You know your daughter. You recognize her subtleties. Her talents.

At St. Paul’s School for Girls…

Page 2: SPSG Admission Viewbook 2012-2013

…we recognize her too.

Since 1959, we’ve been encouraging Baltimore girls

grades 5 – 12 to recognize themselves as they mature

into more confident, more accomplished, more poised

young women prepared for college and life beyond.

So what does your resilient, curious, determined

daughter need from her school?

She needs learning that helps her see in herself what

you’ve recognized in her for years.

Learning that feels right.

At St. Paul’s School for Girls, her learning can feel…

Page 3: SPSG Admission Viewbook 2012-2013

Your daughter’s mind already teems with questions: why a water lily

blooms only at night, how different cultures communicate, the shape

of a galaxy. Through our college-preparatory curriculum—carefully

designed to fit her learning style as a girl and taught by our dedicated

faculty members—she gradually but surely grows into a critical thinker,

a reasoner, a researcher.

Here, your daughter keeps questioning her world in fresh ways, on her own

terms, and, in turn, reaches new and surprising insights.

as she progresses from thinker to theorist

at st. paul’s school for girls, the moment occurs any

number of ways: her sixth grade personal essay; her eighth grade

scientific paper; her tenth grade term paper; her original play

performed by her peers.

Each girl learns differently, so we tailor our approach to each girl.

But our purpose remains the same: For girls to learn through writing

and grow into confident, eloquent communicators who begin to

interpret not only the world in front of them, but their own inner lives.

st. paul’s school for girls students travel the world

to our sister schools in Argentina, Australia, France, Japan, and China

as well as to Costa Rica and Belize for service learning trips. To prepare,

our girls learn the language, the culture, and the customs from afar.

Then they immerse themselves not as tourists, but as explorers —

documenters and interpreters of new places, people, and ideas — and

active participants in expanding their own horizons.

we saw it — not necessarily the singular moment — but her transformation from unsure ballerina to principal dancer, from chorus member to soloist. For each girl, it’s different — the path toward maturity and self-realization, to newfound refinement and poise . Your daughter graduates a more polished version of the girl you dropped off on her first day.

At St. Paul’s School for Girls, she constructs a self-confidence she takes with her for the rest of her life.

My daughter would not be the

person she is today had she not

gone here; I watched her transform

into this confident young woman.

She just blossomed and it’s because

of her experience at St. Paul’s School

for Girls. —current parent

there’s a  difference between knowing how to bend a corner kick

and knowing how to captain a team. All girls at St. Paul’s School for

Girls arrive with natural talents and abilities — which we recognize

and cultivate.

But our athletes also apply the thinking they learn in our classrooms

and the camaraderie they feel in our hallways to their on-field

performance. Through the years, they learn how to train, how to

devise a game plan, how to execute when it matters.

Your daughter has alwaYs been willing to help others. At St. Paul’s

School for Girls, we see that too, which is why we offer her the chance

to give back in a variety of ways — not only in shelters, nursing homes,

or in the community garden — but nationally and internationally on

service learning trips.

We encourage her to cultivate her passion to help others, first in her

community, and, ultimately, throughout the world.

as she matures from volunteer to advocate

because we cherish our Episcopal tradition, we believe that

reflection and spiritual growth are essential to your daughter’s journey

of self-discovery. We give her time to listen, to feel, to interpret,

to engage in conversation that inspires and guides. We encourage her

to search inward for deeper understanding of herself and the world

around her.

When she’s encouraged to mine her own depths, the world opens

to her with near-endless possibilities and she gains the confidence

and consciousness to shape her future.

by thinking outside the curriculum

From grades 5 to 12, your daughter seizes

opportunities for challenge and achievement based

on her academic abilities. In upper school, she

can participate in the Scholars Program, which

partners with Johns Hopkins University and other

organizations, allowing her to partake in unique

independent study.

by gaining confidence in the spotlight

Through our rich array of arts — dance, theater,

music, and visual arts — she expresses and explores

the human condition and pursues what it means

to be herself while connecting with those around

her. Our middle school choral groups routinely

return to campus having won first place at various

competitions. Our upper school singing ensemble—

the Saints—travels abroad every other year

to give concerts.

by honing her leadership skills

We believe that every girl has the potential to

blossom into a leader. So your daughter can experi-

ment with different leadership opportunities,

beginning in middle school. She can lead a club, run

for elected office, become a peer educator, or serve

on various boards and committees. More than 70%

of our students hold leadership positions on campus.

by playing on a team

Our middle school athletics program offers 9 sports

for skill development and competitive play; in upper

grades, she can join one of our 13 varsity sports and

mature into a valued contributor or leader. Over

the last 10 years, 18 percent of St. Paul’s School

for Girls’ graduates participated in Division i, ii,

or iii athletics — far exceeding the national average

of 5 percent participation.

by contributing to her community

Our 60-hour community service requirement

encourages your daughter to get involved

and to give back. Our students collect food

for emergency food pantries, including produce

from the community garden, and raise money

for charities like the Race for the Cure — over

$16,000 in the last year.

by expanding her horizons

Our students travel the world. And because

St. Paul’s School for Girls was one of the first

schools to establish a sister school in China,

opening its doors in 2011 in the city of Hangzhou,

we understand the value of developing global

perspective well before college. Our Online School

for Girls also gives our girls the opportunity to take

courses with other students all across the globe.

At St. Paul’s School for Girls, she comes to recognize herself…

by beginning with fellowship

While we welcome students from all faiths,

we cherish our Episcopal tradition, which means

our students start each day coming together

for a morning meeting, still affectionately called

Prayers. During her senior year, your daughter

has a special time during Prayers to give a much-

anticipated Senior Speech about any topic she

chooses — funny, sad, uplifting, or controversial.

by interacting with St. Paul’s School

Our students, along with the boys of St. Paul’s School,

share the Ward Center for the Arts, putting on joint

productions and concerts throughout the year like

the eagerly awaited upper school fall musical and

the middle school play. So your daughter has the

opportunity to participate in co-ed extracurriculars,

as well as socialize, take co-ed classes, and even

eat lunch in the shared dining hall.

by preparing for her future

We carefully guide your daughter in finding the

distinctive colleges and universities that best suit

her individual interests and talents, and encourage

her to take ownership of this future-defining

decision. In the last two years, graduating seniors

at St. Paul’s School for Girls earned more than

$8 million in scholarships and honors from colleges

and universities across the nation.
