STUDENT LIFE We want you to get the most from your time with us and enjoy the best possible college experience, that means great lessons, excellent teachers and of course fantastic results. But we know that there’s more to being a student than just hard work, it’s also about building friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Student life is a time for developing new skills, opening your eyes to opportunities and building a brighter future, both in and outside the classroom. At SRC Bede Sixth Form we bring lessons to life with lots of educational visits and trips, you can have your say by joining the Students’ Union and throughout the year we organise lots of activities and events.

You’ll also be encouraged to join in our enrichment activities. It’s all very student led, but recent clubs and societies have included:A climbing club, first aid sessions, sign language classes, sports clubs, climbing, debate groups, gym sessions, music and film clubs.

ART & DESIGNTake a look around, everything you see has been designed by someone from the pattern on your clothes to the design of the phone in your pocket. Studying Art and Design offers you the chance to explore your own creativity, develop your ideas, think critically and learn to express yourself artistically withgrowing expertise.

WHAT WILL YOU DO? You’ll explore different types of media from drawing and painting to textiles, ceramics, sound and film. Learning through workshops and demonstrations you’ll explore different materials to suit your creative style. Visiting national and international galleries, you’ll consider ways of getting your work out to an audience and see your own work exhibited.

You need:A keen interest in art plus an Art GCSE grade A*-B is recommended.

What’s next?You could go on to study Fine Art or a related subject at university. Future careers could include graphic design, interior design, creative direction, product and set design.

A LEVELSCLASSICAL CIVILISATIONStudying Classical Civilisation offers you the chance to delve into the ancient world, carrying out further research to discover the history, literature and lifestyle of ancient Greeks and Romans.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll read about Ancient Greek comedy, laugh at the crude humour and consider how it fits into contemporary politics and history. You’ll study Odysseus’ journey home from Troy; exploring the mythology and the irrationality of the Gods, Greek tragedies, and Virgil’s Roman epic, the Aeneid, investigating heroism and Roman culture.

You need:A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or aboveincluding English, English Language orEnglish Literature.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Economics is essentially the study of who gets what, so on this course you’ll look at the allocation of jobs, wealth and resources in the UK and on a worldwide scale. Lessons are dynamic and you can expect to analyse and suggest solutions to the economic problems of the day.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll develop a greater understanding of linguistics, exploring the use of everyday language through a variety of media. You’ll discover how children learn language as well as exploring how language has changed over time.

What’s next?English Language students move on to a wide range of courses at university. Future careers can include anything from working in education to psychology, journalism to marketing.

GEOGRAPHY Looking at the relationship between people and the environment this course will help you to develop an understanding of some of the most pressing challenges facing society today from climate change to food security.

ENGLISH LITERATUREStudying English Literature offers the chance to explore other people’s lives and different societies, both real and imagined, through the thoughts, knowledge and words of great writers. It offers the chance to explore different worlds, times and issues of the day, through the eyes of another.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Reading a variety of both modern and classic texts you’ll discover how great writers have explored the facts of our existence, who we are, who we might be, how we live and how we might live. You’ll learn to think and read precisely, and to express your own thoughts accurately both in speech and the written word.

You need: A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including English Literature.

What’s next?You could go on to a variety of university courses in areas such as English, law or media/journalism. Future careers include teaching, journalism, public relations and management or you could work in a museum, library, theatre or cultural organisation.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll be encouraged to investigate issues affecting our environment today, not just by learning the theory but by getting out there and seeing the results for yourself. Fieldwork is an integral part of the course, exploring the local region to study hydrological change and rural settlement. You’ll also get the chance to visit Chamonix in the French Alps to study glacial landforms and their management.

A LEVELSHISTORYHow did the Nazi Party get into power? What was the Wall Street Crash and how did America recover from it? History is more than learning about historical events; we challenge interpretations of the past so that we can understand how events of the past shaped our lives today. This is an exciting and varied course which will give you the skills and knowledge to succeed in higher education or the workplace.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?O?Learning through group work, individual research, presentations and debates, you’ll cover areas including Britain 1918-1997, America: Boom, Bust and Recovery, Nazi Germany, and The Witch Craze, along with history from the 17th to the 20th Century.

