    Executive SummaryDia de los Dinosauriosis a platformer set in a world that takes its design cues from both

    dinosaurs and the Mexican holiday Die de los Muertos. Although the tone is uplifting

    (think of a Disney or Pixar movie), the underlying story theme is accepting that bad

    things can and will happen to you and that you should make the most of what you

    have (which ties into the overall day of the dead theme...it is a celebration rather than

    a mourning). The backstory is that one of the friends of the main characters has passed

    away and they want to honor his memory by creating the best festival display that they

    can.

    Players can switch between the five main characters (each with unique properties)

    during the game (some objectives will require them to be playing as a specific

    character). The main objective of the game is to collect (and confect) as much candy

    as possible. This is done by completing various tasks for the non-player characters found

    throughout the game. The games locations will evolve depending on when players visit

    them (for example: a jungle area the player traveled to early on in the game will have

    been radically altered if they come back later on).

    StoryThe story tells the fictional origins of the day of the dead. A group of dinosaur friends are

    mourning the loss of their dead friend and decide to journey into the land of the dead

    to take them back to the land of the living. Over the course of the story, they cope withthe loss of their friend and accept his loss. They are rewarded with the chance to spend

    one day of the year with their friend every year.

    Outline1) Introduction (Linear)

    a) Opening Cut scene: Introduces the main plotrescuing the dead friend.

    b) Tutorial Level: The dinosaurs follow the owl to the shrine/altar area. The player

    learns the basic controls of every dinosaur on their journey to the shrine.

    Plot Points

    The dinosaurs mourn the loss of their friend. The dinosaurs decide to rescue their friend from the land of the dead.

    The dinosaurs journey to collect candies in order to access the land of the dead.

    The dinosaurs descend into the land of the dead.

    The dinosaurs fight Santa Muerte.

    The dinosaurs cope with the revelation that their friend should stay dead.

    The dinosaurs spend one day with their friend before he returns to the land of the

    dead.

    Environments

    Altar

    The altar area serves as the games main hub. This is where the player can visit the

    confectionary and try their hand at making candies. The altar is based off of altars to

    the dead. The items that the player collects throughout the levels are used to decorate

    this area of the game.

    Jungle

    The jungle area is adorned with color flowers and paper decorations.

    Chocolate Lava Caves

    The Chocolate Lava Caves are a series of volcanic caves and crevices that are falling

    apart. It has players running from fried ice-cream avalanches, dodging molten tamales,and leaping over freshly cooked candied apples.

    Sugar Sea

    The ocean is made of sugar-water instead of salt-water. One of the collectibles in this

    level is a candy pineapple.

    Cinnamon Desert

    The Cinnamon Desert is a large expanse of cinnamon filled dunes that are peppered

    with dried up sugar ruins (complete with reanimated sugar skull creatures.

    Land of the DeadAfter collecting the prerequisite candies and completing all other areas, the player

    opens the portal to the Land of the Dead.

    ScriptOpening Cut Scene

    INT. FUNERAL DAY (RAINING)

    The camera slowly swoops down from the sky, looking down on a

    group of dinosaurs standing around a mound of dirt.

    MIGUEL

    (Trying to sound Ominous)

    Death. The insurmountable force that dictates the actions of all

    things. Try as we might to conquer it, there is nothing that can

    be done to dissuade the lady from taking us all.

    Several zoomed in shots of random things (a plant, a puddle, and

    so on).

    MIGUEL

    See that there?

    Close up of the marker. We can see that something is written on

    it. The music swells. A storm starts to build up.

    (Switches to an upbeat tone)

    Thats my grave!

    Alejandro starts to cry

    MIGUEL

    (Matter of fact voice)

    Yeah, Im deadit happens. Its actually not that bad. To be

    honest, I think its worse for everybody else.

    A series of angled shots shows the characters standing around

    the grave are downtrodden.

    MIGUEL

    (Tinge of sadness to his voice)

    Those guys are my best friends.

    Camera zooms out to show the group standing together.

    MIGUEL

    (Longing)

    Tomas/Sofia/Alejandro/Isabella/Pablo

    After Miguel mentions, the camera quickly cuts to show them in

    the center of the frame (this process repeats for everyone).

