This Week’s Meeting Public Image with
Bob Atkin and Fiona McCulloch
Introduction Bronwyn Berriman
Thanks Frank Ross
What an inspiration it was to hear Alex speak last week. I was very impressed by his determination to succeed and overcome disability in order to achieve his goals. I am sure you are all with me in wishing him a successful future. He is ‘lucky’ to have the love and support of family and enor-mous support and encouragement from his school in the pursuit of those goals.
I again ask that you please let Bill Bowler know your availability ASAP for the Nor-man Lindsay Literacy Festival on 15th & 16th September and then again for the Open Gardens weekend on 22nd & 23rd September – both of these weekends are major fund-raisers for our Club and it would be great to see them well supported.
We have our bus trip on the 8th & 9th Sep-tember to Orange and surrounds. Check that you have paid Norm so that he can re-lax and enjoy the lead in time until we go! We have the Melbourne Cup lunch in No-vember booked at Springwood Golf Club - $45.00pp. RSVP by email to Pat Ainslie!
We were all sorry to hear of Peter Kil-keary’s fall last weekend and wish him a speedy recovery following his surgery on Monday. Best wishes to all members who are not well at this time, we hope to see you all back on deck soon! Then, to our mem-bers off on holidays…Bon Voyage! Think of us as you enjoy your break! In Sherril's absence, news items to Marilyn Kenney for the Springword until beginning of October please!
This week we have Bob Aitkin and Fiona McCulloch coming along with a presenta-tion on Publicity and Public Image and what we can do to be more visible both in the Community and on Social Media – it

THE LAST MEETING At our last meeting, we had an inspirational presentation form Alex Partington following a devastating accident which changed his life. His challenges, and how he contin-ues to strive to achieve and re-build his life, proved to be a compelling insight into the difficulties he faces which through his families and his own positivity, he is achiev-ing. He was supported by his parents and the Winmalee HS Careers Adviser, Cherill Ruskin. He was introduced by Cheryl Kitto and thanked by Yvonne Meehan.
We also fare welled Matthew Jones as he takes up a permanent, full time Oc-cupational Therapist role at Chatter Box Speech Pathology working with chil-dren. We wish Matthew our very best wishes as he takes the next step in his career, and thank him for all of the hard work he has put in on Monday nights to make our Rotary meals such a success.

Fred Thompson will be representing our Club at the Remembrance Day Ceremony in Springwood on 11.11.18. Many thanks, Fred.
On 10.10.18, the Rotary Club of the Central Blue Mountains will be holding a special night for the “Lift the Lid” program for mental health run by Aus-tralian Rotary Health (ARH). The night is also com-memorating the approaching five year anniversary of the fires in the Blue Mountains (17.10.13). More information on this night will follow.
The Blue Mountains City Council has asked for vol-unteers to “Adopt a Dog Waste Bag Dispenser” in Buttenshaw Park. All that is required is for someone to fill up the bag supply for the dog walkers, and empty the bin of the doggy do do’s waste bags. Any volunteers please see Margaret ASAP.
We need volunteers for the Norman Lindsay Litera-cy Festival on the weekend of 15-16 September. Any help you can give on this spectacularly busy weekend would be greatly appreciated. A number of our members are on leave, some are at Buckland Fete, and some are just not available for a variety of reasons. If you can contribute a few hours to helping with parking and/or the BBQ over the weekend, let Bill Bowler know ASAP.
This year, President Margaret is encouraging all members to be on one of our teams. To be able to have plenty of choice about which team you would like to be on, see the Director of that portfolio and let them know sooner, rather than later, because the team may be full. Explore options for Club service available to you.
Two reminders from Norm: a. Centurion Towers are available from Norm for
your Centurion donation fro 2018-19. b. Payment for the Bus trip by Tuesday, 4th Sep-
tember, so that it is clear and in the Rotary ac-count by Friday, 7th September. The trip leaves Faulconbridge PS by 7.30am. Parking is in the school grounds.
Pride of Workmanship Awards Nominations are due to Dee Covington as soon as possible. The POW awards are being presented on Monday, 8th October.

Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards Overall Winners
Young Inspirational Woman 2018 When the ordinary driver passes a Vinnies van pulled up on some dark night, it might not get more than a moment’s thought. But there are dedicated people behind that ongoing concern for the destitute. One of the leaders in this is Angela Stansfield, who works full-time at Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation raising vital funds for children with Cancer, but then also goes out as a volunteer to help. She has worked seven years with the St Vin-cent de Paul Society, leading and inspiring volunteers, organising fundraising events and encouraging communities to take part and help raise awareness for many issues which in-clude homelessness, sick kids and disadvantaged families. For the last five years, Angela has organised a “Homeless Winter Appeal” that collects non-perishable food and blankets that are distributed by organisations such as Mission Beat and Oz Harvest. She has now also joined Parramatta Lions and will continue to lead and support ongoing projects.
Inspirational Woman 2018
Dr Vera Sistenich, like the great ophthalmologist Fred Hollows, has seen the greatest need for her medical specialty – in this case emergency medicine – among marginalised people, such as Australia’s Aborigines and detained asylum seekers. Like Fred, she has reached out to the disadvantaged in the Third World, focusing in her case on the Congo, where she has been team leader of the Emergency Medicine Education Project, a RAWCS initiative spon-sored by the Rotary E-Club of Greater Sydney. In 2015, Vera’s initiative was a far-reaching training program in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a nation of more than 80 million people with no paramedics and few ambulances. She has now trained more than 400 doc-tors and nurses in seven provinces and has moved on to help develop an academic program there in emergency medicine. Even through her hobby as an apiarist, she has devoted the proceeds to her Congo project.
