Sprinkler fire fighting plants
Sprinkler fire fighting plants are automatic fire extinguishing plants, which are used for preventive fire protection in special buildings, such as high-rise buildings, office buildings, stores, industrial plants, places of public assembly and underground parking garages.
The sprinkler head was invented in 1874 by the US American Henry S. Parmalee, a manufacturer of pianos. Originally, the water outlet nozzles were sealed with a metal plate which was held in place by a fixture bonded with solder. The solder melts at the correspond-ing temperature, the holding fixture releases the metal plate, this is pressed out by the water pressure and the water which flows out here is sprayed.
Several water outlet nozzles (so-called sprinkler heads) are installed in the ceiling or in the upper area of the side walls which are con-nected with a water pipe network. The water outlet nozzles, in turn, are sealed with glass ampules, which are filled with a special coloured liquid. A constant water pressure prevails inside a sprinkler system, which is controlled in the central sprinkler control. In the event of a fire, the special liquid heats up in the glass ampule and expands, which causes the ampule to explode. This causes the nozzles to open and water to escape out of the sprinkler pipe network. Hereby, the colour of the special liquid characterises the triggering temperature. This triggering temperature lies approx. 30°C above the expected room temperature, on average.
The pressure drop resulting from this is detected and leads to special valves being opened and the starting of our sprinkler pumps. Now water from tanks provided for this purpose or via a water connection dimensioned for this is pumped at high pressure into the sprinkler system. This escapes at all open water nozzles and extinguishes or minimises the fire.
The pipework and water supply are dimensioned here so that water is only available for a certain number of water nozzles, the so-called effective area. If more sprinkler heads open than are available within the effective area, the flow volume available per sprinkler head goes down and the effectiveness of the system is lowered.
Sprinkler fire fighting plants are therefore mostly for fighting the beginning phase of a fire (incipient fire) and are not able to fight a full-blown fire. A fire-resistant divider must be set up between areas without a sprinkler fire fighting plant and areas with a sprinkler fire fighting plant to prevent a full-blown fire, which developed in an unprotected area, from spreading to a building section protected with a sprinkler fire fighting plant.
So-called dry pipe systems are used in areas which are subject to frost and where the sprinkler lines can freeze. In these systems, the pipe network is filled with compressed air. The system only fills with water after a sprinkler head is triggered.
Central sprinkler controls are usually connected to fire alarm systems like a normal fire detector and trigger a fire alarm when a pressure drop is detected. This is transmitted to the police, fire department, plant security or other rescue organisations, depending on the pro-gramming.
In Germany, sprinkler fire fighting plants are usually designed in accordance with the VdS CEA 4001 (VdS accident prevention, CEA Comité Européen des Assurances) regulations. The American NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) standard – in the direc-tive's modified or further-developed form also called the FM (Factory Mutual) standard – is becoming more and more popular among inter-national builders, however, and is meanwhile also accepted by Ger-man regulatory authorities in most cases. The system is designed depending on the danger of fire in the area to be protected by defin-ing the amount of water for extinguishing the fire source between 2.25 mm/min and 30 mm/min (1 mm/min is equivalent to 1 l/m²/min), the acting time between 30 and 90 min and the distance between the sprinkler heads.