You need:GCSE English Language grade C or above. GCSE History is not essential but recommended.

What’s next?You could go on to study history or a related subject at university and go on to a future career in areas such as law, politics, teaching, museum or library work or journalism.

LAWThe law governs everything we do and will affect everyone’s life at some stage whether that be buying a house or setting up your own business. If you are keen to learn more, whether you hope to become a solicitor or barrister, or just find the law fascinating, this course will develop your legal knowledge along with skills in critical analysis and problem solving.

At the click of a button, or the swipe of a screen, we can instantly record those picture perfect moments. But with a good eye and some technical skills those nice snaps can soon become a piece of art.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?On our Photography (lens and light based media) course you’ll produce practical and critical work in areas such as portraiture, landscape photography, still life, documentary photography, photojournalism, experimental imagery, photographic installation and film.

You need:GCSE Art and Design or Photography wouldbe advantageous.

What’s next?Studying photography could lead to a degree in the arts, with future careers including photojournalism, commercial photography, animation, film, and television. Picture that!

MEDIA STUDIESThe media has become part of our everyday lives. It informs us, entertains us and can even influence our views on the world, often without us even realising it. The media is a dynamic, vibrant and, due to advancements in technology, often instant industry, that offers lots of exciting career opportunities.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?This course will enable you to examine the power of the media, its regulation, genres, and audience, while also developing practical skills by creating your own media products for television, magazine and the film industry.

You need:GCSE English grade C or above is preferable.

What’s next?Choosing Media Studies could lead to a range of exciting opportunities in both education and work, you could go on to be a journalist, producer, researcher, or maybe work in marketing and advertising.

PSYCHOLOGYPsychology is the scientific study of human and non-human behaviour, with a focus on experimental testing, statistical analysis and critical discussion. Psychologists share one core belief: evidence is crucial.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll study and explore a wide range of areas including brain damage, memory, social influence, gender development and addiction using a variety of research methods. The course includes a strong element of mathsand science.

You need: GCSE maths and English Language grade Cor above.

What’s next?Studying psychology can lead to a range of higher education and specialised career opportunities such as forensics, educational or clinical psychology. It could also lead to careers in the medical professions, teaching or even marketing, after all it’s all about understanding your customer.

PHYSICSIf you enjoy learning what makes up the physical world around us then studying physics is a great choice for you. Our innovative and interactive approach to the subject will give you the chance to see how physics can improve people’s lives and how it is used in engineering and technology today.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Covering everything from biomechanics and motion, to solar cells on spacecraft, particle physics to electromagnetism and earthquakes, you’ll develop a sound understanding of the physical world at a fundamental level while also building your problem solving and analytical skills.

A LEVELSRELIGION, PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS By practising philosophy, humanity is able to ask itself the most profound questions relating to life on earth. How should we live? How can we decide what is the right thing to do? How can we make sense of our most intense experiences? Many people don’t want to consider these questions but if you take Religion, Philosophy and Ethics then you are different – you are willing to open your mind and consider really deep questions.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll look at key questions of philosophy and theology through discussions, question and answer sessions, activities and debate. You’ll be challenged to think critically not only about other people’s beliefs but also your own, developing the ability to logically appraise opinions, arguments and conclusions.

You need:A questioning mind along with GCSE English Language, History or Religious Studies grade C or above.

You’ll choose from a range of topics including families and relationships, youth subcultures and education. HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE (CTEC)If you have not got your health, what have you got? On this stimulating course, you will explore questions such as: How does a major life change, such as bereavement, impact on individuals? How do you become an effective communicator? You can also design your own research project into a topic of your choice.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?You’ll learn through practical tasks, individual study and research covering areas such as what it means to be healthy, factors that affect the quality of life, communication, individuals’ needs and your responsibility as a health professional.

You need:GCSE maths and English Language grade C or above are preferred.

What’s next?Many of our students go on to universityor training in the health and socialcare industries such as nursing,midwifery or social work.

These courses are the equivalent of a single A level and will fit into a timetable alongside other programmes.

