III PRESIDENT'S REPORT

Reflecting back to the State Convention in Wodonga in March, a l.!::=:====::::::!.1 great weekend of dancing with close to 300 in attendance.

The Convention Committee did a grand job of converting the decorations into the Western town site. The theme night certainly had some variations of the "Go West" to Wodonga.

Thanks to the Victorian Callers Assoc. and the Round Dance Assoc. of Vic. For their assistance in making the weekend with their calling and cueing and thanks to James Fellowes for looking after the First Aid requirements for the weekend after the St. John First Aid people had to withdraw their services.

During the weekend I had the privilege of presenting a "Service A ward" to Kaye Heeps and a "Life Membership Award" to Barbara Treharne. Congratulations ladies.

After the convention a number of Victorians traveled to Merimbula to join in the 17th Birthday celebrations of Sapphire Squares. Another good weekend of dancing and renewing friendships.

The National Convention is fast approaching and will look forward to seeing you on the floor in Adelaide.

August will see our Annual General Meeting. A Returning Officer has been appointed for the election of the new committee. Please give some serious consideration to becoming a member of the committee.

Planning for the Dinner Dance is progressing well. Flyers for the event should be with your caller/cuer.

The combined dance by Tiger Squares and Chemistry Sets raised over $1300 for the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal. Well done. A group of dancers from Crossroad Squares took part in the 24 hour Relay for

III

Life for the Anti Cancer $8000 in the 12 months. Keep up- the good work. ~

~ ____ PU_I_l_lt_I_TY __ . _IP_G_._T ______ ~ The Wodonga State Convention is history. Everything went smoothly and we had a lot of fun . It was nice to see a new routine to the dressed set parade. The hall decorations were excellent, in line with the theme. The Sunday night dress-up night saw us all looking our best "out West", and the Callers and Cuers contributed by presenting the music of the era. It was a very successful Convention as usual. We hope all your photo's came out well, against the backdrop of the area in the foyer, which was set aside just for this purpose.

ext, we look forward to the VSDA Annual General Meeting, which is to be held in Heidelberg on Sunday 19th August. Flyers have gone to all Clubs with details of the dance. It will be a free dance for members. Non-members pay $6.00 at the door, but they can be· ~ come a VSDA member at the door and benefit at once.

A one-year membership is only $8.00, for a three-year period it is $21.00. If you also wish to receive the SA V (Squares around Victoria) magazine, the annual fee is S22.00 and for a three year period 5)55.00. You will then receive 10 magazines per year. Registration forms can be obtained from the Membership Officer, Barbara Treharne, please phone 97765959.

The Dinner Dance Committee is well on the way to organise the Annual Dinner Dance for Friday 16th ovember. Held in the same hall (Clayton) and by the same Caterers, who have been doing a great job for the past 5 years. Same ticket prices, which has not changed since 2004. What has changed is the theme of the Dinner Dance "Floriada", which means lots of flowers, colourful and bright. There is sure to be something suitable between all those square dance dresses and skirts in the wardrobe. Otherwise there will be lots of materials to choose from this time.

RDA V's next workshop will be held on Saturday 30th June, after the National.

This year RDAV will host the Victorian Round Dance Festival on 1st, 2nd and 3,d Septem

ber 2007. Visitors from other Australian States and from New Zealand are registered to attend. A teaching couple from ew Zealand, Alex and Jennifer Kennedy will be featured to do teaching, cueing and demonstrations. The Committee is working hard to make it yet another great round dancing event.

RDA V will hold the Annual General Meeting and Christmas Dance on II th November

As you see, there is plenty of square and round dancing to look forward to, and with mao . Clubs having new dancers to teach, we wish all Callers and Cuers well and hope you can increase the number of dancers for your Clubs.

Keep smiling, it's free and contagious.

Mary Beerens, Publicity Officer.

On Saturday the 31 st of March was the RCH 12 Hour Dance. The dance has now been running for 7 years with over $10,000 being raised over those 7 years. The dance originally started as the "Dusk to Dawn dance" starting at 8pm on the Thursday of Easter Weekend and finishing at 8am Good Friday, breakfast of Bacon and eggs were had for a gold coin donation. The dance ran this way for 3 years at the Urban camp in Parkville. After the dance usually a couple of the committee took the money to the venue of

the Good Friday appeal, making it a very long night and morning. For the last 4 years the dance has been running as the "RCH 12 Hour Dance", which has ran from 2pm-2am on a chosen Saturday before the Good Friday appeal. The dance has been ran at the Braybrook community centre. Each year donations of food for the meals , supper and products that can be raffled or auctioned are collected by people on the dance committee from sponsors, over the years the dance has had sponsors that have come and gone, over the 7 years there have been over 300 sponsors and each year the sponsors receive a Certificate of Appreciation for their support. For the last 2 years the meal has been a roast and salad. The previous 2 years were a B.B.Q of sausages and hamburgers in bread. Raffles and Auctions are run through the 12 hours. This year the dance raised S 1798.65 thanks to all the support of the dancers, callers and Cuers that attended over the 12 hours.

