Fiam Ovidio coffee table set, available in September 2014 and retailing at Proof Living

Wow. Its our furniture and storage issue. And these are two of my most favourite topics in the worldbesides food.

That said, Im not going to trail off into a tirade of brands or materials. How you furnish is simply your call. It dictates your personality, your needs and very plainly, how you live. Many times, I have veered towards big designer brands but lately, I find mixing and matching high style and chic budget buys can offer more gratification. Its not just wallet-friendly, but these two very varying styles can bring a whole new perspective in being creative.

So, before I say too much, heres what we have in store for you in the June issue!

Go to page 18 (Month by Month) and find out how to use typography to dress up your home. Theres a wealth of ideas that will surprise you on how fun and funky word play can be! As for furniture, go window shopping on page 34 and feast your eyes on the latest Milan Fair 2014 roll-outs. The good news is: they are available in Singapore! Theres also a storage guide (page 20, Bare Basics) and a DIY feature (page 42, Practical) on how to keep your jewellery in order.

Well, furnishing your home isnt always the easiest thing in the world, when you have a world of selections. But with our June 2014 issue, Im sure youll be on the right track!

    Have a fruitful June!

As a cool tone, blue is calming and yet can command, a regal presence. This is especially prominent in this boho chic home. The blue painted walls stand strong as a gorgeous feature statement, and the visual contrast is made apparent with white frame mouldings. Adding to that is the tasteful selection of furnishings with a classic style.

hidden revolution European market leader in sanitary technology, Geberit Group, is celebrating 50 years of its cutting-edge concealed cisterns. 1964 saw the birth of this innovation, which sparked the change from sanitary units to convenience bathrooms. The concept is to install the cistern behind the wall rather than in front of it. Fast forward to 2014 and the brand is still on top of its game. In honour of their anniversary year, Geberit introduces a new concealed model, the AquaClean Sela, with three different construction heights. Not only are they able to accommodate both front and top actuation, the plates are significantly smaller to make way for creative freedom.Visit www.geberit.com.sg for more information

    16 JUN

The selections Specialising in quality pieces of reasonable prices, level two of the store showcases the LaCreation collection while level three hosts its signature Lush collection. Whats exciting is their new NEST collection, which comprises Scandinavian designs, is debuting on level three this June. Exclusive only to Lush, expect plenty of space-saving, modular yet dynamic pieces for work, rest and play.

Lush Flagship store Spanning 12,000 square feet of retail space, the two-storey showroom is brimming with furniture for the entire home. Lush was opened in 2006, by CEO Steve Lim from Luxur Home. While furnishing his own apartment, he found that there was a lack of affordably priced pieces; and those that were, were not accessible here. Therefore, he saw the demand and opened Lush, and the rest, we say, is history.

Since then, it has stocked up some pretty interesting brands; namely Matzform, Moreless and Ziin. The difference between this boutique and the Lush flagship store is each hosts different brands. concrete ideasCement screed flooring is a mainstay of the industrial-style home.

For that added punch, check out other creative applications

If you love industrial-style interiors, chances are youll love the look of concrete surfaces. The raw grey tones add a rustic charm that fits perfectly with the design themes laidback eclectic styling. That said, concrete surfaces, known commonly as cement screed finish, are extremely versatile and can suit other interior design styles just as beautifully. Cement screed finish need not be confined to flooring. It can be applied in many other areas of the interior, and can contribute tremendously to the overall look.

Many interior design firms are seeing rising numbers in clients asking for cement screed finishes. The consensus among interior designers we have spoken to however, is that homeowners need to be aware of what cement screed finish entails. In general, cement screed finish ages gracefully. Dont be bothered by hairline cracks or changes in colouring because thats part of the beauty. Whats interesting about it is that the older it is, the nicer it looks, says Raymond Seow, Design Director of Free Space Intent.

CeilingAside from flooring, the ceiling is another popular option for cement screed finish. Unlike a plain, painted ceiling, irregular tones on the cement screed surface inject visual texture and even drama to an interior. Draw attention to beams with cement screed for depth and dimension. Pair with exposed piping and trunking for an outstanding look thats suited for spaces like the kitchen and living room.

Walls Because of its porous nature, cement screed finish is best for spaces with little moisture and activity. When used for the wall, get creative with groove lines. These create definition or bring the illusion of height and width to the space. For a polished aesthetic, add stainless steel inlays.

