SPSS Exercise 1 Getting Started Due: Objective: There are three objectives to the assignment. 1. Securing the SPSS software 2. Securing the data for the SPSS assignments 3. Learning about the SPSS interface. Software: The software is available at no cost to all students. Go to IT Helpdesk in Clark Hall (rm. 102). If you do not have a computer it is possible to borrow them from the King Library. Data: 1. The data are available at (http://www.sjsu.edu/people/carlos.e.garcia/courses/soc104/) 2. Click on the “SPSS Data” link. This will open a new page with unintelligible text. 3. Save the file to your desktop. a. For those using Firefox go under “File” and select “Save Target As” and save the file as “Web Page HTML Only.” b. Chrome and Explorer are similar to Firefox. c. With Safari try Page Source and in the follow up window select use both. 4. Once the file is saved open SPSS and find the file saved in step 3. 5. At this point save the file with a new name that incorporates your last name (for example I might call mine “Garcia SPSS WNT 2018”). SPSS Interface: 1. Open the SPSS data set . See Figure 1.1. 2. At the bottom middle of the screen there are two view options “Data View” (this view displays the responses given by survey participants’ using the numeric code assigned to responses) and “Variable View” (this view displays the variables in the data set and the their characteristics. Always work from the Variable View. 3. The first column in variable view is “Name.” Name (also known as variable name) displays a short-hand tag assigned to a specific variable. It usually contains enough information to describe the variable it represents (e.g. “Marital” refers to respondents marital status.) Note that Name has to have alpha numeric characters, never contains spaces between characters, and are rarely longer that 8 characters. 4. The second column in variable view is “Type.” This refers to whether a variable uses numeric or alphabetic code. In this class we will always use variables of the type “Numeric.”