    The camera rotates around the group. As he speaks the rain

    starts to stop and things get brighter.

    MIGUEL

    It kills me to see them like thiswell, you know what I mean.

    II justI wish I could tell them that everything will be okay.

    Rain has stopped. The group starts to walk away from the grave.

    The camera zooms out to show the area in front of them. An owl

    swoops down in-front of the camera

    MIGUEL (CONTD)

    Things will get better. I promise.

    The camera pans up to sky as the logo appears in the center of

    the screen.

    EXT. FUNDERAL DAY

    Camera swings down behind one of the playable characters and

    transitions into gameplay.

    Ending Cut Scene

    INT SHRINE NIGHT

    Santa Muerte stumbles back and starts dissolving. She screams to

    the sky as she fades into darkness. The camera pans to show

    Isabella staring at where Santa Muerte stood. The others walk up

    and form a group around them.

    Whoever the player used to land the final hit

    (Panting)

    ItsIts donewe did it.

    Camera zooms up to each characters face to show them smiling or

    laughing (their facial expression changes depending on the

    character).

    MIGUEL

    You sure did.

    They look surprised and start to turn. The camera zooms out

    giving the audience a view into the reflective surface behind

    them. Someone is standing there, looking proud. The camera turns

    around to view Miguel from the groups perspective.

    They continue to stare at him, flabbergasted.

    MIGUEL

    (Upbeat)

    Hey

    They start to stutter and try to comprehend what exactly is

    happening. Finally Isabella speaks up

    (Apprehensive)

    How-why are you here?

    MIGUEL

    (Smirking)

    Well, we are standing in the Land of the Deadkind of obvious

    don't you think?

    ALEJANDRO

    (Irritated)

    She means how exactly are you talking to us?

    MIGUEL

    Good to see you too Alejandro. Anyways, Ive been planning this

    little meet up for a while now. Took a lot of effort, let me

    tell you. Do you have any idea how hard is help someone overcome

    a fear. Clearing all of those spaces, spreading all those germs,

    and dont even get me started on you Sofia. Setting up all of

    those dark areas took forever.

    MIGUEL

    I used to be terrified of the dark!

    MIGUEL

    Used to be being the key phrase there. Yourewelcome.

    PABLO

    (Confused)

    So, you did all of this to help us get over our fears?

    MIGUEL

    Not exactly. Actually, that was more of a bonus. Think of it

    like a parting gift. What are friends for, right? Although it

    was nice watching all of you conquer your fears and-

    Watching?

    MIGUEL

    YepIve been watching you the whole time. Anyways I-

    TOMAS

    (Very Angry)

    Youve been watching us?! Why didnt you say anything?! Do you

    have any idea how much we missed you? Didnt you care enough to

    even say anything? To let us know you were okay?

    Pablo moves to comfort Tomas as the others look towards Miguel.

    Miguel looks down, almost like he is ashamed.

    MIGUEL

    (Apologetic)

    Look, T. I know your upset, but I had to follow her rules. Being

    able to help you, that wasnt my call.

    SANTA MUERTE

    It was mine.

    The camera turns around as the characters do. Santa Muerte is

    standing there, a smile on her face. The characters take

    fighting stances, but she puts her hand up.

    SANTA MUERTE

    Allow me to explain. As the spirit of death, it is my

    responsibility to act as a guardian to all those who pass on

    from the realm of the living. However, your friend here

    surprised me. He wasnt saddened by his own death, but by the

    impact it had on those he left behind. Upon seeing this, I

    agreed to lead you to the land of the dead in order to help you

    cope with his passing.

    As she explains, shots from the game (without the HUD) are

    showed on the screen. Interspersed with these shots are cuts of

    the characters faces.

    SANTA MUERTE

    (Saddened)

    But now, it is time for you to leave.

    Pablo flies up and grabs Miguel.

    PABLO

    Leave, you mean he cant come with us? No! We came all this way,

    he has t-

    MIGUEL

    (Comforting)

    Its okay guys. Ive come to terms with it. I just want you all

    to know what it is okay to move on.

    Everyone looks sad.

    SANTA MUERTE

    Because of the lengths you went to in order to reunite with your

    loved one, I decree that for one day each year, the dead will be

    able to return to the living and spend time in the company of

    those they cared about. I shall call this Dia de los Muertos!