Founding The German insurance industry recognised early on that it is abso-lutely necessary to make risks manageable and insurable in active damage prevention. Already around 100 years ago, they founded the “Sprinkler regulatory agency”. During the Third Reich, the association of private fire insurers and the association of public fire insurers were disbanded. Nevertheless, the sprinkler testing agency could continue to do their work for the most part until 1944. After an interruption due to the war, it was possible to recommence work in 1947. In June 1948 the testing agency was integrated in the newly founded Ver-band der Sachversicherer e.V. (VdS) (association of property insurers).
In the following years, the technical VdS departments for fire protec-tion and break-in/theft protection were continuously being devel-oped. The fusion of the three German insurance associations: Ver-band der Sachversicherer e.V., HUK-Verband and Deutscher Transportversicherungsverband to form the Verband der Schaden-versicherer e.V. (VDS) in 1995 was only an intermediate solution before it, together with the Verband der Lebensversicherer in 1996 fused with the Gesamtverband der Deutschen Versicherungswirt-schaft e.V. (GDV), also founded in 1948. The technical departments of the former association were transferred to the VdS Schadenverhü-tung GmbH in 1997 whose sole partner is the GDV.
Today, the VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH – or VdS for short – is a modern company, trusted by all groups involved with safety – insurers, manufacturers, service providers, authorities and consumers. The expertise of VdS is documented by numerous accreditations/noti-fications.
The fire protection field The field of fire protection is an institution recognised worldwide. VdS employees are highly qualified experts who work as accident prevention professionals. VdS has been dedicated to fire protection for nearly one hundred years.
This expert knowledge flows into the development of conclusive overall fire protection and safety technology designs. The safety standard defined together with the customer, which is therefore to be strived for, brings about individual protection at the highest level. In summary, the VdS pursues the following objectives: Personal inju-ries are prevented, and property damage and financial losses, includ-ing breakdowns during failures and possibly the loss of image which results from this, are minimised.
By cooperating in national and international regulatory committees, but also by means of their own developed directives, etc. in the area of fire extinguishing, fire alarm and chimney systems, VdS has a major influence on fire protection and safety technology worldwide. VdS thus has knowledge potential at its disposal which can be versatilely used on an international basis.
VdS CEA directives for sprinkler fire fighting plants:Planning and installation These directives contain the requirements and offer recommenda-tions for planning, installation and maintenance of stationary sprin-kler fire fighting plants in buildings and industrial plants. They also define special requirements for sprinkler fire fighting plants which are relevant for personal protection measures. The demands and recom-mendations of these directives also apply for every addition, exten-sion, repair, maintenance action or other change to the sprinkler fire fighting plant. These directives include the classification of dangers, the type of water supply, the components to be used, the installation and testing of the system, as well as the maintenance and extension of existing systems. Demands are put on the building and partitions, which are required for sprinkler fire fighting plants to work properly in accordance with these directives.

Material selection by means of water analysis
Corrosion A preliminary assessment of the corrosion potential for pump unit components can be done based on a water analysis. The passivity of each material with respect to the pumped liquid requires that a suita-ble protective layer be formed on the surface in contact with the fluid. In the case of cast iron, this is the so-called “lime-rust protec-tive layer”, which can form depending on the composition of the pumped water and helps prevent further corrosion. Two criteria are necessary for this protective layer to act successfully:
- Tendency to deposit lime-containing layers according to Fig. 1.Main parameters: pH value and carbonate hardness/acid capacity KS 4,3 of the pumped water.
- Chemical stability of the deposited protective layer with respect to the present carbon acid according to Fig. 2.Main parameters: free CO2 content and carbonate hardness/acid capacity KS 4,3 (the aggressive range corresponds to the free, non-associated CO2 content).
The curve shown in the figures represents the equilibrium curve (GK) between favourable and damaging, or the incapability of layer forma-tion. It is anticipated that material corrosion will take place in the “aggressive” range (shaded in grey). In this case, we recommend our special version C or D made of corrosion-resistant materials.
For forming the protective layer, it isn't the total hardness which is decisive, but only the carbonate hardness (sum of calcium and mag-nesium bicarbonate Ca(HCO3)2 + Mg(HCO3)2).
Further substances or parameters of natural waters can have a dam-aging effect on the resistance of standard materials above the speci-fied concentrations:- SO4
2- approx. 200 mg/l- Cl- approx. 150 mg/l- Evaporation residues approx. 500 mg/l- Electr. conductivity approx. 1000 µS/cm- Traces of Cl2, H2S, NH3, NH4, sulphur, humic acids, hydrocarbons.
If these substances are combined, even low concentrations can lead to material corrosion. The warmer an aggressive pumped liquid is, the faster corrosion takes place. If critical substances are present, we ask that you consult with us at the company. Wilo offers well-engineered special designs even for aggressive fluids, such as sea water or brack-ish water.
Formation of bothersome coatings and deposits Coatings lead to impairment in pumping or to impeded heat dissipa-tion of the drive motor. Undesired deposits may be formed if there is an excessive tendency toward lime deposits according to Fig. 1 (hard water) (e.g. iron approx. 0,2 mg/l or manganese approx. 0,1 mg/l, ochre coatings or manganese dioxide).
Solid mater in the pumped liquid If solid matter is contained in the pumped liquid, material can be deposited in the pump, depending on the content and composition. Wilo submersible pumps are designed for a max. sand content of 35 mg/l. Pumps with components made of wear-resistant materials are available on request.
Gaseous particles Some applications require gaseous media to be pumped (e.g. mineral and thermal water). Gas bubbles change the pumping characteristics considerably under certain conditions and can lead to unfavourable operating conditions. In such cases, we ask that you consult the fac-tory.

