed.org and watch “Knowing the Faith.” Follow the instructions to set up a free account.

Congratulations to Seth Hallowell & Lindsey Kennedy who were married

Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019. "Now let us humbly invoke God’s blessing upon this bride & groom, that in His kindness He may favor with His help those on whom He has bestowed the bond of Marriage."

Brian Lutz leads a Rosary followed by the Divine Mercy Chaplet Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

Prayers are offered for victims of abuse, all priests and all religious, and for healing

within the church.

About 25,000 rallies will take place across our na on, with an es mated 1 million people praying for peace, conversion with love, family, and following God's guidance. Our Blessed Mother has always been with us to bring us closer to God's love. Over 100 years ago our Blessed Mother appeared at Fa ma, intervening on God's behalf, performing the Miracle of the Sun, to tell the world that we need to pray (especially the rosary), sacrifice and spread God's love in our daily lives. From the Bishop: “October Count” “The Diocese has involved itself in a common pastoral practice across the United States known as the ‘October Count.’ The month of October is selected because several statistics indicate that it represents one of the best months to count individuals who attend each weekend Mass at a parish for that month. This is a practical tool for pastoral planning for our parishes throughout the Diocese and I would be grateful for your participation again this year.” Protecting God’s Children workshops The Catholic Church in the United States is committed to providing safe environments in all of our ministries and activities, especially those involving children and youth. One aspect of our commitment is that anyone who works with minors in our parishes, schools and other Catholic organizations in the Diocese of Jefferson City receive training. For a full list of trainings currently available, please visit www.virtusonline.org/virtus/reg_list.cfm?theme=0 and select “Jefferson City, MO (Diocese),” or go to our Events page and filter by “Protecting God’s Children” or call Theresa in the parish office, 882-

Rosary Congress Oct. 5-11 Our Lady has instructed us to “pray with the heart.” To pray with the heart is a decision to set aside

everything, to concentrate, and to persevere in a pure prayer. For the first time the Diocese of Jefferson City will join with many dioceses across the country for the Rosary Congress Oct. 5-11. Each parish can determine its means of participating to for healing in our Church, for more vocations, and for our country. Let’s set our parishes on fire with a mission of love and consecrate our hearts to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Perhaps you are tired of taking the birth control pill for every reproductive problem or of having your daughters on this steroid for acne or cramps? Or

Upcoming Extraordinary Form (Latin) Masses St. Brendan in Mexico will be offering the extraordinary form Mass every Sunday at noon, starting in October. Please help us spread the word! Recall that the diocese does statistical counting of Mass attendance during the month of October. Oct. 6 at 12 noon at St. Bren-dan in Mexico will be a sung Mass. We hope to have a sung Mass at least every first Sunday. Thanks to those who help with the sacred music! Also on Oct. 6, St. Brendan will be having a parish break-fast, starting at 10 a.m. This is a good opportunity to meet other parishioners and to show our unity as a Church. At 11 a.m, Pam and Dave

Grothaus will give a lesson in the church on how to use a hand missal to follow along with the EF Mass. They will also have order forms for missals for those who do not have them as well as other information about the ex-traordinary form. In brief, the schedule for Oct. 6 at St. Brendan: 10 a.m.: Breakfast (parish hall) 11 a.m.: How to use a hand missal to follow along (church) 12 noon: sung Mass (church) Thank you for your prayers and support. We are at a criti-cal step in our growth, and it is important that we have high numbers and a positive relationship with our parishes and diocese.