    Montage of the characters all talking and laughing. Miguel is

    narrating as this occurs.

    MIGUEL

    (Happy)

    And so it went. Every year people would gather around and spend

    time speaking with the spirits of those who came back.

    Eventually, the actual meeting faded into myth, but the

    sentiment still remained: that even though we cannot control

    death, we can control our reactions to it. Those we love may be

    gone, but their memories will last forever. Everything will be

    okay, I promise.

    The camera pans up to sky as the logo appears in the center of

    the screen.

    EXT. FADE TO BLACK

    Non-Interactive Sequences

    Opening Cut scene

    The opening cut scene establishes the backstory and the dinosaurs motivation fortravelling to the land of the dead to rescue their deceased friend. It also introduces the

    owl, the support character.

    Ending Cut scene

    The dinosaurs spend a day with their deceased friend.

    Player Characters

    IsabellaStegosaurus whose biggest character flaw is her overconfidence (she serves as the

    balanced character and is average in all gameplay areas).

    Abilities

    Attack

    When Isabella attacks, she swings her tail at the enemy.

    Movement

    Isabella can stick her back spines into moving platforms to move across pits on the

    bottom of the moving platform.

    Special PowersIsabella is the tank of the groupshe can take more hits than the other dinosaurs

    before being defeated.

    Progression

    Isabella gets better at everythingshe becomes the best character, but this doesnt

    unlock until the end of the game during the final battle.

    TomsAgoraphobic tyrannosaurus that uses his innate size and strength to break through

    obstacles, stomp on enemies, and rampage through the level.

    Abilities

    Attack

    Toms attacks with his large bite. He can also destroy enemies by jumping on them.

    Movement

    Toms is tall and cant fit in some of the areas that his smaller friends can fit into.

    Special Powers

    Toms has higher strength than the rest of the dinosaurs and does double damage

    when attacking.

    Progression

    When Toms conquers his fear at the completion of his character arc, he gets a

    movement speed bonus. This is unlocked in the Cinnamon Desert.

    SophiaA cross between a puffer fish and a megalodon like creature who can contort her

    body to swim through passages (also focuses on speed and evasion).

    Abilities

    Attack

    Sophia has 2 attacks depending on if shes on ground or on land.

    Land Attack (Projectile):Sophia shoots water at the enemies.

    Water Attack (Melee):Sophia charges into enemies.

    Movement

    Sofia is amphibious and can move on both land and water. Sophia moves quickly

    under water but slower than the other dinosaurs on land.

    Special PowersSophia can contort her body to swim through underwater passages.

    Progression

    When Sophia conquers her fear of sharp objects, she unlocks the ability to launch spikes

    from her body in all directions. This is unlocked in the Sugar Sea.

    AlejandroTriceratops who attacks enemies and dashes around the levels (he can enter a

    charging run to burst through enemies).

    Abilities

    Attack

    Alejandro attacks by charging through enemies.

    Movement

    Alejandro can charge on land, moving faster than the other dinosaurs.

    Special Powers

    Alejandro begins with no special powers, but obtains the ability to charge through walls

    and breakable objects.

    Progression

    Alejandro unlocks the ability to charge through walls and breakable objects when he

    conquers his fear of breaking things. This is unlocked in the Chocolate Lava Caves.

    PabloHypochondriac pterodactyl that can use his wings to generate special wind based

    attacks (he also can access several level areas the others cannot).

    Abilities

    Attack

    Pablos attack is a projectile attack. He fires gusts of wind by flapping his wings. The

    gusts knock enemies backwards.

    Movement

    Pablo is a pterodactyl, but he cannot fly.

    Special Powers

    Instead of flying, Pablosmain movement gimmick is the ability to glide. The ability to

    glide allows Pablo to cross larger pits than the rest of the dinosaurs to reach areas that

    they cant.

    Progression

    Pablo unlocks a double jump/flap that allows him to jump higher and glide for longer

    distances. This is unlocked in the jungle.

    Non-Player Characters

    Supporting Characters

    OwlThe owl is the avatar of Santa Muerte and acts as a mentor and guide for the player on

    their journey. This is not revealed to the player until the end.