PROPOSAL FOR A NEW NATIONAL CONVENTI ON CONSITUTI ON

Following on from the 47th Australian ational Square Dance Convention Annual General meeting the Australian ational Convention Board was charged with the responsibility fo r the Constitution and Manual.

In preparing for this it became apparent to the Board that to amend the current constitution and make it a more readable document it was extremely difficult without altering the meaning on many sections. With this in mind the Board has prepared a whole new document restructming it to provide a more user friend ly fo rmat and as directed amend it to suit the changing pace required in the modern era.

In developing the new Constitution there were still a couple of issues which require detailed discussion by the Board which will be conducted and ratified at om Annual General Meeting. These have been noted throughout the Constitution in Bold and Italics, in s~ instances noting the options available, the result and notice of which will be given a Special General Meeting.

It was also noted dming last years Annual General Meeting that a number of people wou ld prefer that the Special General Meeting be held at another time, however regrettably the time and venue cannot be altered due to the heavy programming requirements and other obligations.

Members of the Board are prepared to meet with any individual 'one on one' or as a group to discuss the constitution if required at any mutually convenient time.

With all th is summar ised the follow ing document is now presented (subject to minor numbering and/or any grammatical adjustments) for comment to you the dancers and will be presented at the Special General Meeting to be held at St. Peters Hideaway, on Thursday 7th June at 4.00 p.m. for formal adoption.

The motion wi ll be "that the existing Constitution be replaced by the document as advertised in the April 2007 edition of the South Pacific Review with the final recommendations of the Australian National Square Dance Convention Board deliberations of their Annual General Meeting."

Any interested dancer is welcome to submit any questions or suggestions to the Board for comment to this advertised Constitution. These need to be in writing to the Board Secretary, Anthea Matthews, 18 Sinai Place, LOCKRIDGE WA 6054, by the 2 1st May 2007 or alternatively attend the Special General meeting to have yom questions answered direct~

ow that the convention is over we can reflect on the good time we had. The weather was hot and we sure made use of the swimming pool at the Caravan Park. The convention was great. Good calling and cueing, good dancing. Our Dressed Set looked wonderful. The men looked really snazzie in their red braces. Good on you boys. The next weekend was busy with a demo at Kanannook Creek Celebra- ~ tion Day. 16 dancers were present and they really showed the crowd what square dancing was all about. The organization were velY pleased with our presence with a promise of a donation to our club. Thanks dancers! How lucky are we? Our hall has just installed air conditioners so weather conditions won't bother us one bit. The 31st of March saw 16 of us off to Rosebud to a one night show with Peter Humphries and then we enjoyed Speewa for Easter. Great to have visitors Erika and Karl from Germany, David and Gill and George and Rita. Thanks for the calls. BEE-ACTIVE

We are so very sorry to hear of Tony Rushton's car accident. Our deepest sympathy to Dulcie and family on their sad loss. Tony was such a nice person, he will be sadly missed.

March and April have been busy months. Reg has been running Bill's club since his recent operation, pleased to report that Bill is doing well. He was back at his club last Monday so everyone was happy to see him, he will return in full harness before too long. Last Saturday we welcomed Brad and Rosemary from Sapphire ~ Squares in Merimbula, we had a fun night with them so thank you for coming to join us. We also welcome Stu81t and Helen who have moved up from Melbourne, it is good to have you dancing with us. It was good to see Andrew back dancing as well, he is busy studying so we do not see him often. Next big dance is Campells Creek, always a good day. That is all the news for now folks, take care.

