Sri Lanka’s Big Five Game

Outside Africa, no other country or even continent for that matter can boast of the five big and enigmatic creatures

with an exceptional strike rate of sightings as Sri Lanka can. During your Sri Lanka voyage you will have the

chance to be greeted a blue whale approaching your boat to give out a snort, catch a sperm whale as it flips, be

surrounded by a herd of elephants protecting their eager calfs, follow a bear before he slips behind a boulder and

of course, watch a leopard yarn as it lazes on a rock.

Day 1 Airport - Sinharaja: About 4 Hours Drive

Rainforest Edge

At the airport you will be greeted by your chauffeur guide who will take you to your residence for the next two nights

– Rainforest Edge. Relish the journey as you drive just by the natural turquoise waves, pass villages as local go

about their day lives and more. Once at the comforts of your hotel, relax and recover from any jet lag.

Day 2 Sinharaja: About 2.5 Hours Trek X 2 trips

Rainforest Edge

As the daylight touches the land, you will come to realize that you are in the midst of Sinharaja, Sri Lanka’s last

viable area of primary tropical rainforest. More than sixty percent of the trees are endemic and many of them are

considered rare. There is much endemic wildlife, especially birds, but the reserve is also home to over fifty percent

of Sri Lanka's endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare

amphibians.

Enjoy both a morning and evening private bird watching trek lead by a naturalist guide.

Day 3 Sinharaja - Galle - Mirissa: About 4.5 Hours Drive

Mandara Resort

Sigiriya/Polonnaruwa/Sigiriya: About 4 Hours Drive

Sigiriya Village

Today you will be returning to the coast of Sri Lanka. We suggest you break the journey to explore the local

wonders of the UNESCO World Heritage 17th century Dutch fort. The ancient port city of Galle is Sri Lanka's oldest

living city and retains a unique old-world atmosphere. In this maze of cobbled pathways lined by petit town houses,

you will get lost, but that is the very intension.

Continue south to the bay of Mirissa. During the drive witness a curious feature - the stilt fishermen of Weligama

who carefully balance themselves before casting their fishing lines.

Day 4 Mirissa: About 5 Hours Boat Cruise

Mandara Resort

One of Sri Lanka’s finest secrets is that the town of Mirissa, is one of the world’s best locations for watching blue

and sperm whales as well as pods of dolphins. This is because the continental shelf is closer to surface at this

point and hence, it is more likely to sight the world’s largest animal in nature.

Set off early morning on your expedition accompanied by the local naturalist guide – Anoma. As you set off on the

boat cruise listen out to the cacophony of tunes created by spinner dolphins, travelling in pods. In deeper waters

you will spot the blue whales travelling in groups. As you venture further out are the sperm whales that travel in

solitude with a few others. This makes Sri Lanka arguably the best place in the world to sight both blue and sperm

whales together. Don’t forget your camera to catch their tails flip.

After an exciting experience return to the hotel and spend the afternoon at leisure

Day 5 Mirissa - Yala: About 4 Hours Drive + About 3 Hours Jeep Safari

Chaaya Wild

Today you will be heading east to the jungles of Yala. You will soon learn that the Yala game park is famous for

the elusive leopard and has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world. The sloth bear and Asian

elephant who are also part of Sri Lanka’s Big Five can be spotted. Having said that, Yala has much more to share

– wild bears, peacocks, wild buffalo, sambar and spotted deer. In addition, up to 130 species of birds have been

recorded at Yala, many migratory, including the white winged black tern, curlews and pintails. Indigenous species

include jungle fowl, hornbills and orioles.

With luck you will witness all these creatures over an evening jeep safari with a naturalist guide.

Day 6 Yala: About 3 Hours Jeep Safari X 2 Trips

Chaaya Wild

Set out again on a morning and evening jeep safari accompanied by a naturalist guide to cover other areas of the

extensive Yala National Park such as the five lakes. The five lakes are namely Yoda Wewa, Tissamaharama

Wewa, Debara Wewa, Pannagamuwa Wewa and Weerawila Wewa. This safari is a unique opportunity to observe

rural agrarian life which is revolving around these water bodies. This visit will enlighten you on the traditional

irrigation methods, including intricate canals, channels, locks, some of which are centuries old. You will also have

the opportunity to observe various endemic and migratory birds visiting these water bodies. Look out for lotus filled

lakes teeming with pelicans, herons, kingfishers, paradise fly catchers and importantly a specific area where you

will see trees filled with huge fruit bats on the banks of Tissamaharama Wewa. While most of the drives around the

lakes will be on the lake bunds, one will have an opportunity to take a brief walk on one of these bunds to observe

paddy cultivation aided by these huge manmade water bodies.

During your lunch break, you will come to realize that your residence Chaaya Wild, is in fact bordering the Yala

Wildlife Sanctuary as well as the Indian Ocean. Spanning 10 acres of jungle and endless miles of beach, the

Chaaya Wild is truly a nature resort of untamed beauty.

Set out in the afternoon for another exciting game drive.

Walawe Ganga. The park is home to an estimated 500 elephants, best spotted by the river or streams and

reservoirs. Other wildlife includes wild buffalo, sambar deer, mongooses, bandicoots, foxes, water monitors,

crocodiles, and even the occasional sloth bear and leopard.

Your night’s residence will be at the exclusive luxury camping which is set up within wilds of the game park and

offers an all-inclusive service. To set the mood, take an evening elephant safari.
