SRIVIDYA Page 1 of 8 BASIC DETAIL OF SRI YANTRA. Sri Yantra is a symbolic representation of the Devi Lalita/Tripura Sundari. At the creation of the universe, Lord Shiva delivered 64 Yantras for the materialistic and spiritual welfare of the creatures. For His consort Devi Parvati, He provided, Sri Chakra (Yantra), which combines all the Yantras into one. As such worship of Sri Chakra is considered as one of the highest forms of worship of the Devi (Sri Vidya). It is worshipped by considering the Sri Chakra mainly in three parts. The outermost 3 lines known as Bhupura. It symbolizes the groundplane of temple with 4 Square openings, in the 4 directions of space. This sanctuary is the seat (Pitha) of one’s chosen deity (IstaDevata), representing one’s Higher Self. Two concentric circles, wearing regular lotus (Padma) design. The inner pattern has a period of 8, The outer one a period of 16. These patterns symbolize the sanctity of the inner diagram. An inner figure of interpenetrating triangles. This figure, Symmetric in its vertical central axis, contains 4 upwardpointing triangles (Vahini, The Person) and 5 downwardpointing triangles (Sakti, “Prakriti”, i.e. Energy of divinity). From the 5 downward pointing triangles (Shakti, Energy of divinity) comes creation and from the 4 upward pointing triangles (Vahini, The Person representing Siva) comes the dissolution. Their interpenetration symbolizes the complementarity of opposite principles in creating the illusion of duality through ignorance, whereas the general symmetry and balance of the whole figure symbolizes the more profound reality of Unity of God through its various unfolding. At the centre of the bindu of the Shri Yantra is Kamakala, which has three bindus. One is red, one is white and one is mixed. The red bindu is Kurukulla the Female form (Energy, Shakti), the white bindu is Varahi the Male form (Shiva, Sadhaka), and the mixed bindu is the union of Shiva & Shakti the individual as the potential Shri Yantra. Colours shown in fig. is for understand the geometry only.
