Dear WA Squash Community,

I must apologize for not writing for the past few months, I've been recovering from a medical

event and happy to report my recovery is going well and hope to be playing again in the next

few months.

Our AGM was held over Zoom and a terrific turn out, great to see so many Clubs and

Members Zoom in. A bit of shuffling on the Board and congratulations to Leigh-Anne Kaye

who is now Vice President and Katy Scott who is Secretary. I would like to thank Trevor

Cruickshank (Previously Vice President) and Deb Hoffrichter (Previously Secretary) for all

their efforts. Both Trevor and Deb remain on the Board. Neil Butler remains as the

Treasurer.

It is fair to say not all levels of administration are aligned in their vision. The goal of this

review process is to start the conversation and ideally come up with some clear parameters

on what WA Squash will deliver for its Members. We are hopeful to meet with the majority

of Clubs Committee by the end of July, we will then consolidate the information which will

be discussed with Members in August.

Dean and Sue remain as busy as ever, would like to thank

them on the continued communication with our Members

and specifically Dean’s management of the COVID

situation.

I hope you and your family are safe and sound and have taken the opportunity to get back

on to the Squash court. So pleased to see competition will resume this month ... it never

ceases to amaze me how passionate our squash community is.

There are 5 levels of administration in Squash, Court Owners, Centre Operators, Clubs, State

Body and National Body, not to mentioned the many Committees, National and State bodies

that provide grants with expectations.

The Board has set up a strategic review group, this group have been joining Club Committee

meetings where possible, our aim is to meet with all Clubs that are willing to have us! It's a

big task, and we are enjoying it immensely. Each Club is uniquely different but the one

common theme is the genuine passion for Squash. The purpose of these meetings is to

engage in open and honest discussion on how we can collectively serve squash better.

Dean’s DiaryDean W

It goes without saying just how good it is to see centres full again after a very short time

shutdown due to that horrid virus. If anyone had said back in March that by mid-June we

would be back in business, firstly, I would have said there is no chance and secondly, I was

sure that we would not be able to contain this virus which we have done so well and now we

are reaping the rewards … so well done to everyone !!

In keeping with my theme of a touring professional squash player for over 15 years from

1976 to 1991, I was thinking during lock down just how lucky I was and how much I loved

what I did and one of the loveliest stories was when I was asked to do an exhibition in Zurich

at the opening of a wonderful indoor squash and tennis centre called VITIS.

This venue held the lucrative Swiss Masters for many years. I was in London and the call

came through would I like to do this and the deal was done and Pam and I decided to get the

fast train from London to Paris and then on to Zurich.

So the match with Qamar was very entertaining, the crowd loved all the antics and there was

no shortage of nick shots and lots of banter.

In the change rooms before the match Tiriac (by the way a very good tennis player as he won

the 1970 French Open Doubles and semis of Wimbledon as well that year and is a Billionaire

from Romania) came up to me and said that I had better make Vilas look good as he had

never played squash before but being a great tennis champion he should be OK but make

him look very good … I was sort of threatened with this as Tiriac is a pretty scary guy with a

moustache that made him look like a Mexican gun slinger !!

All the time whilst we were warming up I had Tiriac's voice in

my head to make him look good. The match was great fun

and I put the ball onto his racket, over hit shots so they

would come off the back wall etc so as Vilas would run down

The name VITIS was made up of 3 well known tennis players … Guillermo Vilas (The V.I.) Ion

Tiriac (the T.I.) and Tim Sturdza (The S. ) and I was to play Qamar Zaman in the best of 3 and

then both Qamar and I would play Vilas.

I then had to play Vilas and we went straight back on to an incredible roar as he was a

seriously lovely guy, very fit and strong and had just come off losing the Final of the French

Open to Mats Wilander in 4 sets as well as being joint ranked number one in the world in

1977 with Borg and now in 1982 ranked 4th.

He really was a great guy. I saw him many years later at the Oz Open tennis and we had a

chat and a drink or two ... it was so nice he remembered that night and it certainly made

every ball. At the end of the one game when he fell into the corner exhausted he turned to

me and said that this game is seriously hard!!

That night at dinner he felt sorry for Pam and I that we had to get the train back to London

and he flicked his fingers and his manager came running and he disappeared only to come

back in an hour with 2 first class Swiss Air tickets back to London!!

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

WA Squash : : July 2020 EditionSWAN By Sue Hillier

Coaches Tim Cowell, Lindsay Crane and Sean

Brockman were visiting schools before COVID-19,

exposing primary students to our game. These

coaches take 2 inflatable courts to a school

coaching students through some skills and game play, adjusting the plans for each age group

whilst educating them on the Healthway message ‘Squash is Smarter than Smoking’.

The students have a great time and love the Inflatable courts. Tim Cowell covers all the

schools North of Perth and Brennan Pratt (from the well-known Narrogin Squash family) has

taken over from Lindsay covering the schools in the South. Sean continues to do the

schools in the Busselton-Dunsborough area.

If you would like WA Squash to visit your children’s

school please contact Sue Hillier at

[email protected]

WA Squash would like to thank Healthway ‘Smarter

than Smoking’ for their continued sponsorship.

With restrictions lifted WA Squash have a record

number of schools signing up for the FREE

‘Smarter than Smoking’ Inflatable Squash

Program in the metro and Busselton areas.