CountertopWhen properly finished and coloured, a concrete countertop can mimic the look of natural stone. The common misconception though is that it is a hardy material. Like natural stones such as marble, its porous and is susceptible to stains. Be sure to coat the surface with epoxy coating and sealant once a year for protection.

FurnitureYou might love the look of cement screed countertops, but take note that its porous nature might make it a hassle to maintain when used in the kitchen. Having second thoughts about concrete countertops? Introduce a display ledge in cement screed elsewhere in the home. That way, you can enjoy its raw beauty and have peace of mind. How about a custom designed coffee table? Opt for a smooth finish. Coat it with sealant, lacquer or epoxy for comfort.

Bathroom More homes are seen with bathrooms finished with concrete walls, floor and ceiling. Some interior designers caution against this, as the materials porous nature could cause water seepage issues after a few years. If you live in a high-rise building, this could affect the unit on the floor below. To curb the problem, interior designers recommend reapplying a fresh coat of epoxy at least once every two years.

Not for the accident prone A mishap like dropping an object on the surface might cause cracks. Note that cement screed surfaces tend to crack, peel or chip over time. Patching the imperfections is likely to disrupt the patterns and tones of the surface.

Colour chameleonIts colour will change over time due to exposure to heat, sun or moisture. Expect this as part of its aging process.

Glossy laminates: Smooth-textured cement screed with even tonality complements glossy laminates. Gives an elegant vibe.

The right sizeThe size of a ceiling fan is represented by its blade span. This is measured according to the length of the fan blades from one end to the other. Blade spans typically range from 30 to 54 inches. To determine which size you need, measure the room where the ceiling fan will be installed so that you will get a fan that is an appropriate size for the room.

Mounting systemFor safety and optimum comfort, ceiling fans should be installed in the middle of the room, at least seven feet above the floor and 18 inches from the walls or doors. These are the different types of mount used for ceiling fans:

Standard mounts come with a three- to five-inch-long down rod, which is the metal rod that extends the fan down from the ceiling bracket.

Extended mounts, as its name suggests, are used to hang the ceiling fan at a desired height from the floor for high ceilings.

Flush mounts hold the fan directly against the ceiling, which is ideal for rooms that have low ceilings.

Sloped mounts are used for angled or vaulted ceilings.

Firstly, they need to know the height of their ceiling and whether it is a concrete or false ceiling. A false ceiling will require a different type of installation method and if it is not done properly, it might result in noise or shaking. It is advisable to fix the fan at least six inches away from the nearest down lights, if any, in order to avoid casting shadows.

Typically, for the living room of HDB flats or condominiums, we will usually recommend a fan size of 48 to 54 inches. For bedrooms and dining areas, we will usually recommend 46 to 48 inches.

They can use Magiclean static dusters to clean the fan blades and body. Once in a while, they can also use a damp cloth to wipe the blades and follow through with a dry cloth. Low maintenance is required for ceiling fans. They do not require special cleaning methods or lotion.

30 38Fans of this size range are most often used in very small rooms such as bathrooms, walk-in closets, kitchens and hallways.

39 48Guest bedrooms, childrens rooms, and home offices usually use fans of this size range.

49 54These blade spans are the most popular size and commonly used in most spaces like living rooms and master bedrooms.

55 and moreThese fans are used for large rooms, particularly if the ceiling is high as well. However, the larger the ceiling fan, the more the air gets spread out, reducing the amount of breeze you get. You could consider installing two smaller fans instead.

Jerald Tew from Crestar Enterprise Pte Ltd shares some tips on choosing and maintaining a ceiling fan.

  • 34 JUN

    focus

Lubricate If youve just purchased your ceiling fan, run it for 24 hours to ensure the lubricant

applied during the manufacturing is evenly distributed.

Polish With wooden blades, apply a light coat of furniture polish to it for additional protection and

to enhance its natural beauty. If there are small scratches, try rubbing a light application of shoe polish.

Built-in light A two-in-one fan and light model will help to save money and ceiling space but it will

be best to get one that uses compact fluorescent lamps or energy-saving LEDs. This will render less bulb changes.

Distance For safety reasons, make sure there is a minimum ceiling height of 2.2-metre

to 2.8-metre distance from where your fan hangs. Also, ensure that the fan blades are at least 2.4 metres above the ground for optimum air circulation.

Dirty blades One of the most common reasons that a fan wobbles or shakes is dirty

blades. Remember to clean it once you spot dirt and dust accumulating on the blades.