After a warm Wodonga weekend, the State Convention has again provided us all .~ with lots of enjoyable dancing. Crossroader's also enjoyed their accommodation

with a BBQ breaky, a swim in the pool and after parties in a room of your choice. We all came home safe and exhausted. The 48th National Square Dance Convention will soon be upon us, so don't put those outfits away just yet. Our Dancers raised with the kind effort of Howard and generous donation from Tony a total of$210 for the Relay for Life in support of the Anti Cancer Council. Well done everyone. A big thank you to David Brown for stepping in while Howard was in Qld. Welcome to all our visitors particularly Nev and Bev McLachlan, Diane and Tim, Evellyn and Max, and Don. Well here we are into May already. [ hope the Easter Bunny visited everyone. We have had a few visitors this month from other clubs. It was lovely to see you all and we hope you had a wonderful night. Our new group of beginners are enjoying themselves and are picking up the movements very quickly. Our youngest member Amy is dancing very well and at times has had to dance as a man for us which is not easy. Des is recovering from his hip replacement and although he's not dancing, he is still telling jokes. Sharon would like to thank Frank for doing the night for her when she had to go somewhere special with Amy. Belated Happy Birthday wishes go to ola & Amy for April. Sharon would like to thank the dancers who have been helping Joy in the kitchen since Nola's operation. Until next month gang remember, Don't Won-y, Be Happy.

Had a welcome visit from Christine Duffy (Heathcote) & her lovely calling was enjoyed by all. Not so good was the news of Bill Pendlebury being in hospital for bypass surgery. Since then I have spoken to him at the hospital and at Heathcote and he is doing a little calling but Reg is still in the saddle. Speedy recovery Bill, and likewise to Edith, Kathy, (& Agnes while in Tassy) who all had falls. Mel and Agnes otherwise enjoyed their stay in Tas & dancing with the Whitleys. A shocking end for long time friend Tony Rushton seemingly at the hands of a drug addict on their way to Speewa. He will be sorely missed. Sincere condolences to Dulcie & Simone who fortunately survived the accident. Tony had been doing our club badges for as long as I can remember. "The Don"

The State Convention is just a memory now, but Club members who attended enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to organisers on a successful event. At our St.Patrick's night, we had a guest caller, Paul's "cousin" from Ireland, who taught us some gaelic moves. All very entertaining, if a little confusing! There were plenty of shamrocks to be seen and green lollies, courtesy of Barbara, to be enjoyed. It was lovely to welcome back Ken and Joan at our Bilby night at which we also celebrated Cedric ' s 80th and Jean 's ?? birthdays. Ray recited a poem in honour of Cedric ' s octogenarian landmark, before we all helped him enjoy a cake baked and beautifully decorated by his wife, Elaine. Congratulations Cedric. Sorry that we missed the last couple of issues, but I had a computer problem due to a power surge, then had a few weeks in hospital having heart surgery. Many thanks to Reg Jordan who has been looking after the club while Bill has been in hospital and then recuperating afterwards (Bill that is - not Reg). Good to have visits from Des Devereaux and all our regular visitors from Bendigo. Irene has departed for a Canadian holiday and is planning to do some dancing while she is away. Some of us are heading to Adelaide for the National Convention, so the club will be closed on June 11 tho We are now dancing almost the complete Mainstream program.

ISLAND 8's Newhaven, Phi llip Island

Caller: Peter Humphries 97013354 ~

The month of March saw Island 8's celebrating a special birthday for Joan, and we all had a lovely night and welcomed a visit from Jenny. The following week Peter and Sandy organised a "Crispy Cream Doughnut ight" and that was most enjoyable, too. There's no way we'll dance enough to combat the delicious suppers that seem to turn up pretty regularly. We have to congratulate Maureen, a beginner, and Norma for reaching a fmal in "Australia's Got Talent" both are Tap-Dancers and although Norma wasn't a member of the troup dancing she was a very visible support throughout the act. The Speewa weekend began with tragedy on the road and we send our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the late Tony Rushton. However, the weekend went on and was blessed with fine, wann weather and good numbers. Next month will be our 13th Club Birthday and we'll look forward to welcoming all you dancers, we're working towards putting on a bigger and better weekend than ever before. L.O.W.

Sincere condolences are extended to Mary Hiriart and family on the recent death of her husband Ray. Hope all our sickies are well on the road to recovery especially Gayle. Mike has started another learners class, hopefully they will continue to enjoy themselves and get "hooked" as we all have! This was proved on Shrove Tuesday - a very hot night indeed - but our dancers still turned up and enjoyed the delicious pancakes cooked by our committee. Our A.G.M. was well attended and we welcome Chris Long to our Committee. It was a great night for the Irish - we all got into the swing of it with our green attire and Mike's Irish Lyrics. Congratulations to our President's Award recipients - Bev and David Love. Our favourite singing call night provided lots of beaut tempos - top spot went to "Beautiful Noise" followed by "El Paso City" and "Fire on the Mountain". Looking forward to celebrating our 23 rd Birthday on May 20th

