Saturday 17th January 2015 Kick Off: 15:00
West Didsbury & Chorlton
The Gaffer
Good afternoon and welcome to The Royal British Le-
gion Stadium for this afternoons home league fixture
against West Didsbury & Chorlton FC. First of all may I
welcome the management team and all associated with the club. I
hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.
Despite the weather on Thursday night we had a really good training
session at the ground. 17 players turned up and gave their all in hor-
rendous conditions, something that those involved in today’s game
will also have to do. As part of the training session we also had a dis-
cussion about how we’ve done so far this season and more im-
portantly where we want to go from our current position. No specific
targets were set but the message of ‘kicking on’ and not being satis-
fied where we are at the moment was one area we discussed. Com-
pared to the previous seasons were in a far healthier position but I
feel it’s vital that we finish the season strong and continue to work
hard so that the spirit and morale within the camp isn’t disrupted.
Today’s game will be a very tough encounter. We had 2 close games
against them last year with both sides winning home fixtures. I hope
that is the same today, but when we meet again in a few week’s time
we come away with at least a point from the game.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home
league fixture…..

Squires Gate made it one loss in sixteen with a 1-1 draw against St
Helens on Saturday. The draw means the club continue their impres-
sive run but was described by manager Dave McCann as a disappoint-
ing draw.
Gate made two changes to the starting line up from Saturdays 2-2 draw
with Nelson, Alex Mckendrick and Michael Hall coming in for suspend-
ed Chris Anderson and Rob Henry who has left the club. Gate chances
were also boosted by the return of wingers Harry Dunn and Billy
Mckenna both returning from injury to make the bench.
It was clear that the elements would play a part in the game as just
minutes in the wind caught hold of a cross into the box from Alex
Mckendrick causing the St Helens keeper to tip the ball over the ball.
Like the last couple of weeks Gate came out in the first half full of ener-
gy and with lots of possession of the ball. They had a golden chance to
go ahead with just 5 minutes on the clock , Mark Buchan sent in behind
but his chip fell straight into the arms of the onrushing goal keeper.
Shortly after it was Buchan's striker partner, Alex Murphy, who had the
next chance but his drive from the edge of the box was tipped wide for
a corner. It was from the resulting corner
that Gate would open the scoring, the
ball whipped into a crowded penalty ar-
ea and with several players taking sev-
eral stabs at the ball, Mark Buchan final-
ly found the back of the net. Gate didn't
sit back after opening the scoring and
looked to carry on attacking St Helens.
Sean Holmes having two sepa-
rate chances to double Gates
lead the first coming from a free
kick but his header floated over
the ball the second saw only a
last gasp challenge on the edge
of the box deny him. Gate keeper
Ben Fletcher had little to do in
the first half but when he was
called upon he was more than
ready. St Helens best chance of
the first half came direct from a free kick, this like several times in the
game saw the balls direction change but Fletcher was more than ready
to make the save.
Into the second half and Mike Hall had the chance to open his account
for the club but his drive from outside the box feel straight into the arms
of the goal keeper. It was fair to say that this game was a typical game
of two halves with the second being St Helens. It was St Helens who
would have most of the chances in the second half and they would
make the pressure count. On the 64 th minute James Rushton - Woods
stepped up to curl a pearl of a free kick into the top corner to St Helens
level. It would be fair to say that this knocked the home sides confi-
dence and they struggled to get back into the game. Neither team could
find a winning goal and both sides will be happy with a point after the
second half performances.
After the game Gate boss Dave McCann reflected on a fair point and a dominant first half performance. Dave said; Overall I thought a point for each side was fair but it doesn't take away how disappointed we are with it. We dominated the 1st half and played some good stuff but never
really tested their keeper enough. Our 2nd half performance cost us, credit to St Helens they were a lot better but in reality we weren't up to the standards of our 1st half performance and in the end they deserved
a point.