Cleaning Clean the fan blades with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. If there are

stubborn stains or dirt, mild grease cleaner should do the trick. Do turn off the main switch before cleaning to avoid getting electrocuted.

Drying After cleaning, always dry the blades with a towel and allow it to air dry before

    operating the fan.

Tighten blots If your fan wobbles, check the bolts that hold the fan blades into the

centre fan motor. These blades can become loose once in a while so tighten it to stop the wobbling.

Choose the right size Smaller rooms should use a 36-inch to 42-inch in diameter

ceiling fan. A 52-inch unit will fare well in a larger room.

Get a quality brand Dont stinge on getting a reputed brand fan. Paying more will

ensure quality and a more silent fan too!

Noting that the homeowners have discerning taste, he went with a classy contemporary grey palette to anchor the primary design features. Simple yet striking, the visual contrast of the two hues brings a stylised tone to the table.

It is always a challenge if youre a bachelor wanting to find a space to call your own. There are things to consider such as price, location and the close proximity to modern day conveniences. For a visually larger space, keep to one flooring style for the entire house. Itll be less busy and not overwhelm the eye.

To truly maximise space, separate two areas of a room with a storage divider.

But generally, you get peace and solitude even on weekends.

The brief to Kenis was Vintage Contemporary a mesh of steampunk, modern and Baroque elements. Certainly, this concept had never been done by Yellow Boots but being a passionate and dedicated interior designer, delivering the goods to the client was paramount. Kenis researched the elements that make up each concept while understanding the type of furniture pieces, colour palette and material finishes the homeowner desired.

Work began in March and part of the transformation was to knock down walls to create a two-bedroom apartment that is very spacious and light-filled. Two months

The new living area now leans towards a masculine feel cow rug, L-shaped sofa with a linear form, black and white cushions and a dark grey feature wall where a picture of New York City (purchased in New York) is framed up and hung. There are also furniture icons in this space that add to the character of the room such as the Eames DAW chair and walnut stool, designed in 1950 and 1960, respectively. The couples love for authentic, timeless design is reflected in these two choice purchases.

The couples fondest spot in their newly done-up space is surprisingly not the living room or bedroom, but the open concept kitchen and island counter that serves as a dining area. They love the counter idea because it is not only a counter for food preparation but also a dining table for them to serve food.

The open concept also promotes better interaction between living and kitchen area especially when one is preparing food.

There were the usual challenges though, such as realising there were exposed beams after hacking down the kitchen wall. So, by adding a cove lighting feature to the beam, the lighting effect actually turned out great! The real test in a designers work is when the couple finally settle down in their pad and go about doing their day-to-day routines.

Were happy with the results from Karen Tan and our home is now a cosy and functional space. Plus, we added our input into the design, and friends can really understand our character as a couple, enthuses the wife. Many interior designers would say that getting simplicity right isnt easy. Whats more, adding design details such that it wont interfere from this design principle can be very challenging. With its light-filled interior, clean lines and zones, this four-room HDB unit in Punggol exemplifies how a clean yet lively interior can be crafted.

They asked for serenity, a place to wind down when you go home after a tired day, says Vincent Goi, the director of Hue D, of the owners brief. Vincent brought in his team, consisting of Catherine Low and Vernie Kon, who are the design director and designer respectively, to work on the project.

KEYiDeaSIs the existing layout perfect for you? One way to demarcate space clearly is to create a strong border with a bold frame that runs overhead and from one wall to the opposite wall.

For a bright interior with subtle depth and dimension, play with shades of white and cream for your walls and ceiling.

Even for a small space like the bedroom, dont be afraid to create zones by employing outstanding colours. Strengthen the concept by painting the ceiling in the zone colours too.

Instead of a standout TV feature wall, go for one that blends in with the walls to achieve a streamlined interior.

The design language here is modern minimalist with strong lines and colours to demarcate spaces within spaces, adds Vincent.

Having furniture in a colour that blends with the wall is a smart strategy to keep the space looking uncluttered.

Says Vincent: Note that cabinetry in the bedrooms is designed in an elegant manner that emphasises the texture of the fabric-grained laminate patterned with neat interval lines. These details are noticeable when you observe. This creates details that are subtle rather than shouting out loud.

things have to look the way they are? says Vincent. So instead of a suspended TV console, for example, they created a custom piece with square-ish legs so that it looks like a piece of loose furniture. This piece ties in with the look of the other built-in cabinets.
