Three for three. That’s what the Oakville atom BB Hornets are so far this
season in girls’ hockey tournament play, following a champi-onship performance at the recent Waterloo Ravens Fall Challenge Cup.
Oakville, which also won titles at its own Harvest Classic and the Clearview Ice Cats competition in Nottawasaga earlier this season, won all five of its games at the Waterloo tourna-ment without allowing a single goal.
In round-robin action, the Hornets outscored their oppo-nents 16-0 on the way to four straight wins. Oakville then blanked the host Ravens 2-0 in the final, with Brooke Eyram posting her third shutout of the tournament. Victoria McGarrity scored in the third period to break a scoreless tie, and Jackie Murray added an insurance marker.
“The girls have worked extremely hard throughout the first two months of the season, and I am extremely proud of each one of them,” said Hornets head coach Gerry Bouwman.
“To win three tournaments in a row is a difficult feat.”
Other members of the atom BB Hornets are Katie Bouwman, Fiona Gervin, Claire Gosse, Alex Levert, Maddyx Lindsay, Julia Longhurst, Natasha Melhuish, Payton Merkley, Selena Monardo, Paige Murray, Gabrille Noordijk, Ella Walker, Emma Stevens and Katie Stone.
Andrew McGarrity, Rob Gosse and Jeff Longhurst
also coach the team, and Cynthia Lindsay is the trainer.
Novice A team claims silver
The novice A Hornets reached their division final in the same tournament, settling for silver with a 5-0 loss to the Cambridge Roadrunners.
Oakville qualified for the final by winning one round-robin game and tying the three others. The Hornets’ win came over the London Devilettes (8-2), with the draws coming against the Clarington Flames (3-3), Etobicoke Dolphins (1-1) and North York Storm (2-2).
Cassidy Mallette was named team MVP in the final. Other Hornets include Alex Crich, Ava Walker, Avery Spence, Breanna Lombardo, Cassidy Mallette, Ella Jackson, Kathryn Zuliani, Olivia Hunt, Paige Oliver, Rachel Hamburg, Reese Oliver, Reichen Kirchmair, Stephanie Stainton, Sydney O’Leary, Tatum Martino, Taya Balfour and Taylor Stanford. Coaches are Brad Arsenault, Jeff Crich, Mike Kirchmair and Jordan Currie.

wanted. And beating a team that was in Tier 1 last year, it’s a big win for us.”
In addition to a height disadvantage, the Raiders also lack a single club player, making their success that much more remarkable. Szpakowski said his team has shown an ability to overcome the odds all season.
“Small but mighty,” Szpakowski said. “They call us the small school with the big heart and this team really reflects that. They’ve got the heart of a lion.”
The Raiders’ opponent also showed some heart in reaching the final.
“These guys came a long way in six weeks,” said Trailblazers coach Marie Guest. “Aquinas is a good team and we lost that game by inches.”
In the opening week of the season, Iroquois Ridge lost to Abbey Park, a team that went on to finish 2-8. After the opening-week loss, the Trailblazers reeled off eight straight victories until having their streak snapped by Aquinas in the final week of the regular season.
Like Aquinas, Iroquois Ridge lacks club experience. Only former competitive swimmer Owen Scarrow, in his first year of club volleyball, plays outside of high school.
Guest said the team’s passing and serving improved dramatically over the course of the season, and Onkar Bedi provided leadership.
Jon Moate helped the Trailblazers with a strong attack Monday as well.
wasn’t finished until the playoffs began.“We have to say thanks to Emily Carr (Public School)
down the street that let us use their gym,” said Lorenz. “Our kids were walking 15 minutes to practice every day. It was good commitment, a good bunch of guys… They put in their time and they deserved to be (in the final).”
Lorenz credited setter Jared Hines for steady improvement throughout the season and Endi Xherro for on-court leadership. Howie, who delivered a number of impressive skills Monday, was also integral to the club’s success.
“Some of those guys were strong players at White Oaks last year. They can play,” Peter Szpakowski said. “They’re a team we’ll have issues with down the road in senior.”