One of club nights in March fell on St Patrick's day, so we had a bit of a green theme with some Irish songs and some funny songs which made them a bit Irish. It was a lot offun. The Club was closed over Easter and we were vety sad to learn of the sudden death of Tony Rushton who has been in the Square dance family for such a long time. Our thoughts go out to Dulcie, Bruce, Paul and Simone and family. Our Double Trouble night with Howard Cockburn was a great success. The hall buzzed with dancers from as far as Geelong (Russell and Maureen) and WetTibee (Tony and Mary). It was great to see so many there. PHILOSOPHY- Families are like FUDGE ..... Mostly sweet with a few nuts!! Our night with the Naracoorte dancers with a sausage sizzle and dancing was a great success. We all had a very good time and they are progressing very well, quite confident with other callers now. We have loaned them a bunch of records so they can hear different callers regularly to get used to dancing everywhere. Our next activity is a "walking progressive tea" out in Worrolong where 3 families live, so hope for good weather!! The places are about I km. apart each so have soup at Wombwells, main course at Braun and then sweets at Steeles and then walk back to Wombwell for coffee and chockies. Will be sober by then so can drive home!! Naracoorte is joining us for that as well on Sat.May 5. Are in full planning for our 24th birthday looking all over the country for halls and Mon. activities so keep Melbourne Cup Weekend free, plenty of room this year. See ya in the squares, Ginni Steele. Pine City Twirlers Inc. Only country record club in SA.

We all enjoyed our 17th birthday weekend, and judging by the smiles and laughter visitors did also - a lovely way to renew acquaintances and make new friends. Thank you to atl who came to help us celebrate, Frank Kennedy and Beryl Harcourt for their hard work in ensuring we had a great time, and also all the visiting callers. Good to have Barry Lee dance with us over the past few weeks and we wish him happy travels now that he has headed further north for the sunshine. We have decided to ban Rosemary from buying any more raffle tickets after yet another win last week, but she was sad that it wasn' t chockies this time!' Pam and George were upset to hear of the sad news of the passing away of Tony Rushton and have many happy memories of times together at Speewa. Sincere condolences go to Dulcie and family.

Our 9th birthday night was a great celebration; it was really good to have so many dancers attending just before the State Convention, thanks to all who attended. We are making our way through the A2 program and everyone is dancing very well. Speaking of the State Convention what a great tum up for the A session. Well done. There were once again three squares of A dancers, and we even got Janice up to speed so that she could dance. It was wonderful to have Nev (& Bev) McLachlan at the dance during April. It really made up for missing one of the nights due to Easter. Nev's calling was extremely interesting, challenging and loads offun. I know I certainly enjoyed dancing to it. During May, on the 17th

,

SCA will be celebrating their 200th night. We are really excited about that as when I booked the hall for the first night, I only made about half a dozen tentative bookings for the ensuing weeks. So a big thanks to those dancers who have continued to support us for almost 200 dances. Don't forget, next time you log on to the intemet why not check out the website: www.users.bigpond.net.aul

March & April have been busy months for us with the State Convention, cricket finals, Queensland trip and hosting the McLachlans. It was really great to see a lot of dancers at the Plus Session during the Convention. We had a visitor from Armadale NSW recently, Dorothy was down at a seminar and called in to say hi and dance a while. Janice also came along to give us a call, and Adrian is providing us with some interesting round dances during the evening. Congratulations to Dennis & Cheryl on the arrival of their third grandchild, a baby girl. During April we had the pleasure of having Nev & Bev stay with us and visit to SCPo It was a great night with a number of visitors including Janice & Des, Peter & Sandy, Philip & Sue and of course Adrian . I am sure all those who attended would have had a great night. Well the jackpot finally got snapped up, congratulations to Max for cleaning up and getting around S90. We better build it back up soon.

Hello everyone! From all accounts the State Convention was a great weekend. By the time this is published our 17th birthday would have come and gone. We'll update you in the next report. All of us would also like to sincerely pass on our condolences to Dulcie and family on the tragic loss of Tony. Our thoughts are with you. Our pizza night was a good night. Thanks for the support of Bendigo and Geelong (once again). We are going to attempt to run a learners class commencing in May. We were lucky to have a little write up in the Balian newspaper, as a result of a one night show that Frank Kennedy ran in the area.