ICT (CTEC)We all use technology every day whether at school, work or at home. It is at the heart of everyday life from computer graphics and control systems to communications and problem-solving.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?This vocational course combines hands-on practical activities with more traditional written work to develop your understanding of IT and related topics, with the opportunity to learn about areas such as computer systems, information systems, digital graphics, game programming and web development.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Focusing on the study of sport and exercise science, you’ll take part in theory and practical sessions covering a range of topics and activities. You’ll learn about anatomy, physiology and psychology linked to sport and exercise. You’ll also learn about sports coaching, fitness training and testing.

You need:A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above including English Language or an appropriate Level 2 qualification. You must also have a keen interest and active involvement in sport.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?As a Music Technology student you’ll cover many aspects of the recording and sound industry, examining traditional sound recording techniques, recording different instruments and sounds, and improving your listening skills. You’ll record musicians, bands and soloists and develop your own skills as an engineer and producer. Our students have worked with signed bands on music videos, live gigs and TV and film soundtracks for major companies such as BBC and Sky.

You need:A minimum of five GCSEs grade C or above and preferably a GCSE in music or an instrument grade from a recognisedawarding body.

What’s next?You could expand your skills by moving onto a relevant university degree or apprenticeship. Future careers could include studio work,music production or working as asound technician.

PUBLIC SERVICESDo you have the discipline and determination it takes to work in the public service industries? Find out by signing up to one of our courses. Focusing on key services including fire rescue, the police, ambulance, prison, customs and excise and the armed forces you’ll be given a realistic introduction to what working life is really like in the uniformed services and get the skills to prepare you for this type of work.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?Lessons include a mix of classroom based study and outdoor activities, expeditions and group work. You’ll learn about the demands of working in the different service industries, sport and recreation, improving health and fitness, navigation skills, as well as communication skills, team work, time management and problem solving.

SUCCESS

GRACEA future in the creative industries is one step closer for Grace. The 18-year-old will now study a degree in Production design for Stage and Screen after getting the A level grades she was hoping for at SRC Bede Sixth Form.

The former Northfield School student got A grades in Art and Media and a B in Psychology. She’s hoping to go on to work in theatre design and props.

“I really enjoyed my time at SRC Bede and now I’ve got on the specific course I wanted.

“SRC Bede was recommended to me and they were right. The teachers are really supportive and it makes you feel at home, safe and happy.”

JAMESHard work and dedication has paid off for SRC Bede student James (left). A string of A*s has secured his place at the University of Oxford.

“It feels pretty good,”said the former St Michael’s Catholic Academy student who got top results in A level maths, further maths and chemistry. He also got an A* in his extended project, making it a full house.

“I was hoping for these grades and my teachers believed in me.

“At the start of the year I wasn’t sure where I was going and now I’m going to Oxford University tostudy maths!”

JACKSRC Bede Sixth Form studentJack (right) is also Oxford University-bound after picking up a clean sweep of A*s in A level biology, maths and physics. The 18-year-old now plans to continue his studies in biology with a view to pursuing a future career in ecology or conservation.

Admitting to feeling a few nerves when it came to results day, the former Northfield School student said:

“ I still can’t believe it, three A*s! I don’t think it will hit me until later on”Fortunately for Jack, who earlier in the year took home a gold medal at the British Biology Olympiad, top results proved there was no need to worry.

SEANA level results day proved cause for celebration for 17-year-old Sean (left). The SRC Bede student outperformed all expectations, picking up an A* in geography and A grades in history and geology.

“I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much and jinx it, but when I opened my results I couldn’t believe it.”Hoping to one day become a teacher himself, Sean is now off to Teesside University to study history.

“I’ve had the best time here and the staff have inspired me to go into teaching.”

JONATHANAsk Jonathan what the best thing is about studying at SRC Bede Sixth Form and he’s got a list. The teachers, the staff, and the support you receive, are just a few. But top of the 18-year-old’s list is the respect.

“Everyone treats you with respect and while always offering plenty of encouragement and support, you’re given the opportunity to flourish as an independent learner.”It all proved a winning combination for Jonathan who achieved A grades in English literature and English language and an A* in history. The former St Michael’s Academy student is now off to study history at the University of York.
