Intro to Squids• Invertebrate = no
backbone• Belongs to the class Cephalopoda– Head-footed– Brain is right above the
tentacles with the heart and digestive system at the top
– Includes cuttlefish and octopus
• Carnivores• Ranges from size of
thumb nail to 20 meters long
• Squid Video
Squid External Structure
• Beak = ripping apart meat
• Tentacles• Mantle = takes in and
ejects water from a siphon to help the squid move
• Chromatophores = cells with pigment for color change
• Color change cuttlefish video
Squid Internal Structure
• Ink sac = releases ink for defense
• Gills• 3 Hearts = 1 main
heart & a heart near each of the 2 gills
• Pen = internal shell providing support
External Structures• You will work with your lab partner to identify the
external structues.• DO NOT OPEN THE BAG with your squid in it…
we will deal with that mess tomorrow.• Put your names on the bag so you get the same
one tomorrow.• You should be able to complete the following
sections of Part 1:– 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
• At the end of class, put your squid back (which should still be in the sealed bag) into the 5th period box.
• If you finish early, read through the procedure for tomorrow so you can get started right away!