Those who went to the convention all enjoyed themselves and got lots of exercise ~ both dancing and walking to and from the venue. The Cool Aid scarves were well

used. Club dances are going well - generally 2 sets of mainstreamers in the morning and extras in the afternoons. Our beginners are starting to learn the mainstream movements and we have started another new group so again have we have 3 levels of dancing in the club on the one day - which actually seems to work quite well as we have all day to dance. Round dance group is progressing well with both two step and waltz and starting to be able to do full dances without walk throughs as they are learning the movements rather than dances. Nice to see Jim along at some of the dances although not yet able to dance. Plans for our birthday weekend are underway - the raffle hamper is growing nicely. With the weather being so good lately, quite a number of our dancers have taken a few short holidays before the onset of winter but we are still doing well with attendances. As usual, our Easter bonnet night was a night full offun and laughter enjoyed by the dancers. Saturday night has introduced a Plus bracket during the evening programme which seems to be quite popular. We are dancing some of our older Classic Rounds between Squares on these nights, much to everyone's enjoyment. On a sad note, Ted Gault passed away recently and is sadly missed by all at Sunnyside.

Some of our lovely older Classics are being danced and taught. The higher level Thursday club is busy workshopping Rounds in preparation for the ational in Adelaide. Despite the hot weather, attendances have been good on Sundays when we have been dancing most levels from Ph III to V. Sunday club is celebrating its 48th birthday on Sunday 6 May and we are all looking forward to a pleasant afternoon of Round Dancing. The venue was well chosen. Congratulations also go to Ed, Sarah, Ralph, Lyn and Dianne, and all their helpers and of course all those dancers who came along to support the R.C.H. Good Friday appeal where well over 1000.00 was raised. Well done indeed . It was nice to have to have Rene and Fred call in to see us early March after Fred's serious illness, and he even had a dance with us; we hope to have them back full time soon. To write down words that seem to rhyme Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard And then you find a word like Bard! It makes you wonder how those poets of old Really fel t when they were told Why waste your time with all that rot? It didn't matter if it was good or not Someone? Always knew better and then They would tell the things that they would pen But write it down was the thing to do

. ~ Those poets did, so I do too .

The object of this challenge is to develop nine different . mathematical expressions that equal eight. You must use the digits 2, 7 and one other. And that other digit must be a 1 in the first equation, 2 in the next equation and so on, up to 9. You can use a digit once and only once in each equation.

You may use the four arithmetic symbols: plus, minus, times and divided by, as well as exponents and decimal points. You may use parentheses as you need them.

For example: Using the digits 2, 7 and 1 you can make the expressions 2+7-1 = 8.

Now try the digits 2, 3, 4 and so on up to 9.

Solution will follow next issue ...

Come to the New South Wales State Convention which is on the weekend of 3rd-Sth August 2007 Dance a while, leave with a smile

Corowa is situated in the heart of the majestic Murray River on the NSW bank, 56 kilometres west of Albury. There is much to see in the area including many well known wineries eg All Saints, Bullers, Drinkmore A wonderful array of birds and wildlife can be seen as you weave your way past centuries old redgums on bushwalking tracks and bike trails. There are excellent facilities for playing golf and lawn bowls. A glider flight at the Australian Soaring centre or a tandem skydive with Skye Dive Victoria at the Corowa Jump Stack would certainly get your adrenalin pumping . Over a century ago th is little known country town played a key role in shaping the democracy of Australia as we know it today. On a visit to the Federation Museum you can learn of the People's Convention held here in 1893 which set in motion the first steps toward nationhood. Features of the convention will be a welcome to Corowa with wine and cheese (local products) , dancing demo in the main street, dressed set parade, lucky door prizes, a raffle and plenty of dancing to please everyone and keep you on your toes. On Monday morning there will be a sausage sizzle brunch in Rowers Park before dancers leave for home having danced a while and leaving with a smile.

Beginners Classes If your club is holding a Beginners Class let me know and it will be listed FREE in the SAV. CALLERS & CUERS: Are you looking for a FREE way to advertise your beginners class to over

100,000 Victorians??? Advertise FOR FREE in The Age newspaper. Each Friday The Age has a special Entertainment Guide liftout that caters to all dance & music aspects across Victoria. MANY reasons to Square Dance

It's great fun

Exercise to music

Gets you off the couch

Meet active & fun people

Laughter, and lots of hugs

Learn a new skill

You can dance anywhere

Gets your brain working

If you ask your doctor,

he or she will say

Square Dancing burns

about 300 calories an

hour and is a good form

of mild exercise for the

body, and the head.

With thanks to Lafayette Fun Squares, indiana