WA Squash are pleased to announce that Stewart Boswell will travel to Perth in early 2021

for a weekend to run a camp for our top U23 players. Squash Australia have agreed to pay

for Stewart’s airfare which will reduce the cost paid by our players/parents immensely. WA

Squash have invited our top U23 players and hope that along with their coaches will attend

the weekend to gain some valuable information and/or to confirm they are on the right

track. The date will be dependent on COVID-19 restrictions.

Squash Australia ran a High Performance camp for Australian Juniors in January this year.

The camp was run by National Coach, Stewart Boswell along with Performance Pathway

Manager, Jenny Duncalf at Carrara in the Gold Coast. A few of our top juniors and their

parents made the decision to attend the camp at their own cost.

This event will be open to any qualified coach so they can gain some more education in

coaching squash – please contact Sue Hillier at should you be

interested.

Life Member Profile

Del MazzucchelliIn keeping with ourtheme of getting toknow our wonderfulLife Members thespotlight is on DelMazzucchelli for thisedition.

I was extremelyfortunate to have a lotto do with Del attournaments, pennants and to haveher as our State Teammanager on manyinterstate trips. Thesewere great trips andDel was highly respected as well as havinga wonderful sense of humour.

The highlight in Del's illustrious career as avolunteer was when Perth held the 4thWorld Women's Championships at the WASquash Headquarters at Curtin University.Del was the driving force for this majorevent and was on every committee whichorganised everything from media, accommodation, accreditation, practicecourts, transport, referees, draws, socialfunctions, VIP's, selling tickets, marketingand many more aspects.

The event has gone down as one of themost enjoyable the players have ever had.The event was won by the controversialplayer Vicki Cardwell (from Adelaide) whohad been banned for bad behaviour 2 yearsearlier so she wasn't able to play forAustralia in the Teams event but she couldplay as an individual. The AustralianWomen's team led by Rhonda Thorne wonthe title. So Del had a lot to deal with and

A very brief summary of Del's volunteerlife and achievements:

One of the committee of 3 who organizedthe highly successful Ladies Day League,at its peak boasting 32 divisions.

1975 – 1979 Manager of Ladies Senior andJunior State Teams. Also responsible forFund Raising.

Del's tireless work as a volunteer lasted fordecades and we still catch up with her asshe has so many lifelong friends fromsquash.

1973 Foundation Member of SquashWomen's Auxiliary. Started Squash Newsand became Publicity Officer and memberof Executive. Wrote a weekly article forThe Sunday Times.

did a superb job.

Del (and other lifemembers like AlanEast) started the WASquash news inaround 1973/4 whichwas eagerly soughtafter each month so asplayers could entertournaments and seetheir ranking and thepennant draw wasalso published in thismagazine. It was ahuge job as there wereover 70 clubs and over

3000 players playing each week inpennant. All this was done manually … nocomputers in those days!!!

The Squash Factory

Wangara is almost

back to normal,

with its junior

programs and

social days and

evenings back in

full swing. As

court

owners/operators

know, it has been

extremely hard

work for them and

their staff to keep

the centres Covid

19 compliant.

However, the hard

work has been

welcomed to get squash enthusiasts back on the court playing the sport they love. So it is good

news that WA continues to incrementally but continuously move forward with opening up

businesses and sport and recreations centres and activities.

What's next for Masters?

Friday 12 June saw a Masters Grand Re-Opening with the Battle of Brentwood. While the event

has already been held when you read this, you can look forward to some fun photos of the

evening's proceedings in the next issue of the SWAN.

Well! At last squash is back to some semblance of normality, here in WA at least. Social players

are back in droves, teams back to their training routines and pennants imminent. Great news

for the squash centre owners and operators, the players and, of course the sport.

This tournament will be held over the weekend of 25—26 July 2020. This is

an individual event, with players placed in divisions according to their

ranking. All details, and the entry form can be found on the WA Masters

website www.wamasterssquash.com

Email enquiries can be sent to

Terry Brookes on 0423 496 588.

[email protected] or contact

Entries close on Monday 20 July.

Following on from that, the Friday Night Masters season recommenced on 19 June at 7.30pm.

The cost remains at $12, which includes your squash and a sumptuous supper.

Masters 40th Anniversary Dinner/Dance 2020

Masters will be heavily subsidising the evening keeping the ticket cost to only $35 per person

which includes a delicious three course dinner. A DJ will be busy keeping us all on the dance floor

and drinks will be available at the bar (bar prices). Bear in mind that numbers will still be limited

due to residual Covid restrictions, so register your interest as soon as you can. Please email Chris

Farley or phone on 0431 837 649 if you would like to be part of this once

in 40 years celebration.

A final note:

While life is returning to 'almost normal' here in WA, spare a thought for our Masters family in

other states, where the situation is not quite the same for them. If nothing else, this pandemic

experience brings into focus the importance of staying involved, and of valuing those people and

connections we can sometimes take for granted.

The 2021 Australian Masters Championships give us all something to really look forward to;

seeing our interstate long-time friends, having some great games and enjoying the fantastic,

festive atmosphere that is always part of the event.

In the meantime, get involved in all the events WA Masters is busy organising for us. And get

back to squash and help our squash business owners and operators keep their doors open for us.

29 August 2020 – Pagoda Ballroom

WA 2020 Masters State Championships

This is a fantastic occasion to celebrate in a year that has not held much in the way of

celebration for many, so let's make it a night to indeed remember. The evening promises to be

massive, with honoured guests attending, and some notable achievements recognised.