West Didsbury & Chorlton
Manager: Andy Nelson Ground:
Meet today’s visitors; West Didsbury & Chorlton
West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC have come a long way in their 105 years since 1908 when the club was founded as Christ
Church A.F.C. by Mr R F Hartley. West played friendlies at first and then in the Manchester Alliance League until the First World
War 1914. After the War the club joined the Lancashire and Cheshire League for the 1920/21 season and had to change its
name to West Didsbury AFC, as that League did not permit a name suggesting association with any other body.
The home ground from before 1914 until the mid 1980’s was Christie Playing Fields, and then the owners, Manchester and Sal-
ford Playing Fields Society, gave the club notice to quit having decided to sell off the land for commercial development – now
ironically called ‘Christie Fields’ office park.
After several years’ nomadic existence searching for a new home, the club acquired the redundant and overgrown Recreation
Ground at Brookburn Road in 1996, and began to restore this to active use and develop a vision for a community club. Work
was completed in time to start the 1997-98 season using excellent new changing rooms and clubhouse facilities aided by a Lot-
tery grant, new sponsors and members’ fundraising, but without a penny from the Playing Fields Society sale proceeds.
Further name change followed in 2003 to reflect the new location in Chorlton and the club was then elected to the Manchester
League in 2006. In 2007/8 West won its first Manchester League silverware lifting the Murray Shield in the last game of our cen-
tenary year. That team was the nucleus of the previously successful junior team and the following season 2008/09 West just
missed promotion to the Premier Division and again reached the Murray Shield Final. With a new management team led by
Andy Nelson, 2009/10 was very successful and honours spread throughout the club. The 1st team won the Murray Shield (the
third consecutive year in the final) and was league runners-up. The reserves won the Bridgewater League Cup and the U17
Youth team won their League.
In 2010/2011 the 1st team won the Manchester League First Division title in style with a fantastic 65 points out of 72 possible.
This ranks as one of the highest points totals per game in Manchester League history dating back over a century. The clubs re-
serve team and youth teams also had terrific seasons, resulting in promotion and for the second year reaching the Bridgewater
Cup Final.
The Youth team reached yet another final where they were just pipped to the trophy by New Mills. The Veterans were runners
up in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans League and then started a second veterans team such was the interest in
the club. Plans were also made to formally integrate junior football as the club Vision is to be a FA Charter Standard Community
Club, playing at the highest possible level it can whilst remaining financially viable.
Further improved saw floodlights erected in 2011 to meet FA requirements and West competed in the FA Vase for the first time
in 2011-2012 as a Step 7 club. Election to the NWCFL followed in June 2012 and the club had an incredible first season winning
the Div1 Trophy, finishing in 3rd position after an amazing run in during March and April to secure promotion and also winning a
guaranteed FA Cup place. The over 45’s team again chipped in with Cheshire Veterans league silverware. 2013-14 saw the club
meet a number of challenges on and off the field by recovering from a series of early season setbacks and defeats in August to
consolidate with a very creditable 12th place league finish. Two new stands were installed to improves the spectator facilities,
new grass pitches and youth teams were added as part of the long term development plan, whilst remaining as a volunteer run,
‘not for profit’ club.
The other historic milestones achieved during the season were the 2-0 home victory over Abbey Hey in the club’s first ever ap-
pearance in the FA Cup followed by a 2-1 first ever FA Vase victory away at NCEL Rossington Main near Doncaster in mid Sep-
tember.
This season the club has had an erratic start in the League and lost to Brighouse Town from the Evo Stik League [North] in the
FA Cup at the end of August having been given a walk over by the FA in the previous round against new NWCFL club, Cammell
Laird 1907.

WEST DIDSBURY:
The story so far...
SATURDAY 8TH FEBRUARY 2014
SQUIRES GATE 1-0 WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON
In the first ever meeting between the two sides, West Didsbury travelled to
The Royal British Legion Stadium hoping to make a name for themselves to
the spectators watching on. As expected, the game had a slow start as the
sides were starting to get used to each other, but it was the newbies that
started to take the game to Squires Gate and came close as Craig Carney
had a 30 yard effort saved by Paul Hughes. Another effort later on as West
Didsbury’s Mark Woodcock, who had just come on as a sub, beat the Gate
defenders and hit the crossbar. The hosts went into half time with no hope at
all, with the win in their favour, control became a lottery as passes went be-
yond the forwards. It took 63 minutes for Squires Gate to find the break-
through, with the goal coming from Jack Sowerby, as he picked the ball up
near the half way line and powered his way into the box as if the defenders
weren’t there and fired away a worthy match winning goal.
SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY 2014
WEST DIDSBURY & CHORLTON 2-1 SQUIRES GATE
Gate travelled to South Manchester for their reverse fixture with
West Didsbury, and the two teams had faced each other 2 weeks
before. Gate were the first team to get a shot on target after just
8 minutes, when Seydou Bamba tested the home goal keeper.
However, after 22 minutes it was the hosts who took the lead as
Didsbury’s Graham Kay pounced on a loose ball after a cruel
deflection and tapped the ball past Rodgerson. Both teams were
struggling to control much play and even the simplest of passes
was swerving and bobbling in every direction apart from its in-
tended target.
The second half saw West Didsbury double their lead though
Matthew Kay, and it looked like the game was all over. Until the
70th minute when Jack Sowerby fired home to make it 2-1. Howev-
er, it was not quite enough to get Gate a point.