General informationThe purpose of pumps is to deliver the required flow rates and pres-sures for the sprinkler fire fighting plants and nozzles. The pumps may not be used for any other purpose than for fighting fires.
The pressure on the pump pressure side must drop continuously with increasing flow rate, i.e. the pump must have a stable pump curve.
The used electromotors must be able to provide sufficient power for all pump loading conditions from a zero flow rate to the end of the pump curve. The end of the pump curve (Qz/Hz), measured at the pump pressure side, is equivalent to 0.83 times the value which is reached at an NPSH value of 9.5 m.
The pump may not be used as a fixed point for the pipelines. The pressure/riser main is to be supported directly after the pump – when installed as a pressure shroud pump directly before and after the pump – and connected stress-free. The fitting instructions are to be especially observed for compensators. Arrangements with several pumps If more than one pump should be installed for a single water supply with enhanced reliability or a double water supply, these must be driven by power sources which are independent of one another.
In all cases, the pumps must have pump curves which are tuned to each other and must be able to deliver in parallel for all flow rates. If two pumps are installed, every single one must be able to deliver the required flow rate and the required pressure. If three pumps are installed, each pump must be able to deliver at least 50 % of the pumped flow rate and the required pressure.
In the case of several water sources, the sprinkler pumps must be able to be supplied from every single water reservoir as desired if they are not separated from one another spatially. In the case of pressure shroud operation, the temperature in the pump compartment must be maintained at a minimum of +4°C.
Maximum temperature and composition of the pumped liquidThe water temperature of the water supply may not exceed 40°C. If submersible pumps are used, the water temperature may not exceed 25°C unless it can be verified that the motor is suitable for tempera-tures up to 40°C. The water must be free of fibrous or other suspended matter which could result in the pipelines becoming clogged. Salt or brackish water may not constantly be in the sprinkler lines.
Valves and accessories Shut-off valves are to be installed in the pump lines and a non-return valve in the pressure conduit of the pumps. Water must continuously flow through the pump which ensures that overheating is prevented during operation against a closed shut-off valve. If the water is fed back into the tank and if the flow rate is not more than 2% of the approved flow rate, the flow volume doesn't have to be considered in the hydraulic calculation.
Pumping conditions General informationThe submersible pump must always be covered by water, or the water must be able to freely flow to the pump. Even when using as a pressure shroud pump, the water must have the corresponding pri-mary pressure.
Installation conditions The submersible pump is to be placed in the tank according to the fig-ure. The conditions in accordance with Fig. 8.02 in the planning and installation documentation of the VdS [VdS CEA 4001: 2005-09 (02)] apply for supply lines to dry set-up pressure shroud pumps.

Motor type key:Example: NU 80-2/60NU Underwater motor80 Overall size2 No. of poles60 Package length (cm)
ApplicationPure water unit for pumping clear water at a maximum temperature up to 25°C, without long-fibred particles, from one water reservoir for use in sprinkler fire fighting plants. Pumped liquid temperatures up to 40°C on request.
ConstructionHydraulicsPump with single or multistage design with semi-axial hydraulics. The housing parts are manufactured from GJL with 2K-coating orG-CuSn10. The impellers are made of G-CuSn10. Between the hy-draulics and the motor there is a suction piece, which is equipped with a sieve for protecting against coarse contamination in the fluid. The pressure port is provided with a flange connection.
MotorThe motor shroud is manufactured from stainless steel, A2/A4-qua-lity. Rewindable three-phase AC motor for direct or star/delta start-up. The pump connection is a standardised connection or designed according to the NEMA standard. The shaft sealing on the motor side is a mechanical seal with SiC-SiC pairing. Special materials are avai-lable on request.
CoolingThe motor is cooled by the temperature and the flow rate of the pumped liquid on the motor shroud. In addition, all motors are filled with a water/glycol mixture from the manufacturer as a matter of standard. The motors can also be filled with potable water. A mini-mum flow rate of 0,1 m/s is required at the motor.
Pressure shroudThe unit can be installed in a pressure shroud for direct pipe installa-tion. The standard variant is without a non-return valve. The max. in-let pressure is 10 bar.
Optional• Cooling shroud• Bearing brackets for horizontal installation• Length of the power cable on customer request• Anti-vortex plate• Non-return valve

Bearing brackets and anti-vortex plate
Bearing bracketSpecial bearing brackets, either galvanized or made of stainless steel, are used for the horizontal installation of submersible motor pumps. The respective size depends on the pump and motor type. The exact dimensions of the required bearing brackets can be found in the type sheets of the individual pumps.
Anti-vortex plateThe anti-vortex plate can be used for the horizontal installation of the pump. It encloses the inlet area of the pump like a cooling shroud and prevents the formation of air turbulence during operation. By us-ing the anti-vortex plate, the pumped liquid is fed in a defined man-ner. This way, the required water coverage is minimised and the run-down tank container is utilised much better.