    Vendors

    Shrines

    The player will encounter shrines in different areas of the game. They can leave an

    offering of candies at the shrine in order to receive a boon.

    Enemies

    Sugar Skeletons

    Sugar skeletons are the most common enemy of the game and can be found in all

    areas.

    Ice-cream Zombies

    The ice-cream zombies are in the chocolate lava caves. They take extra damage by

    shooting them with fudge or by knocking them into the fudge with Pablos projectile

    attack.

    Sweet-bread Slimes

    The sweet-bread slimes are jelly-fish-like enemies in the sugar sea.

    Gummy Bears

    The gummy bears are located in the jungle.

    Swedish Fish

    The Swedish fish are aquatic enemies that live in the sugar sea.

    Red Hot Tamales

    Red hot tamales are enemies in the cinnamon desert.

    Bosses

    Candy Ent

    The candy Ent is the boss of the Jungle area. Its a living tree that attacks the player by

    throwing caramel apples and chocolate bananas.

    StompThe candy Ent slams a single hand down onto the player in hopes of

    crushing them, sends out a large shockwave the player has to glide over.

    SwipeThe Candy Ent swipes his hands across the ground, happening to smack

    the player. Requires a double jump to dodge.

    Lickerish SnapThe Ent slams several vines into the ground which the player

    must dodge between.

    Candy CarnageThe Ent throws three barrages of candy fruit at the player,

    ripping them from his head. Then the Ent roots himself in the ground as he

    attempts to re grow his fruit. During this time, the player will need to double jump

    into the top of the Ents branches to reach its weak point.

    Fudge Titan

    The fudge titan is a titan made entirely of fudge that lives inside the chocolate lava

    caves.

    Fudge LASER: Fudge Titan throws a fudge laser at the player. Using Alejandro, theplayer must charge around the level to go fast enough to avoid the laser.

    Fudge Pool: The fudge Titan melts down covering the entire area in sticky fudge.

    Various portions of the fudge begin to bubble, and will eventually explode

    upward causing damage. The only way to avoid these geysers is to charge

    through the fudge as it slows the player a great deal.

    Fudge Break: The fudge titan splits apart into tiny replicas of himself. It is here that

    the player will need to defeat the titan. These small fudgling can be destroyed

    by charging through them.

    Sugar Cube

    The sugar cube is a giant enemy in the sugar sea. It dissolves and reforms at different

    locations during the fight.

    Sugar Rush: The sugar cube circles around the player and dissolves, rushing at

    them with a formless mass of sharp sugar crystal. The player may dodge it by

    jetting out of the way.

    Sugar Cush: The sugar cube breaks apart and quickly reforms overhead as

    several large weights. (Think Whomps from Mario).

    Sugar Storm: The sugar cube dissolves again and begins swirling around the

    character. This attack is un-dodgeable. However just before the sugar comes

    close to the character Sophia can use her ability to fire spike to damage the

    sugar cube.

    Giant Gummy Worms

    The giant gummy worms live under the cinnamon dunes.

    The massive Worm tunnels underground and attempts to bore upward and swallow the

    character.

    The large worm half buried and half uncovered, charges the player attempting to

    devour them whole.

    Jumping Bore: The worm launches itself into the air l ike a breaking whale

    attempting to come down on the player. This is the only way to kill the giant

    worm. The player must cause the worm to jump and attack themselves whilethey are standing on a large rock.

    Santa Muerte

    Santa Muerte, or Saint Death, is the ruler of the underworld and serves as the primary

    antagonist for the player characters. However, Santa Muerte is not evil or even really a

    villainSanta Muerte is a force of nature (death).

    Stage one (Tomas):

    Stygian Fire: Santa Muerte fires several large fiery orbs at the player in a straight

    line.

    Spectral Beam: Santa Muerte fires a large sweeping beam which the player must

    outrun.

    Coffin Drop: Santa Muerte summons several large stones above the player which

    the player must keep moving in order to avoid. The player can run toward Santa

    Muerte in order to get the rocks to crush Santa Muerte.

    Stage two (Sophia):

    In response to Tomas assault, Santa Muerte floods the entire area, resulting in the

    player needing to switch to Sophia.

    Rapid Rib Fire: Santa Muerte breaks her skeletal system apart and begins to firevarious bones at the player. As she does so, she reconstructs herself on the other

    side of the player.

    Styx Spin: Santa Muerte conjures several whirlpools in the water and fires them at

    Sophia. The whirlpools remain but only three of them can be active at once.

    Bludgeoning Bone Band: Santa Muerte breaks herself apart again and turns into

    many different smaller bones. These bones circle around the player until finally

    closing in for an attack. The player will need to use Sophias puffing ability to

    interrupt Santa Muerte before she gets the attack in.

    Stage three (Alejandro):

    Bone Bulwark: Santa Muerte throws up a large wall of bones all around her. The

    solid barrier cannot be dodged; it must be smashed through by Alejandro

    charge ability.

    Minion Make: Santa Muerte creates several sugar skeleton spawns to attack the

    player.

    Bone Bomb: Santa Muerte conjures up a massive ball of bones and stone and

    chunks it in a wide arc toward the player. The player must charge into the bomb

    to get it to fire back and Santa Muerte so they can then damage them.

    Stage four: (Pablo):

    Deaths Touch: Santa Muerte conjures up a massive skeletal hand and attemptsto swat the player. The player will need to double jump to avoid it.

    Tibia Terror: Santa Muerte creates a pair of massive legs and feet to stomp the

    ground causing large shockwaves to spread across the arena.

    Pillar of Death: Santa Muerte slams the ground causing several large pillars to

    erupt upward toward the ceiling. The player must jump to and scales multiple

    pillars of different heights to reach Santa Muerte who is charging a second

    attack which will cause the entire area to slam into the ceiling hurting the player.

    Stage Five (Isabella):

    At this point in the boss fight, the player must play as Isabella. All the other playercharacters are un-playable. Santa Muerte recycles powers from the past forms in this

    fight.

    Gameplay Mechanics

    Pillars

    HealthEach time the player takes a hit, they lose hit-points. The penalty for dying is that the

    player is reset to their last checkpoint.

    Character Swapping

    The player can switch between the main characters at special kiosks that are scattered

    about the levels.

    Collectables

    There are 2 types of collectables:

    Candy Skull: Candy skulls are used to unlock areas of the game. There are afinite number of skulls in each level.

    Wrapped Candies: Wrapped candies are used as currency at vendors. Wrapped

    candies are dropped by defeated enemies.

    Movement

    Each character moves at different speeds on ground.

    Jumping

    Each character can jump a different height.

    SwimmingAll characters are capable of swimming, but they move at different speeds. There is no

    drowning mechanic.

    Gliding

    Currently, only one character is capable of gliding. Gliding slows his descent after

    jumping, allowing him to jump larger gaps.

    Falling

    If the player falls into a pit, they player is reset to the last safe area they stood on

    AttackingEach playable character has a unique attack.

    Evading

    Special Abilities

    Each playable character has 2 unique special abilities.

    Fears

    Each playable character has a unique fear. By completing each characters story arc,

    the character conquers their fear and gains a movement bonus.

    Contextual Actions

    Isabellas Movement Skill: When Isabella is underneath or near a platform shecan attach her spines to, a context clue will appear to let the player know that

    they can jump into the bottom of the object.

    RepetitionThe sugar skeletons are recycled in every level of the game.

    There are a few repeated game mechanics:

    Dying Upgrading abilities

    All Levels can be revisited and enemies will be re-spawned, but the modular

    encounters will be upgraded based on how many characters have been unlocked.

    Save/Load Scheme

    Save Point

    Save points allow the player to save their progress and continue from their progress

    later.

    Check Point

    A check-point is a mid-level kiosk that takes a snap-shot of the players progress through

    the level. Each time the player dies, they pay their candy offering to the Owl to restart

    from their last checkpoint. If they cant afford the toll, then they mustrestart from their

    last save point.

    Upgrading Check Points

    A check-point can be upgraded to a save point by spending candies.

    PacingEach level introduces a new playable character, unlocks a player character upgrade,and introduces a new enemy type. As the player unlocks new characters and abilities,

    the modular encounter sections of the levels upgrade to become more challenging.
